Mustapha Ussif Fires 'Bonuses-Focused' National Team Players

Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon Mustapha Ussif could not hide his displeasure over what he suggests was selfish on the part of some players who represent the country in international competitions.

There have been reports of player agitation over unpaid bonuses during national team competitions.

This was even the case during the recently held U23 AFCON in Morocco leading to Ghana's exit after the Group stage.

Speaking at the 29th GFA Ordinary Congress in Kumasi, the Minister said it's time for the players to value the national colors and flag.

“I find it very difficult to comprehend and understand that the state will make all the resources available by making sure that we want to give opportunity to all our national teams, get them flight tickets for camping opportunities, accommodate them for a very long period, feed them, give them trial matches,

"...then when these players get to tournament, instead of focusing on the tournament, the focus is now on bonuses,"

"Is time for our players to value the national colors, the flag of our country, the flag of our nation,” Mustapha Ussif added.

Meanwhile, one of Ghana's biggest player standoffs occurred during the 2014 World Cup where the Black Stars players agitated over appearance fees leading to a first-round exit in Brazil.

2022/23 Ghana Premier League Week 31: Karela United vs Great Olympics Preview - Rustum Gameli Senorgbe Takes Center Stage in survival Battle

Karela United and Great Olympics will be looking to steer clear of the drop when they match up in the Ghana Premier League week 21 clash at the CAM Park on Sunday.

Despite having a good record at home, Karela finds themselves just a point above the relegation zone with 39 points.

Three wins and the draw against league leaders Aduana Stars in their last four games spell a fair warning for the visiting Great Olympics.

Results have particularly not been forthcoming for Bismark Kobi-Mensah since taking over as coach of the Dade Boys.

The side managed wins over Asante Kotoko and Kotoku Royals yet dropped as many points in the process.

Great Olympics sit outside the drop zone courtesy of a goal difference and anything than a win on Sunday could see them drop further.

Anticipating an intense clash at the CAM Park, the appointment committee of the Ghana football association has selected class one referee Rustum Gameli Senorgbe as the center referee for the match.

Having delivered on several occasions this season, the Ho-based referee's decisiveness and consistency will be tested once again.

Rustum will be assisted by Theophilus Akugre and Richard on the lines.

Andrews Awurisa will be the fourth referee while Samuel Gyasi will act as match commissioner.

The match is scheduled for 3 PM local time.

Charles Taylor: Kurt Okraku Should Go Unopposed

Charles Taylor believes that Ghana Football Association (GFA) president Kurt Okraku should go unopposed in the upcoming elections.

The Ghanaian football administrator will see his tenure as FA president end in October this year.

However, Kurt will be up for reelection although it is unknown whether he will face competition from other football administrators.

But speaking to Angel TV, Charles Taylor says that the former Executive Chairman of Dreams FC should be allowed to continue without opposition.

"I would want Kurt Okraku to continue his tenure as the GFA President for the next few years. I believe he should go unopposed," the Ghana Premier League legend told Angel TV.

So far only the President of the Berekum Chelsea Bernard Amofa Jantuah has expressed interest in contesting for the top FA position.

The GFA elections is scheduled for October 2023.

Boxing: Freezy MacBones Chooses UK over Ghana

Seth Gyimah, popularly known as Freezy MacBones has switched nationality from Ghana to the UK, the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has confirmed.

President of the GBA, Abraham Neequaye revealed that the boxer despite reaching out to the GBA for a license to pursue his boxing career changed his mind to represent the UK at the last minute.

"We sent him a message. And they can check it from Freezy himself. Before he fought in the UK, he came to Ghana to get a Ghana Boxing Authority license,”

“He came for our license but when he wanted to fight and they wanted to get a release letter from us, he changed it to fight for the British. He was supposed to come for a release letter from us but he said he wanted to fight as UK national.” Abraham Neequaye is quoted to have told Romeo TV.

The 33-year-old having left Ghana to pursue greener pastures in the UK shot to the limelight after a video of his bout suffice on social media.

Seth Gyimah is currently living a grass-to-grace story following his dominant win over the veteran Darryl Sharp.

Meanwhile, the GBA president reiterated that there is little the association can do if a boxer decides to represent another country.

If the person has our license and he wants to fight and then puts our license down and picks another license to fight under that license, how do you expect me to go and beg this gentleman to come, no? We have a lot of boxers here that we need to develop,” he added.
