by GHK Lall I have always said and believed that it is how leaders react under the pressure of the moment that defines them. How leaders who hold themselves as the best thing since Solomon respond when backed into a corner, or are drawn out into a calculated exchange, or are compelled to deal with the facts at hand is what reveals the real essence of them, what they are about deep inside. ...

By Dr. Randy Persaud, Professor Emeritus I read with interest Stabroek News’ recent editorial under the title “The need for deeper dialogue on the economy” (9/9/2024). The core idea of the editorial is that multilateral financial institutions ought to meet with civil society organizations and the Opposition during the loan consultation process. This is an inherently good idea. Yet, by all the evidence available, this kind of magnanimity only surfaces when the PPP is in office....

President Irfaan Ali on Tuesday ann0unced plans for improving the rundown state of Georgetown, once regarded as the Garden City of the Caribbean, with assistance from the United Kingdom's King Charles Foundation. The Guyanese leader said the local government- Mayor and City Council- would be involved in that urban renewal project, but central government would be responsible for implementation. "The cross cutting nature of this work means that it requires action from local government as well as the central government but it's cross cutting nature means that it is appropriate that central government funds the work and leads its implementation," he said....

Former Finance Minister, Winston Jordan on Friday recommended that government cut various types of "waste" and eventually introduce employee appraisal in order to pay teachers and other government workers increased salaries. Mr Jordan said if waste- due to shoddy public infrastructure projects, corruption, political projects for votes, improper maintenance, waste of public monies and absence of feasibility studies- was reduced by at least 10 percent, there would be sufficient "fiscal space" to pay teachers a 20 percent increase in 2024, 15 percent in 2025 and 10 percent in 2026....

By Dr. Randy Persaud. Professor Emeritus It is astounding that the same people who call for magnanimity are the very ones who make a living by pushing poison pills into the public sphere on a daily basis. By GHK Lall I keep it simple in this chat about democracy versus autocracy in Guyana. I agree and disagree with the erudite Dr. Bertrand Ramcharran. I mostly disagree with those who disagree with him. First, some poor man’s definitions would help. Democracy is government by those with the greater numbers, a system where high ideals once resonated. Autocracy is where those in charge (usually one) deliberately subvert the ideals of democracy for scurrilous personal objectives....
