"To educate the masses politically does not mean, cannot mean, making a political speech. What it means is to try, relentlessly and passionately, to teach the masses that everything depends on them; that if we stagnate it is their responsibility, and that if we go forward it is due to them too, that there is no such thing as a demiurge, that there is no famous man who will take the responsibility for everything, but that the demiurge is the people themselves and the magic hands are finally only the hands of the people.”

― Frantz Fanon, The Wretched of the Earth

DANGER OF GRADUATES THAT DON'T THINK BEYOND THEIR CERTIFICATES

_By Gbenga Adebambo_

“Education is what remains after one has forgotten everything he learned in school. It is a miracle that curiosity survives formal education” — Albert Einstein

The greatest form of disability in life is not knowing your ability. Your winning edge in life is not the degree you have acquired or the certificate you possessed, but your ability to solve problems.

Whenever I interview graduates, I am not so keen on their qualifications; I am only keen on their special skills, experiences and their unique approach to problem-solving. Most of them cannot even apply the knowledge they have acquired in school to solving life problems. The 21st Century employer doesn’t necessarily pay you a salary for the certificate you possess, but for the problems you can solve.

The reality of life is that there are more employable graduates than the available jobs, and it is only graduates that can actually think beyond their certificate that would eventually find their own place in life. Mark Twain said: “Don’t let schooling interfere with your education.” The proof of going to school is your certificate, but the proof of your education is in your ability to solve problems through innovation and creativity.

Graduates that cannot solve problems are liabilities. Education is not just about going to school and getting a degree; it is about widening your knowledge, thinking creatively and absorbing the truth about life. We must see our education beyond our certificates. Many people spend their precious years in school only to end up acquiring certificate, not education. Einstein said: “Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think.” Have you ever heard of the creativity term, ‘think outside the box?’

One of the major reasons why most graduates are poor is because they cannot see and think beyond their certificates.

*We Need a Revolution Now!*

Africa certainly needs a revolution; but, not a revolution that will destabilise our society and leave the masses stranded.

I mean, we need a revolution that will systematically transform our society without breaking it. We need a revolution of the minds of the masses. We all point figures at the leadership of Africa. Yes, Leadership is a problem, but that is insignificant proportion of the problems we face today because leaders are always choosen from and among the masses. They were one of us before moving to occupy that position. How different am I in my own life or position? This is a question we all have to ask and genuinely seek answers from our hearts.

Many a times, many of us say we need action! What kind of Action? And action from whom? I always ask myself. More often when I press further, I come know that the youth who are calling for action have no plan except the wish to also seeing themselves eating from the exploitative table we genuinely have to throw away. They are in most cases not even ready to be part of positive actions that genuinely seek to build Africans to transform Africa. Just like the so called leaders, the masses are waiting on aid, support, and a savior to undertake for them, the positive actions that will see Africa transform for generations.

Again, I want to sincerely remind us all that, many of the old African leaders we see today, who are feeding on the helpless masses of Africans, had the same mentality of the African youth of today, some of them genuinely wished to do something to help what they saw as wrongs, they acted, ceased power only to suppress the people, enriched themselves at the expense of the people, and stayed in power till their old ages today.

Should we make the same mistake and create a worse future for the next generations?
We need to keep waking up the masses; when the masses are awake, the leaders can't be asleep.

11 African countries with the highest cattle population

Ethiopia: 70.3 million herds of cattle.
Chad: 32.2 million herds of cattle.
Sudan: 31.8 million herds of cattle
Tanzania; 28.3 million herds of cattle
Kenya: 21.7 million herds of cattle
Nigeria; 20.7 million herds of cattle
Niger:16.1 million herds of cattle
Uganda: 15.5 million herds of cattle
South Sudan: 13.8 million herds of cattle
Mali: 12.5 million herds of cattle
South Africa:12.3 million herds of cattle.

Hundreds of millions of people around the world eat beef daily. In the same vein, they consume other cattle by-products such as milk and cheese. This high demand for beef, milk and other related products has created a huge global market. It is also the very reason why cows are such highly priced possessions for farmers around the world. The huge opportunities inherent in cattle rearing have spurred the curiosity to find out which countries have the highest cattle population in Africa.

Poor governance poses a serious problem in Africa, the region should be one of the most prosperous on the planet.
Poor governance and corruption generates distortions and drives public investment away from priority sectors and towards projects where bribes and kickbacks are more frequent. Things must change for good, to avoid continuing to imperil the continent’s economic development.
Solving the problem of poor governance in Africa will contribute to the structural transformation of its economies.
Africa is a wealthy continent."Africa is not poor, its poorly managed."
Lack of skilled human capital in resource-rich Africa: The real paradox?
"The education that Africa needs is one that is skills-based, technologically grounded and globally competitive,"
The poor level of skills and institutional development in natural resource management observed in most resource-rich African countries comes not only from the lack of incentives to invest in human capital but also from the perverse effects of the international division of labour.
" We must create economic opportunity, build a culture of entrepreneurship, get people to take responsibility for improving their lives, rather than putting them in a position where they sit back in their poverty and blame others for it."
Paul Kagame
Most resource-rich African countries lack specialised training institutes of management of their natural wealth. Yet human capital is a key factor for economic growth and features as one of the strategic axes of development in Africa.

Ancient name of Africa

Before the European settled for the word Africa, the continent was called many other names. They include Corphye, Ortigia,Libya, and Ethiopia, Alkebulan

Other names such as the land of Ham (Ham means dark skins), mother of mankind, the garden of Eden, Kingdoms in the sky, and the land of cush or kesh (referring to the Cush*tes who were ancient Ethiopian) were used.

No one knows the source of the names for sure. However, the theories below shed some light on how this second largest continent got its new name.

Roman theory
Some scholars believe that the word originated from the Romans. Romans discovered a land opposite the Mediterranean and named it after the Berber tribe residing within the Carnage area, presently referred to as Tunisia. The tribe's name was Afri.

Weather theory
Some believe that the name was coiled from the continent's climate. Deriving from aphrike, a Greek word that means a land free from cold and horror. A variation of the Roman word aprica, which means sunny, or even the Phoenician word afar, which means dust.

Africus Theory
This claims that the continent derived its name from Africus. Africus is a Yemenite chieftain who invaded the northern part in the second millennium BC,It is argued that he settled on his conquered land and named it Afrikyah.

Phoenician Theory
Another school of thought suggests that the name is derived from two Phoenician words friqi and pharika. The words mean corns and fruits when translated. Hypothetically the Phoenician christened the continent as the land of corns and fruits.

Alkebu-lan “mother of mankind” or “garden of Eden”.” Alkebulan is the oldest and the only word of indigenous origin. It was used by the Moors,Nubians, Numidians,Khart-Haddans (Carthagenians) and Ethiopians.

There is little or no certainty on the source or meaning Africa. Several scholars have tried to explain the origin of the word, but none is convincingly correct.

"I had no epiphany, no singular revelation, no moment of truth, but a steady accumulation of a thousand slights, a thousand indignities and a thousand unremembered moments produced in me an anger, a rebelliousness, a desire to fight the system that imprisoned my people. There was no particular day on which I said, Henceforth I will devote myself to the liberation of my people; instead, I simply found myself doing so, and could not do otherwise.”
Nelson Mandela

"There were a few farsighted Europeans who all along saw that the colonial educational system would serve them if and when political independence was regained in Africa.
For instance, Pierre Foncin, a founder of the Alliance Francaise, stated at the beginning of this century that "it is necessary to attach the colonies to the metropolis by a very solid psychological bond, against the day when their progressive emancipation ends in a federation as is probable that they be and they remain French in language, thought and spirit."
Walter Rodney
