Sometimes in this line of work you meet colleagues on the 1st day of filming and spend days-on-end with them even though you never met them before. With Anja we met and worked remotely before we physically met in . With Chris (the 🎥 DOP) and Christian (the 🎤 sound operator) we only met on location and worked hard across several locations with a demanding schedule. We managed to do more than anticipated and I just want to extend my gratitude to Marianna, Vassilis, Carolina, and the rest of the contributors who facilitated the production of this episode featuring beautiful people and their craft.

We were standing on the beach in complete darkness. Lined up together with few other helpers as we were informed by the Spanish lifeguards PROACTIVA that there is a stream of boats arriving. Lights from the Turkish coast was the only thing we could see. A few minutes later and while our eyes were pinned in the pitch black waters we heard some distant low-tone singing. A sweet-sounding melody with no visual reference was coming closer and closer. Within minutes a cheering and clapping dinghy landed on the beach. We, at land, transferred all babies & children first and held them until their parents came ashore. When reunited with his daughter - after those few minutes of separation - this Syrian man burst into joyful tears over his 2 month-old baby. Haunted by children's cries so far in this harrowing refugee crisis this was a rewarding moment.

With this cross-border investigation we managed to reveal a staggering number of 1015 unidentified bodies buried in graves across Europe. More than half of these are in this country, Greece, one of the main entry points forming Europe’s migration landscape in the last decade.

It now marks 9 years since I witnessed one of the deadliest shipwrecks on Greek territory. I was there when the Hellenic coastguard, rescue teams and Greek fishermen were struggling to save people from drowning, from hypothermia, from dying. I was handed a months-old unconscious baby upside down to pass on to the hands of the medical team working feverishly on the floor of a small harbor on Le**os island. Several weeks later, I was at the cemetery where the victims of that shipwreck were buried. I saw two gravestones, side by side, that each read “unidentified infant” and a series of numbers underneath. The cemetery was created in 2015 in lack of space to bury the victims of shipwrecks.

This is our core border graves investigation team, as we call it. Barbara Matejcic, Leah Pattem, Gabriela Ramirez, Danai Maragkoudaki, Gabriele Cruciata, Eoghan Gilmartin and Tina Xu.

Thank you to all the people who spoke to us. We are happy our work has made an impact.
