LET US AVOID ANYTHING THAT MAY OR CAN UNDERMINE OUR DEMOCRACY!!!!
FOR THE GAMBIA 🇬🇲 OUR HOMELAND!!!
In today's world, where social media evolves at an increasingly rapid pace, attention must be drawn to the recent move by The Gambia government to fund certain media outlets to promote their agenda, raises a serious concern about the integrity of journalism.
In a democratic space, where the freedom of the press is important in holding the government to account will be jeopardized by this move and question the integrity of the selected media houses in delivering to their responsibilities freely. This government fund will suppress media freedom and compel the selected media houses to work towards promoting and defending them.
With the acceptance of these funds the selected media houses will entirely fail to be a watchdog to the state. The media is expected to hold the government to its feet and report independently on government dealings for the interest of the country. The acceptance of these funds might also limit view points on government matters with these media outlets. I am with the view that in cementing our democracy and holding public officials to account this will be a set back and undermines divergent views most especially from those that are very firm to holding the government to account.
The rise of social media has been associated with the emergence of greater freedom of speech without censorship or barrier of any type. The media should be a platform to present information without being controlled or limited as it will open up access to different discussions.
The country is at a rough road where people need to speak up genuinely about our problems that have been concealed by officials and authorities at a higher level in their various administrations.
Inflection to The Gambia Radio and Television Services as a state owned institution should have been more empowered as they face a lot of challenges in their operation. Why did the government decide to empower private media outlets over our own state TV?.
The ministry of information has the state TV where they can promote government agendas and if your government completely loses faith in them let it shut down.
The government officials will come all out to mislead us that the agenda of the government is everyone's agenda, which is not the fact, but I am telling you these agendas is a rebranding to promote and sell the agenda of the NPP for 2026 as the popularity of the President is diminishing by the day. The media is very instrumental and being allowed to be used as a propaganda tool to propel the NPP agenda will kill their integrity.
We are concerned that this contract accorded to the selected media houses will compromise editorial Independence and media plurality will be greatly affected.
It is shocking and worrying based on the report read, it's not an inclusive contract, a few media houses were identified and contracted at their discretion.
To the PS of the Ministry of Information, he is misleading the public that there was restricted bidding process which is not true. There are media houses in the country that have no clue about the bidding process and the selection of these media houses. It was a matter of pick and choose issue and you have exactly those you needed to carry out the job for you.
The government has claimed that they have worked tirelessly to bring development to the door steps of the Gambians, and if that is true why do they need the media to inform the people when the projects is for the people?
With all these concerns, it is very important for the media to maintain their independence and safeguard the integrity of journalism to attain their freedom and impartiality in their jobs.
My question is, should the choosen media house accept this offer considering the pictures below??!👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇
