FALSE! Seizure of ex-president Jammeh’s Assets Violates ‘Coalition 2016’s Pact’ with Ecowas, UN and AU

On March 5, the discussion around the 14-point declaration resurfaced on the floor of the National Assembly. The lawmaker representing Foni Jarrol— Kebba Tumanding Sanneh— asked if the declaration is being “protected”, perhaps meant to say “observed”, the language minister Dawda Jallow said he did not understand.

However, in the various interventions made by a number of lawmakers trying to ask a much better framed question, Hon Almameh Gibba— the lawmaker for Foni Kansala— claims the 8th point of the declaration protects Jammeh from seizure of his assets, his family and supporters.

The claims made by Hon Almameh Gibba and insinuated by Hon Kebba Tumanding Sanneh that seizure of Jammeh assets violate point eighth of declaration issued on January 21 is FALSE .

FALSE & MISLEADING! ‘Jammeh Kept Price of Rice at D950; Senegal Soldiers Caused Ambush’

Verdict: Not only was it false to suggest that the price of a bag of rice was between D800 to D950, it was misleading to suggest that Jammeh controlled its price under his 22–year rule.

The comment on the cause of the ambush of Senegalese soldiers by rebels is misleading as it left out several vital pieces of information necessary to understand the reason for the deployment and the reason for the pursuit of the truck which led soldiers into an ambush.

EXPLAINER: Should Gambian Migrants Pay Recruitment Fee to Work in Spain?

The Gambia Government signed a memorandum of understanding on circular migration with the Kingdom of Spain on 28th August 2024. Barely a week after Parliamentarians ratified the MoU, a leaked letter from the Spanish Government instructed the Gambia to notify citizens not to pay for their application to work in Spain.

The agreement which is set to start in early 2025 will see Gambians travel to work in the Spanish labour market on seasonal basis. Based on the MoU signed by Spain’s Minister of Inclusion and The Gambia’s Minister of Defense, the agreement “shall apply for an initial period of one (1) year from the date it was signed. It may be extended for a period considered appropriate by the signatories.“
