"The water levels came up gradually and we also moved every time the water reached our homes. The water level kept rising till we were permanently displaced." says Griffin Nakure.

A number of people were displaced in the process forcing them to retreat to camps where they lived with the difficulty of accessing basic needs and clean water.

Access to some of the IDP camps located in higher grounds is through use of boats. The people are therefore threatened by a couple of dangers including being attacked by crocodiles

The iconic Soi Safari Lodge was one of the buildings that was submerged while Baringo Mixed Secondary School on the other hand was relocated after the entire school compound was submerged.

Life in the camps for the internally displaced people has been a tasking one with some remaining with nothing to depend on.

This occurrence surprised the community because as much as they can remember in their entire life time, the lake had never overflown to that extent. - Africa News

However, the menace has now become a thing of the past as operatives of the SIS are 24 hours patrolling the area in ensuring that peace and stability is maintained in the area with a view to boost economic activities of local dwellers in the area who depend mainly on businesses," Mamud Drammeh, the alkalo of Kerr Pateh said.

Alkalo Drammeh was speaking yesterday during the opening of the new SIS complex building in Kerr Pateh. “I want to thank the director general of SIS for his foresight and magnanimity in providing security for the people of Kerr Pateh and the whole of Central Badibou as the deployment of the officers have greatly impacted on the lives and livelihoods of the inhabitants.”

DG Sowe, accompanied by a high powered delegation is expected to interact with Gambians and also discuss with different stakeholders the significance of maintaining peace in the country. He advised the gathering to remain watchful and continue to collaborate with all the security officers as national security is everyone’s business. - The Point

Nearly 94,000 suspected cases of cholera have been recorded in Nigeria between January and October 2021.

Data compiled by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) shows that suspected infections have been recorded in 32 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) since the beginning of the year.

At least 3,293 deaths have been recorded, representing a 3.5% case fatality ratio.

This year's outbreak is the worst in over a decade, according to the Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières), an international humanitarian medical non-governmental organisation (NGO).

The organisation said in a publication last week it's working with Nigeria's Ministry of Health to try to control the epidemic.

Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection, and is typically contracted from food or water contaminated with the bacterium vibrio cholerae.

Bauchi has recorded the highest number of cases (19,452) this year, followed by Kano (12,116), Zamfara (11,100), and Jigawa (10,673).

Jigawa has recorded the highest number of deaths (470), followed by Sokoto (410), Kano (368), and Bauchi (323).

Other states that have recorded suspected cholera cases include Katsina, Kebbi, Yobe, Niger, Kaduna, Borno, Plateau, Gombe, Nasarawa, Adamawa, Benue, Delta, Bayelsa, Oyo, Kwara, Ebonyi, Kogi, Enugu, Taraba, Lagos, Abia, Cross River, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti.

Rivers is the only state with suspected cases (46) without any reported deaths.

Nigeria's response to the outbreak is led by the NCDC in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA), and other partners.

The response includes the promotion of hygiene, provision of safe water, water chlorination, household disinfection, and sensitisation on dangers of open defecation in high-risk communities. - Pulse NG

A tanker truck explosion at night in Sierra Leone’s capital, Freetown caused massive loss of life, with dozens reportedly dead. Many of the victims were allegedly trying to collect fuel after an accident on the road.
Images shared online and purportedly taken after the blast show a massive fire in the street, with a column of smoke billowing into the air. Officials did not immediately provide details about the incident, but the head of the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) said it was a “terrible, terrible accident.”

In the hours after the incident, the death toll cited by officials has been steadily increasing. Vice President Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh said at least 92 people were killed after visiting two hospitals which received victims.

The same figure was reported by the city’s central morgue, which said that is how many bodies were brought in from the scene. A later update revised it to 95. A deputy health minister later put the death toll at 99.

A Connaught Hospital staff member told the Associated Press that there were 30 seriously burned victims who were not expected to survive.

The explosion went off at Bai Bureh Road, a major traffic route in the eastern part of Freetown, and happened after the fuel truck collided with another vehicle, Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr said. She called images from the scene “harrowing” and cited unconfirmed reports that the death toll may be over 100.

“Residents who tried to collect the fuel leaking from the truck were victims of the subsequent explosion,” the mayor added in a statement on Facebook.

The claim that people were collecting fuel is supported by footage of excited people standing around the tanker, some carrying canisters, which was allegedly taken shortly before the explosion. - RT

The permanent secretary at the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MoBSE) has said that the country is running out of science teachers.

Louis Moses Mendy was speaking recently at a press conference on the announcement of the Q-Group Foundation and MoBSE scholarship funding programme for the basic education cycle (upper basic and senior secondary schools) aimed to encourage young Gambians to venture into mathematics, science, and ICT-related programmes at the University of The Gambia.

“As a country, we are running out of science teachers in physics, chemistry, the sciences, data analysis, and others. This is a group that is technology-based and led,” he said adding that the country does not want to continue importing labour.

“The reason for this scholarship is that we will begin to train young people in this country so that they can take over the leadership in years to come. We are very pleased as a ministry that the Q-group Foundation is offering these 10 scholarships as a start to look at these critical areas such that by the time the four years of the study programme would have rolled out, we would have at least 40 students on scholarship and continuously if are able to produce 10 science-related professionals in this country, I am sure within a short range of 10 years, we would be able to supply the market with demand that is needed.” - The Standard

Authorities say at least 15 people have died and dozens more are missing.

Rescue workers at the site say they have heard more voices from under the rubble. Nine people have been pulled out alive so far.

The partially built block of luxury apartments came down on Monday but what caused the collapse remains unclear.

Overnight, despite the heavy rain, people used floodlights to continue the search digging through debris and twisted metal.

Ibrahim Farinloye of Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency told the Agence France-Presse news agency that rescue workers have been communicating with several survivors still trapped in the rubble.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari urged workers at the scene "to step up" rescue efforts in a statement on Monday night.

Many relatives are now anxiously waiting near the site to hear whether their loved ones have survived.

"Our sister is inside," Fawas Sanni told AFP.

His sister, Zainab, was working at the construction site as part of the National Youth Service Corps.

"I was the last one who to spoke to her before she went to work yesterday morning," Mr Sanni is quoted as saying. - BBC News

S*x on false promise of US Green Card

- Sometime last week, one of our followers sent us a message informing us that he stumbled upon a video on PornHub showing a young Gambian woman having s*x with an African-American man.

- When we visited PornHub, we discovered the African-American is an amateur p**n star who visits African countries just to have unprotected s*x with vulnerable women.

- He met the naive 24-year-old Gambian less than one year ago on Facebook. The African-American traveled all the way from his home in New York to have s*x with her.

- He met the girl's parents and promised to marry their daughter and take her to the USA. The girl was allowed to stay with him at his hotel in the Senegambia Strip.

- His activities with the girl in his hotel room included unprotected s*x and taking indecent videos and photographs for PornHub.

- We managed to locate the girl. She's a young civil servant who lives with her mum and stepdad. When we informed her that her s*x videos were on PornHub, she replied: "I am dead!" The man later deleted all the videos.

- We advised her to visit the nearest health center and get tested for HIV and s*xually transmitted infections.

- She disclosed that the African-American is talking with another Gambian girl and may return to The Gambia soon. She said: "He is trying another girl again. I will send you the girl's number."

- When the African-American discovered that the girl was talking to us, he asked her to delete her Facebook account and cut off contact with us.

ADVICE TO YOUNG GAMBIANS: Please, stop "chasing" strangers online. It's dangerous, especially for women.

Three Kenyan police officers were charged on Friday with helping a "bloodthirsty vampire" child murderer escape from their custody last week, before a mob lynched him over the killings.

Masten Milimo Wanjala -- a self-confessed serial killer -- was arrested on July 14 over the disappearance of two children, but, in a chilling confession, admitted to the brutal murder of at least 10 others.

He was accused of killing his victims over a five-year period "in the most callous manner, sometimes through sucking blood from their veins before executing them", the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said at the time.

The 20-year-old was due in court on October 13 in Nairobi over the murders which targeted 12- and 13-year-old children, when officers noticed during the morning roll call that he had disappeared.

But a mob caught up with him two days later after he was identified by schoolchildren at his rural home in Bungoma, more than 400 kilometres (250 miles) from the police station he had fled. - Africa News
