TAKORADI (T’AADI)
The Takoradi that most of you did not see was noted as the social centre spot in West Africa for seafarers'. Columbia, Zenith, Mainland Social Centre, Prempeh, Princess Cinema, Harbour View, Mikado, Club Ampezo or Chez Danas, Atlantic Hotel were notable spots for refreshment and relaxation for seafarers and visitors.
Takoradi could boast of the best Dance Bands in Ghana thrilling audience with tantalizing atmosphere of musical vibration. The Broadways Band owned by Mr. Agyapong, thrilled guys from John Sarbah Road, Railway and Port Quarters, including Type C. Police quarters down to Presby area. The Railport Dance Band owned by Railway and Ports, led by El~Gran Kwofie and Mark Andoh until it was changed to Silver tracks when Railway was exercised from Ports Authority. Their base was Harbour View and Sekondi Railway Recretional Centre. We had Carouzel 7 led by CK Mann occupying Princess Carousel Ago~go under the management of Anice Moubarak with Coconut 7 Band attached. The Skyhawks Band under Ghana Airforce are always playing at Princess, and the Arakan Dance Band from Myoung Barracks, Apremdo was owned by Ghana Army. Medican Lantics led by Arthur Kennedy were stationed at the Atlantic Hotel.
Western fo, ye wo adze oye, most of Ghana's best musicians came from Takoradi with the likes of Sammy Obot, (trumpet) Marco Bass( Sax) Johnny Wood (keyboard) BB Be Be Boogaloo (Vocals) Sam Ojewumi (Trumpet) these were Nigerians brought up in Takdi playing for different Bands, most specially Broadways Band. Takoradi produced AB Crentsil, Jewel Ackah, P*e Bart, Andy Vans, Kiki Gyan of Osibisa fame, Allen, Papa Yankson, CK Mann, Overseas based Afro Moses, Mani from Cote D' Ivoire. In Sports, Takoradi was noted as hotbed for talents with the Police Park famously known to have produced players of yester years. We had two heavy weight boxers representing Ghana, Ekow kranie (Go man go) and BB Brown (Railway Quarters)
BB Brown was a Liberian fighting for Ghana. He had a bout with Idi Amin, who later became President of Uganda in Conakry. We had another lady from Railway quarters who represented Ghana in Olympics and the Commonwealth games. She was Rose Hart, she was an athlete and at the same time Table tennis champion, Ghana and Africa. Her father was a driver with Railways. There was another girl, a Nigerian, staying at Railway quarters, she passed out from Bishop Amissah Middle, competed with Alice Anum and also represented Ghana in athlete by name 'Baby Santo' There was this lady who became MISS GHANA from New Takoradi, name forgotten in the 60's. Takoradi produced the first female Navigators in Africa. Miss Georgina Bus kwofie (Railway quarters) and co. and later to become a Ship Captain.
The city at a time was seen as a place for the recruitment of the best seafarers in West Africa. Elder Dempster Lines, Palm Line, Farrel Lines, Nigeria National Shipping Line were all tapping from the pool of seamen abound in Takoradi. For my analysis, Takoradi was seen as one of the most civilised city in West Africa.
In International Affairs, Takoradi has made a name. It was here Ex. President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, as a teacher started his guerrilla initiatives before moving to Zimbabwe. We also gathered from reliable information that Sam Njuoma of Namibia took off from Takoradi to start his own guerrilla warfare in Namibia. Niger Delta Revolutionalist, known as Isaac Jasper Adaka Boro who was an active participator of the Nigeria ~ Biafran civil war embarked on his journey to create the Niger Delta Revolution which coincided with the Nigerian civil war from Takoradi Railway quarters, near famous Doo Dae drinking spot where he addressed the Ijaw Community.
The first President of Nigeria, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe stowed away on a steamship to Takoradi and stayed at Esikado while he established the West African Pilot newspapers before going to the USA. Former Premier of Western Nigeria, Sir Obafemi Awolowo visited Takoradi by sea onboard M/V 'Aureol' with his wife Hannah. He addressed Nigerian community at Zenith Mogambo hall and said Takoradi was the best and hospitable city he has visited in Africa.
President WVS Tubman of Liberia also came with a Yatch by sea from Monrovia with a stop over enroute Tema to see Kwame Nkrumah. To be continued........enjoy reading as we hit you with more history of our own beloved Takoradi.
