In a video-recorded presentation, Prime Minister Philip Davis expressed his rejection of those opposing new players in the global oil and gas market while extending his full support to Guyana, a burgeoning oil-producing nation navigating the delicate balance between oil exploitation and the transition to renewable energy, along with a commitment to reduce carbon emissions.
βWe stand behind Guyana as it steers its industrialization journey on its own terms, utilizing the resources bestowed upon the people of Guyana,β emphasized Prime Minister Davis.
These remarks were made in the context of supporting fellow Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries, a longstanding integration movement in the developed world, emphasizing the necessity for collaboration among small states given their unique vulnerabilities.
Highlighting the region's resilience in turning adversity into strength, Davis underscored his endorsement of Guyana's recent transformation and modernization efforts. However, he acknowledged the complexities arising from the discovery and exploitation of oil and gas reserves offshore Guyana, particularly in supply chain and logistics β a subject of ongoing debate during the conference.
While acknowledging the potential for prosperity, Davis identified challenges and disapproved of those hindering the entrance of small developing states in the Caribbean region into the oil and gas market. This obstruction, he argued, adds an unnecessary burden as the global community confronts the task of addressing global warming and mitigating climate change.
Commending Guyana's long-term energy production plan, which incorporates environmental preservation efforts, Davis noted the nation's extensive forests, covering nearly 91% of its landmass, and its remarkably low deforestation rate, positioning Guyana as a significant carbon sink. Through its Low Carbon Development Strategy, the country aims to strike a balance and transition to renewable energy sources.
Davis emphasized the collective responsibility of all regional leaders and citizens to exhibit a similar level of environmental stewardship in the face of global challenges.
