WENCHI: ISD EDUCATES PUBLIC ON NEW CURRICULUM INTRODUCED BY NACCA SECONDARY SCHOOLS
The Municipal Directorate of the Information Services Department (ISD) has embarked on a Public Education Campaign (PEC) on new Curriculum that has been developed and introduced for implementation by the National Council for Curriculum Assessment (NaCCA) for Secondary Education in Ghana.
The Public Education Campaign (PEC) sought to provide details on the dimensions of the new Curriculum and sensitize Stakeholders and the general public. The PEC Team led by the the Municipal Information Officer Mr Stanick Sofel Amuzu Kpodo carried out the Exercise on the Information Mobile Cinema Van, Community Information Centres (CICs), Radio Stations in the Area.
The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) has introduced a new Curriculum for Secondary Education comprising Senior High Schools SHS), Senior High Technical Schools (SHTS) as well as Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Schools in Ghana witha central theme "Ghana's New Future: Learn Today, Lead Tomorrow".
The Information Services Department in Wenchi is on an intensive Public Education Campaign (PEC) sensitising Stakeholders and the general public about the new Curriculum developed and implemented by the Council.
Beginning 2024/2025 Academic Year, the new Curriculum takes effect with the new 1st Year SHS Students who had reported to School.
The new Curriculum seeks to equip all learners with the requisite knowledge, practical skills, competencies, character qualities and shared Ghanaian values to help achieve their full potential in life. The new Curriculum will prepare and challenge learners to live responsible adult life, further their education and enter the world of work with utmost control and command over their profession.
The new Curriculum focuses on national values and educate a generation of youth who are proud of our country and contribute effectively and meaningfully to national development. To replace the Teacher-know-all System of teaching. Instil practicality into our lessons to fit into their field of expertise. To end the "chew-pour-pass and forget" education system with Standard-based curriculum.
Features of the new Curriculum;
Subject Flexibility: The new Curriculum offers learners the freedom to choose subjects that align with their interests, practical skills and career aspirations.
Subject Combinations: The new Curriculum allows learners to choose between a total minimum of 7 Subjects thus 4 Core and 3 Electives and a maximum of 9 Subjects thus 4 Core and 5 Electives for the three years. Some of the Subjects can be selected for one year along the line in the 3 year course. JHS graduates entering the SHS will choose general learning areas such as General Arts, Science, Languages, STEM, Applied Technology, Home Economics, Business Studies.
Innovation and Adaptability: The new Curriculum prepares learners for the modern world by teaching skills like critical thinking, problem-solving and creativity. Future ready empowering learners to excel in today's job market with the 21st Century practical skills designed to meet the challenges and opportunities tomorrow.
Learner Centred: The new Curriculum places the learner at the centre of teaching and learning encouraging discovery and exploration. The learner is the core with hands-on, interactive learning that builds on their existing life experiences, knowledge and understanding. The teacher is the Facilitator.
Culture Relevance: The new Curriculum instills pride in Ghana's heritage, Ghanaian values integrated into daily learning to foster responsible citizenship.
Balanced Assessment: The new Curriculum entails balanced assessments beyond theoretical exams to practical, project-based and performance-driven evaluations.
Philosophy and Subject Vision: Each Subject has its own philosophy and vision, which sets out why the subject is being taught and its contribution to national development.
Gender Equality and Social Inclusion: The new Curriculum is not only a modern educational tool, but also a social transformation drive in Ghana to create a more inclusive society where every learner can succeed regardless of gender or background.
The new Curriculum prioritizes equipping learners with the 21st Century skills and Ghanaian values needed for their personal growth, future education, professional careers and leadership. It captures the essence of building responsible, skilled and proud generation ready to lead and contribute to Ghana's development while resonating with all target audiences including students, teachers, parents.
