Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, Minister of Information, has acknowledged a mistake in his recent comments about the diaspora while affirming President Adama Barrow's right to run for a third term in the 2026 election. In a previous interview, he expressed confidence that Barrow would win, despite opposition from some groups.
Ceesay apologized for any offense his remarks about the diaspora may have caused, emphasizing his respect for those who support their families back in The Gambia, having experienced living abroad himself. He stated that while he believes Barrow's constitutional right to run remains valid, he regrets how he articulated this view, admitting it did not reflect his character. Ceesay highlighted the importance of learning from mistakes in public life and vowed to communicate better in the future.

Sad country!
Are we truly a serious country? Since last week, newspapers —especially The Standard— have been obsessively covering the Spain-Gambia migrant work agreement.
To the Barrow government, this deal is one of their proudest achievements. Very sad!
While other nations are investing in policies that support education and skills training to equip young people for the future, our government is more focused on sending young Gambians to Spain to do manual labor.
So disappointed in The Standard! Rather than examining the details of the agreement, they’re busy promoting it as if it’s some kind of transformative solution that will make the country the “Singapore of Africa.”

Transport Union steps in to avoid traffic chaos during OIC summit

The Gambia Transport Union has joined the national call for orderliness during the upcoming OIC summit by urging drivers to strictly adhere to traffic regulations and keep a free flow of traffic.

In a statement released yesterday, the GTU said traffic forecasts and analyses indicate a projected increase in the volume of vehicles and overall traffic flow during the summit.

“Consequently, the GTU urges drivers to exhibit heightened professionalism, exercise caution, and cooperate with security directives, including any necessary diversions implemented during the event,” the statement said.

The GTU said it is important for drivers to observe road safety standards and maintain the country’s esteemed reputation as the Smiling Coast of Africa.

“We urge all our members to continue demonstrating exemplary hospitality and to serve as ambassadors, reflecting positively on the nation’s image,” the GTU said.

The union congratulated President Adama Barrow, the government and the Gambian people for the honor to host such an important global event.

7 MEDIA HOUSES CONTRACTED ABOUT D40M TO PROMOTE GOV’T AGENDA

At least five media houses and two content creators have been handed about D40 million contract to promote and popularise the Gambia government agenda.

They are The Fatu Network, Star TV, QTV, Paradise TV and Eye Africa while Sparkling Media and Fandema multimedia are the content providers.

The contract will last one year and each media house will receive over D5 million.

Confirming this to The Standard, the permanent secretary, Ministry of Information, explained that the contract will require the beneficiary media houses to promote public access to information on government initiatives, projects and development-focused programs, policies and legal frameworks.

Yankuba Saidy disclosed that the media houses are also required to “live-stream government events, initiate panel discussions on government matters and promote public, private and civil society dialogue.”
