FACTSHEET: What’s in The Gambia-Saudi Agreement for Domestic Workers

The Gambia’s National Assembly ratified an agreement with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on 24th September 2024 on Domestic Workers Recruitment signed by the Minister of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment (MoTIE), Hon Baboucarr Ousmaila Joof.

According to the document, the purpose of the Domestic Workers Recruitment Agreement “is to recruit domestic workers from the Republic of The Gambia to legally work in Saudi Arabia and to protect the rights of both employers and domestic workers and regulate the contractual relation between them”.

EXPLAINER: Should Gambian Migrants Pay Recruitment Fee to Work in Spain?

The Gambia Government signed a memorandum of understanding on circular migration with the Kingdom of Spain on 28th August 2024. Barely a week after Parliamentarians ratified the MoU, a leaked letter from the Spanish Government instructed the Gambia to notify citizens not to pay for their application to work in Spain.

The agreement which is set to start in early 2025 will see Gambians travel to work in the Spanish labour market on seasonal basis. Based on the MoU signed by Spain’s Minister of Inclusion and The Gambia’s Minister of Defense, the agreement “shall apply for an initial period of one (1) year from the date it was signed. It may be extended for a period considered appropriate by the signatories.“

The Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs (MoFEA), Hon. Seedy S. Keita tabled the 2025 Budget in Parliament on Thursday 15th November, 2025 requesting approval for a 30% salary increase.

During the tabling of the budget, the Finance Minister highlighted that since President Adama Barrow took over, salaries have increased by 110%.
