Whatever the outcome of this historic moment for our country, what matters the most is that we seize the opportunity to exercise our civic right and duty of determining our political future. We must respond to the call of democracy peacefully and united, beyond any factionalism, tribalism and division. We must take pride in the differences that enrich our nation and follow our beliefs with conviction while never preventing our fellow nationals from believing otherwise. This is the message spread by the youths interviewed in this video, who share their hopes and recommendations on the run up to the momentous 2021 Gambian presidential election.

CA Congratulates President-Elect Barrow and Calls for Peace and Unity

Following the Independent Electoral Commission's (IEC) official declaration of the final results of the December 4 presidential election, the Citizens' Alliance (CA) wishes to congratulate His Excellency, President Adama Barrow on his successful re-election.

We wish to equally congratulate all Gambians, particularly the women, differently abled, the old and young people, for coming out in their large numbers to cast their votes for the candidate of their choice. The voter turnout has been unprecedentedly high.

Mr. President-Elect, Gambians have communicated their trust in you through their votes in anticipation of your fulfilment of campaign promises. We challenge you to roll your sleeves and adequately respond to the many wishes of Gambians and the numerous responsibilities of being a President. As you prepare to steer the affairs of the country for the next five years, CA wishes to assure you (the Head of State) and the Gambian people its commitment towards the new chapter of our beloved country and the consolidation of our nascent democracy.

We join you, the general public and the International Community to call on all Gambians to accept the results, following confirmations of a free, fair and transparent election by the election observers, both domestic and international.

Finally, we seize this opportunity to extend our sincere wishes, gratitude and commendations to the other presidential candidates for fairly participating in this very important electoral process and for conducting a peaceful campaign.

The CSO Coalition on Election Situation Room declared the election was free, fair and transparent.

The chairman of the group disclosed: β€œWe had over 700 observers, we did not receive any report of malpractices.”

Members of the CSO Coalition include the Gambia Press Union, Gambia Bar Association and Tango.

Bai Mustapha Sallah is the co-founder of Youth Against Irregular Migration which aims to save lives by raising awareness of the dangers of the β€œbackway” route of irregular migration from his home country of the Gambia in West Africa. His goal is to raise awareness of the dangers of irregular migration, challenge the reasons that cause the loss of a large proportion of the Gambia’s youthful population, and to advocate for greater youth employment opportunities and increased participation in decision-making platforms.
His passion for activism and the subsequent formation of YAIM is borne from his personal experience of imprisonment while attempting to make the trans-Saharan and trans-Mediterranean journey that many of his fellow Gambians embark on. Mustapha’s social activism and advocacy skills continue to grow through his grassroots engagement with communities through school outreach, roadshows, open dialogues, story-telling and social media, and the formation of partnerships with the National Youth Council in Gambia, and the UN’s International Organisation of Migration.
Mustapha’s fellowship will support his ongoing exploration and documentation of the underlying issues around irregular migration in the Gambia, counter these issues among young people through school programmes, and help influence and shape the public narrative and messaging through positive social media messaging for young people and communities.
