The Government has quietly divided and doled out a large tract of land - equivalent in size to more than 30 standard international football fields - believed to be carved out of the Tanji Bird Reserve by President Jammeh. The new owners - well, those named so far - include lawyer and politician Essa Faal; a Senegalese businessman and financier of President Barrow, Khalilou Wague; and a Gambia-based Indian businessman, Nandkishore Rajwani, who reportedly uses different names to amass land from the state. OBITUARY: Fatou O. Barrow

It's with a heavy heart that we announce the death of Fatou O. Barrow, who was on internship at the Gambia Press Union.

Fatou joined the GPU under the National Youth Service Scheme Internship Programme on 23rd October, 2023.

She graduated last month from the School of Journalism & Digital Media, University of The Gambia with a BSc in Journalism.

The GPU is deeply saddened by her demise.

Fatou was very hardworking, pays attention to detail, a good writer, and very respectful.

The burial will be held tomorrow, according to the family, but a specific time has yet to be decided.

May Allah grant her Jannatul Firdaus. We also pray for Allah to grant the family the fortitude to bear this loss.

Fatou is the daughter of the late Journalist Omar Barrow who used to work for Sud FM in Banjul and also a Red Cross Volunteer. Omar was killed by Gambian security forces in April 2000 during a crackdown on a nationwide student demonstration that saw at least 14 killings.

Fatou was a few months old when his dad was killed. She had hoped for justice.

"They targeted him," she said, her face turning grim, in an interview with Malagen in 2023. "They could have handled it better, without killing people. They should face justice."
