ALUMNI HIGHLIGHT THEIR RESEARCH INITIATIVES AT RESEARCH IN ACTION SEMINAR IN OBSERVANCE OF THE 180TH ANNIVERSARY!!!
On October 25th, 2024, the Queen's College Old Students' Association (QCOSA) hosted a "Research in Action" seminar at the Arthur Chung Convention Center. This event celebrated the 180th anniversary of Queen's College by highlighting the diverse research interests of its alumni. By connecting academic scholarship with real-world applications, the seminar showcased the institution's lasting impact on its graduates and the broader community.
Dr. Dhivindra Kissoon, the Master of Ceremonies for the event, opened the proceedings with a compelling speech. He emphasized the importance of fostering knowledge transmission from seasoned professionals to the public. The theme of the seminar, "How academic knowledge and qualifications that we acquire can be applied practically in the business world," resonated profoundly with the audience. Dr. Kissoon encouraged attendees to engage actively with the panelists, enhancing the seminar’s interactive component. His articulate introductions of the speakers created a respectful and motivating atmosphere for the day's discussions.
A key highlight of the seminar was the presentation by Mr. Tony Harris, President and CEO of e-Magic Inc., who introduced the audience to TwinWorX, a software solution designed to promote sustainability in building designs. Dr. Harris's firm, headquartered in Toronto, integrates environmental considerations into its software and solutions, reflecting a commitment to responsible development. He shared insights about successful implementations of TwinWorX in projects across India, Canada, and the United States, with exciting plans for deployment in his home country of Guyana. His presentation underscored the critical intersection of technology and sustainability in contemporary architectural practices.
Following a brief intermission for refreshments, the seminar resumed with presentations from a distinguished panel of experts, each addressing their respective research interests.
Panelist 1: Dr. A Luncheon - Emotional Intelligence and Employee Engagement
The first panelist, Dr. A Luncheon, an Assistant Professor in Business Management at Eastern New Mexico University, presented her research on emotional intelligence (EI) and its significance in the workplace. She distinguished between emotional intelligence and traditional intelligence (IQ), emphasizing that EI is a vital soft skill that fosters a positive organizational culture. Dr. Luncheon articulated, “It builds a positive culture especially in the workplace, and it is always good to build trust.” Her insights highlighted the importance of emotional intelligence in enhancing employee engagement and overall productivity.
Panelist 2: Dr. Nikita La Cruz - Ore Deposits
Secondly, Dr. Nikita La Cruz, a Project Geologist and Geochemist at Barrick Gold Corporation, shared her passion for environmental sustainability in mining. Drawing from her background in chemistry and physics, she articulated her research focus on the environmental impacts of mining operations, specifically concerning ore deposits. With a Ph.D. in Geochemistry, La Cruz aims to detect prospective mining areas while ensuring that such activities are conducted in an environmentally responsible manner. Her commitment to contributing positively to her home country of Guyana through sustainable practices was particularly inspiring.
Panelist 3: Dr. Aaron Fraser - Strategic Responses in Firms
Furthermore, Dr. Aaron Fraser, an Assistant Professor at Mount Saint Vincent University, discussed his research on Guyanese firms' strategic responses to various challenges, including subsidiary management and the implications of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors on firm value. His exploration of these topics underscored the dynamic nature of strategic management in a globalized economy and the importance of ESG considerations in enhancing corporate sustainability and ethical practices.
Panelist 4: Dr. Felicia De Santos - Food Safety and Innovation
The next panelist, Dr. Felicia De Santos, an Associate Research and Development professional at General Mills Inc., focused on the food industry and the necessity for innovation driven by market demands. With a Ph.D. in food science, particularly in fish and meat products, she remarked, “Necessity is the mother of invention.” Dr. De Santos emphasized the translatable nature of research across disciplines and highlighted her passion for communication, which she believes is critical for fostering emotional intelligence in the workplace.
Panelist 5: Dr. Christopher Chunnilall - Quantum Photonics and Cybersecurity
Following, Dr. Christopher Chunnilall, a Principal Scientist at the National Physical Laboratory in the UK, presented his research on single photon sources within the field of quantum photonics. He also addressed the relevance of cybersecurity in protecting advancements in this rapidly evolving area. His candid advice to aspiring professionals which was, "Everyone has luck when it comes to their careers; they just need to prepare to take that luck when it comes along,” resonated with many attendees, encouraging them to seize opportunities as they arise.
Panelist 6: Dr. Cleveland Waddell - Data Science and Cybersecurity
Lastly, Dr. Cleveland Waddell, a Data Scientist at Sandia National Laboratories, focuses on data science, engineering, and cybersecurity. His research addresses the challenge of reducing false positives in cybersecurity systems, which can hinder effective responses. By automating data analysis processes, he aims to enhance threat detection and overall cybersecurity efficacy. Dr. Waddell emphasizes using data science to track anomalies that signal hacking attempts. Additionally, he is dedicated to expanding data science education in Guyana through initiatives like the Queen's College MATH Camp, aspiring to inspire the next generation of data scientists and to advance the field globally.
The seminar concluded with a Q&A segment, providing attendees the opportunity to engage directly with the panelists. This interactive portion fostered a vibrant exchange of ideas, reinforcing the seminar's theme of practical application of academic knowledge in various professional contexts. The seminar exemplified how Queen's College continues to inspire and empower its alumni as well as the upcoming generation to contribute meaningfully to society through their research and professional endeavors, aligning with the motto of being “faithful and useful everywhere.”
