Transport Union steps in to avoid traffic chaos during OIC summit

The Gambia Transport Union has joined the national call for orderliness during the upcoming OIC summit by urging drivers to strictly adhere to traffic regulations and keep a free flow of traffic.

In a statement released yesterday, the GTU said traffic forecasts and analyses indicate a projected increase in the volume of vehicles and overall traffic flow during the summit.

“Consequently, the GTU urges drivers to exhibit heightened professionalism, exercise caution, and cooperate with security directives, including any necessary diversions implemented during the event,” the statement said.

The GTU said it is important for drivers to observe road safety standards and maintain the country’s esteemed reputation as the Smiling Coast of Africa.

“We urge all our members to continue demonstrating exemplary hospitality and to serve as ambassadors, reflecting positively on the nation’s image,” the GTU said.

The union congratulated President Adama Barrow, the government and the Gambian people for the honor to host such an important global event.

7 MEDIA HOUSES CONTRACTED ABOUT D40M TO PROMOTE GOV’T AGENDA

At least five media houses and two content creators have been handed about D40 million contract to promote and popularise the Gambia government agenda.

They are The Fatu Network, Star TV, QTV, Paradise TV and Eye Africa while Sparkling Media and Fandema multimedia are the content providers.

The contract will last one year and each media house will receive over D5 million.

Confirming this to The Standard, the permanent secretary, Ministry of Information, explained that the contract will require the beneficiary media houses to promote public access to information on government initiatives, projects and development-focused programs, policies and legal frameworks.

Yankuba Saidy disclosed that the media houses are also required to “live-stream government events, initiate panel discussions on government matters and promote public, private and civil society dialogue.”

‘GRA collected over D9B revenue in 7 months’

The Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA) has continued to professionally discharge its responsibility and prove its mettle as it has collected a whopping 9.478 billion dalasis in just seven months by end-July 2023, a statement by the Authority has said.

GRA under the dynamic leadership of Commissioner General Yankuba Darboe was tasked to collect an overall annual revenue target of D15.208 billion in 2023. “As at end July 2023 the Authority collected D9.478 billion, which represented 62% of the annual revenue target,” the statement said.

The performance of GRA as at end July 2023 represented 5 percent or D426.52 million above their revenue target of D9.052 billion for the period (Jan – July 2023).

The Authority also registered an unprecedented collection in July 2023, having collected D1.597 billion, making it the highest single month total revenue collection since the creation of GRA.

“This revenue collection performance for July 2023, exceeded the D1.279 billion revenue target for the month by a whopping 25% or D318.07 million,” the statement explained.

In confirming the statement, Commissioner General Darboe explained that GRA was given a monthly revenue target of (D1.279billion) for the month of July 2023 but due to the hard work, commitment, and collective efforts by the staff and management of GRA, the Authority collected almost D1.6 billion in a single month thus exceeding the previous record of D1.593 billion set in March 2023.

The Commissioner General reiterated his recognition of the positive impact of the ASYCUDA WORLD implementation on international trade receipts, the reduction of subsidies granted on fuel and the improvements in revenue administration, such as increased taxpayer education, audit coverage, data matching and enforcement among other factors.

CG Darboe, an exemplary leader with sound foresight, also praised the Ministry of Finance and Econo

Hon. Touma calls for inquiry into coups in W/Africa

Honourable Fatoumatta Touma Njai, a member of the Gambian delegation to the ECOWAS Parliament and the National Assembly Member for Banjul South, has called for a thorough soul-searching into the underlining issues resulting in coups in the West African sub-region.

Speaking in an interview with The Point newspaper, the Banjul South NAM says she believes the state of people’s poor living conditions as they watch the political elite lavish the meagre resources of the state, attracts the unwanted menace of coups in the sub-region.

Madam Njai asserts that the coup in Niger is not against ECOWAS but a revolution against their colonial master - the French.

“I think we are ignoring the obvious. In as much as we all do not want coup d’état, we must also look into the matters that attract this unwanted menace,” she said.

“Our people are dying of hunger, of poverty, of common diseases that no one in the developed countries suffer from now. We still see our leaders lavishing the meagre resources of state that we have. We understand the frustrations of Nigeria and its concerns as it borders Niger.

“However, the writings have been on the wall. This is not against ECOWAS. I believe it is a revolution against their colonial master - the French.”

Touma added that the monies being paid to them as state authorities, if she was not mistaken, could have alternatively been budgeted to reduce the unwarranted misery in the region. “And they should also ask themselves why they are still struggling to have their own currency,” she remarked, saying: “Last but not the least; we mustn’t be caught up in any western country’s matters.”

She urged ECOWAS to keep to dialogue and not to shun countries under these situations.

“Our community citizens’ lives matter and mostly it is us the poor women and children that suffer the most,” she reasons. “I call on the Parliament to mediate, es

Vision Prod Music seeks to give grassroots artists opportunities
Aug 11, 2023, 1:13 PM | Article By: Ali Jaw

Vision Prod Music, a music label that newly stormed The Gambia entertainment industry, seeks to assist and give more opportunities to artists in The Gambia. The label already has a few artists under its arms, whom it is guiding and helping to attain their dreams of stardom.
Speaking with The Point Entertainment about their objective, Mr Ebrima Roberts, the founder of the label, said: “from a long time, it has been among my dreams to be part of the music industry in The Gambia. Music has been my hobby, an art I cherish since my childhood.

“I can’t be an artist in the music industry, but I believe I can contribute to help the grassroots by establishing a music label in The Gambia.”

He added: “Right now I have four artists under me, and I do everything for them, like recording, videography and photo-shoot. I myself am a videographer, and that’s what I used to do for a living.

“I believe this will greatly help the grassroots because I have realized that music is so expensive in The Gambia. We have many folks that are so when it comes to it. Many have been recording for a long time and have recorded many songs, but they don’t have visual (videos).”

Mr Roberts further told The Point Entertainment that this is the quarter he wants to contribute towards the development of his country.

Gambian popular music began in the 1960s. Hip-hop and other genres, such as dancehall and reggae, started in the late 1990s and emerged to gain popularity amongst some localities.

However, Gambian artists remain some of the most suffering folks in the country financially, although a few have achieved popularity and relative success over the years. The industry is also yet to gain international attention.

Mr Roberts and his team seek to be amongst those who would change this trajectory by helping artists, especially those struggling.

Meanwhile, the label also offers professiona

Sukuta

A son allegedly stabbed his father in the buttocks with a broken bottle after finding him on top of his girlfriend in his room in Sukuta.

A source disclosed: "The incident happened three years ago in Sukuta. The son went to buy food for his girlfriend and while he was away, his father sneaked into the room and started having s*x with the young woman."

According to our source, the son couldn't believe his eyes when he found his drunk father, engaging in a s*xual act with his girlfriend, who was a "crackhead".

The son allegedly grabbed a bottle that he used to strike his father in the buttocks.

Our source further revealed that the father was quickly rushed to the Sukuta Health Centre and the son was arrested and detained at the Sukuta Police Station.

But the case was later dropped after mediation by some elders in the community.
