NATIONAL SECURITY COUNCIL ON A FACT FINDING MISSION IN FONI
The National Security Council (NSC) on Monday 1 January 2024 was in the Fonis on a fact finding mission. It could be recalled that the Senegalese Armed Forces clashed with elements of the Movement of Democratic Forces of Cassamance (MFDC) sometime in 2021 and 2023 along our Southern border with the Republic of Senegal. The spillover effect of the conflict had affected Gambians living in the border villages of Jiffanga, Kusamai, Siwol, Tamba K***a, Jillanfari, Karunorr, Balenh, Gikesh, Kantimba and Kappa.

The intermittent fighting, according to reports, caused disruption of economic activities such as farming due to heavy bombardment and exchange of fire, including mortar shells and other projectiles. It was also reported that, these shells, which sometimes land on the Gambian side of the border do not explode on impact. The fighting had eventually led to an influx and displacement of refugees and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) as well as closure of schools. It had left a lot of Gambians in the area traumatized and in fear causing villagers to evacuate the most vulnerable ones, such as the elderly, women and children to safer zones.

It is against this backdrop that the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, His Excellency Adama Barrow dispatched members of the NSC to visit the affected communities in Foni. The aim of the visit was to commiserate with them as well as gather firsthand information on the situation in these Villages. The delegation comprised of the Honourable Ministers of Defence and the Interior, the National Security Adviser, the Chief of Defence Staff of the Gambia Armed Forces, the Inspector General of Police, the Deputy Director General of State Intelligence Services, NAMs and Chiefs of Foni, the Director General of the National Disaster Management Agency and other stakeholders. Details of the engagements by the delegation will be provided in subsequent releases.

However, said our source, the incident has led to the relocation to another cell of several high-profile inmates. These include former APRC junta member Yankuba Touray, his namesake Yankuba Badjie, former head of the NIA and PS Dr Bamba Banja.

The Standard contacted the PRO of prisons, Inspector Luke Jatta, who confirmed the incident but said he cannot give more details as the matter is being investigated

Good morning, Gambia!

President Adama Barrow wants to disintegrate the UDP executive as he prepares himself and his party for 2026, according to a reliable source.

UDP's spokesperson Almami Fanding Taal is likely to crosscarpet. Some NPP bigwigs are currently busy negotiating his "transfer".

While all these are happening:

~ Hundreds of young Gambians have died or gone missing while attempting to enter Europe via the “back way”.

~ Rampant corruption is creating huge losses for the country.

~ Thousands of school children are sitting on the floor to learn.

~ Dozens of villages in the provinces still lack access to clean drinking water.

~ House rents are rising at the fastest rate in Gambian history.

~ Food prices are rising rapidly.

~ Farmers are struggling to make ends meet.

~ College and university students are struggling to pay their tuition fees.

~ Electricity has become unaffordable.

Let's not allow the selfish and self-centered NPP and UDP politicians to divert our attention from real issues affecting the country.

Jumma Mubarak!

On December 14, the judge of the Dakar district court ruled in favor of Ousmane Sonko and overturned his removal from the electoral lists.

This decision has important implications for Sonko's candidacy in the upcoming February 2024 presidential election. Previously, a judgment in October had reinstated Sonko's candidacy by annulling his removal from the electoral lists following a two-year prison sentence in a morals case. However, this decision was overturned by the Supreme Court on November 17.

Sonko's recent legal victory allows him to continue his political campaign and participate in the upcoming election. Source:

Senegalese opposition figure Ousmane Sonko faces a crucial court decision on December 12 regarding his candidacy for the 2024 presidential elections.

The Supreme Court overturned a previous ruling that had allowed him to run after being removed from the electoral roll due to a conviction in a vice scandal.

Sonko claims these legal challenges are orchestrated to prevent his presidential bid, while authorities deny manipulating the justice system.

If the court upholds his disbarment, Sonko will be ineligible for the 2024 elections, intensifying a longstanding legal battle with the state.

Black history

When archeologists came to Africa and found elongated skulls, they run with it that it was the skulls of the “ALIENS” who built those sophisticated and advanced civilizations that were scattered all over Africa.

The elongated skull has been a part and parcel of the traditions of some African tribes, especially the Mangbetu tribe of the Congo.

Below is a mother and daughter from the Mangbetu tribe, in 1930 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Limpombo (head elongation) was believed to allow the brain to grow bigger thus increasing intelligence and it was also a sign of beauty.

The Mangbetu are celebrated for their exquisite art and music, with the renowned Mangbetu harp/guitar symbolizing their cultural heritage. These prized instruments have fetched over $100,000, while musicologists strive to document their captivating melodies.

The Mangbetu captivated European colonists with their distinctively elongated heads, achieved through the traditional practice known as Lipombo. By tightly wrapping infants' heads with cloth, they created a remarkable appearance that became synonymous with their culture.

However, with the influx of Europeans and the spread of Westernization, this practice gradually declined from the 1950s onwards. Nonetheless, the unmistakable Mangbetu figures in African art continue to serve as enduring testaments to their unique aesthetic heritage.
