A new frontier play concept is being tested in ’s deepwater as and explore the potential of Aptian-age carbonates on the Demerara Plateau.

The Macaw-1 well in Block 58, operated by TotalEnergies, and Shell’s Araku Deep-1 well are drilling into an unproven carbonate play that could redefine in the region. Aptian carbonates are ancient rock layers formed about 120 million years ago in warm, shallow seas.

ExxonMobil’s Payara project continues to hold the record for the fastest production ramp-up among all oil developments in Guyana’s offshore Stabroek Block.

Production from the Prosperity floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel began in November 2022 and hit 220,000 barrels per day (b/d) just two months later, three months ahead of schedule. That achievement remains unmatched in the country’s offshore history.

In May 2025, then-President Chandrikapersad Santokhi unveiled ‘Royalties for Everyone’, an initiative that promised to share Suriname’s future oil revenues directly with its citizens. Under the plan, every Surinamese citizen would receive a share of royalties from oil production in Block 58 once revenues begin flowing in 2028.

That ambition, however, has now been set aside, for a more “sustainable” investment.
