Ghana Catholic Church supporting poor and vulnerable

The Catholic Church in Ghana through its humanitarian and development agency, Caritas Ghana, has put together an emergency response plan to reach out to the poor and vulnerable in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Angela Ofosu Boateng – Accra, Ghana
Speaking in an interview with The Catholic Standard recently, the Executive Secretary of Caritas Ghana, Samuel Zan Akologo, hinted that as part of its comprehensive plan, the Church is providing basic needs to the poor especially the homeless and people in great need following the partial lockdown in some parts of the country..
Charitas Ghana working with dioceses
Caritas Ghana, he said, was working closely with parishes in these areas to provide temporary shelter and feeding centres for the homeless. Akologo explained that since the strength of Caritas is community-based, the organisation is working proactively and coordinating support at the level of diocesan Caritas organisations. In the short term, parish facilities are being used “to provide shelter and food for the homeless. Currently, Kumasi Archdiocese is hosting about 600 extremely poor persons. At the same time, Accra Archdiocese has around 1, 400 in more than 15 Parishes,” he said.
Christ the King Parish Soup Kitchen
Akologo added that Caritas Ghana would also liaise with security agencies to allow its emergency teams reach out to the homeless and marginalised to provide them with critical support. He noted that the Church’s humanitarian service was not just a fire fighting or ad-hoc approach, but that in the long term, the Church would consider replicating the Soup Kitchen feeding programme organised by Fr. Andrew Campbell, Parish Priest of Christ the King Church in Accra.
According to Fr. Campbell, in the past few days, his Soup Kitchen has provided meals to over 800 children around Kanda, Independence Square, Opeibea, Maamobi, Tema Station and the National Theatre, all in Accra with only an initial amount of GHC 50,000 (appx. USD 8, 650).
Appeal for support
Akologo appealed to donors, in the country and foreign partner agencies, for contingency support to enable Caritas Ghana carry out its mandate of supporting the poor and vulnerable in line with the Church’s mission.

COCOA DISTRICT: GWIRA COMMUNITY RECIEVES FERTILIZERS.

Cocoa farmers in Gwira community of the Nzema East Municipality in the Western Region of Ghana have received truck loads of fertilizer. Farmers in the area can heave a great sigh of relief as this is the first time the fertilizers have been brought to their doorstep.

The Gwira enclave, which forms part of the Evalue Ajomoro Gwira constituency is the main bread basket of the Nzema East Municipality and produces tons of Cocoa to augment Cocoa production in the country.

Farmers in the area have to travel to Ellembelle, Ahanta West, Prestea Hunivalley and Amenfi East, to buy farming inputs which affected their farming activities. Some spent weeks in these locations before they were served.

In the run up to the 2016 Elections, Hon Catherine Abelema Afeku promised that when voted as the member of Parliament, she would lobby for Gwira to get a Cocoa district. True to her word, in 2017 Hon Catherine invited Cocobod officials to Gwira for assessment and approval. On the second day of December,2019, the CEO of Cocobod,Mr.Joseph Boahen Aidoo, Hon Catherine Afeku and the MCE officially declared the Nzema East Municipality as a Cocoa District in a colourful event involving the Chiefs and people of Gwira.

The manifestation of the COCOA District is evident in Gwiraman taking delivery of thousands of bags of fertilizer in Gwira Asuawuah, Ampansie, Eshiem etc to serve the needs of Cocoa farmers. The farmers were so elated and amazed when they saw the trucks in their communities. Some major roads in the Gwira enclave which have never seen bitumen before have been earmarked under the Cocoa Roads initiative as a major benefit of being a Cocoa District.
The main Gwira Aiyinase to Gwira Wiawso road is also under construction.

FROM THE ARCHIVES:

How GFA and Black Stars Management decided on Kwasi Appiah as captain of Black Stars ahead of Abedi Pele with 30 minutes to a crucial game.

As you can see in this picture, Kwasi Appiah was captain of the Black Stars with Abedi Pele as deputy.

This was an African Cup of Nations Qualifier vs Nigeria in 1990 at the Kumasi stadium. The Black Stars had failed to qualify for the three previous AFCON tournaments (1986,1988 and 1990).

The captaincy had evolved around three or four players in those difficult period with Opoku Nti the most consistent of the lot

When German Bukhard Ziesse was finally brought in to steer the team to the 1992 AFCON in Senegal, there were other top Technical men such as late EK Afranie, late CK Gyamfi, late Sam Addy etc all hands on deck to support.

No stone was to be left unturned.

Ghana against Nigeria was always that crucial. The team's local contingent had returned from series of training camps ahead of the start of the qualifiers.

The hope and enthusiasm had returned. Kumasi was chosen as the centre for Ghana's AFCON resurrection.

Even though Kwesi Appiah had captained the team for some friendly matches, there was no substantive skipper for the side.

Abedi Pele by then, was the biggest African player anywhere. He wasn't available for all of Bukhard Ziesse's team training ahead of the game. His presence at training wasn't important.

Abedi was in the thick of events for his French side Marseille in the UEFA Champions League, and the President of the club, Bernard Tapei, would only allow him leave with a day or two to Ghana's matches. Sometimes, he arrived with hours to Ghana matches and still started.

He would deliver too

To emphasize how important Abedi was to Marseille, he was usually flown to Accra in a private jet owned by Marseille President.

The aircraft will be in wait for Abedi to finish the game for Ghana and be flown back to France the night after the game.

In this match vs Nigeria for instance, Abedi arrived at the wee hours of the match day, had to get enough sleep at the City Hotel, then chauffeured to the stadium for the pre-match warm up.

When the team regrouped in the dressing room before the match, then the most important event took place.

Time to name Ghana's captain for the game and subsequent ones.

Team Manager Sam Addy, with the captain's band in hand, approached Abedi and Kwesi Appiah (the senior members of the team) and asked them who among the two was first to feature for the National Team. This was in the presence of CK Gyamfi, Bukhard and Afranie.

It is said Kwasi didnt readily recollect whether he was was the senior or Abedi.

Then the Maestro (Abedi Pele) came in and indicated that, coincidentally, he and Kwasi Appiah both made their debut for the Black Stars in the same game.

But it was rather Kwasi who started as he Pele was a 16 year-old and started from the bench.

It was also a crucial AFCON qualifier in August 1981 vs the dreaded Zaire side.

Zaire had travelled to Kumasi to draw 2-2 with Ghana in the first leg and the return leg was a must win for Ghana or the Black Stars are out.

The then trusted left back, Ofei Ansah was taken injured weeks to the game. His replacement, Hesse Odamtten was also injured in training.

Then the team had to fall back on a young Asante Kotoko defender, Kwasi Appiah.

Kwasi then started the game at left back and it was in this game that Kwasi Appiah earned the famous nickname 'Mayele'.

Mayele was the Congolese most feared striker who devoured the Black Stars defence in Kumasi in the reverse.

So for Kwasi Appiah to have kept him abay (inside his pocket throughout the match) resulted in the Ghanaian commentator giving him that name.

Abedi was still on the bench until munites to the second half, when Adolf Armah, Ghana's trusted midfielder was taken out for not living up.

Then a young skinny boy, from Tamale was ushered in to take Armah's place. That day, Abedi Pele's name would permeate Zaire and Africa. Every touch invited cheers even from the home fans.

He run the show and was at the mercy of several brutal tackles from the Zaire defenders because that was the only easy to stop the boy. Zambian referees Chabalamuna Chayu had to stop the match several times to save the lil kid.

Ghana won the match 2-1 in Kinshasha of all venues and qualified for Libya (where we won our 4th AFCON).

Back to the captaincy inside the Kumasi stadium dressing room.

With Abedi admitting that he and Kwasi both played in the same game but Kwasi was a starter, the authorities handed the armband to Kwasi Appiah and he became the permanent captain, leading the team to the AFCON in Senegal.

Ghana won this game vs Nigeria by 1-0 in Kumasi, in front of over 50,000 fans.

Today is 1st April and the day is popularly associated with pranks, thus the name April fool's day. But I want to send out this gentle plea to everyone who sees this message. These are not normal times. Do not prank someone in such a way that will make him/her susceptible to the Coronavirus. Do not send someone into public places, etc. In short, do not put lives at risk. Stay home, stay safe, and think of the safety of others.

Unveiling NZEMA PERSONALITIES.

This is not Tribal but very sad story. When you visit other regions and tribes, schools and colleges are named after their heroes and heroines.Roundabout, State institutions and others are named after prominent people. When you come to Nzema, not a single government project is named after our Nzema prominent people. Going to Ellembelle, the only S.H.S named after a prominent person is Bonzo Kaku Senior High School(BOKASS).

I will be happy if our politician such as Hon. Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah (MP), Hon Kwasi Bonzoh (DCE), NANA Kwabena Tumi, Hon. Freddie Worsemawu Armah Blay
,Dr. Sipa Yankey ,Awulae,Traditional rulers and others will have a look at my sober opinions.

Let do well to name our projects, schools, and institutions after our prominent people and this will serve as historical references to the unborn generation.

Bringing education closer to the people.

The St. Paul's catholic church at Bamiankor under the Axim parish has established a new private school at Anasara village. The distance from Anasara village to Bamiankor is very far which make it difficult for the children to attend.

The church executives then accepted the request of the villagers to establish a private school for them.

The church already has a private school at Bamiankor called St. Paul's Academy .

Ellembelle DCE Hon. Bonzoh K! condemns verbal attacks on NPP National Chairman

My attention has been drawn to some audios circulating on social media purporting to be the voice of Hon. Banabas Ewereko, elected Assemblyman for Asasetre Ebowu electoral area in the Ellembelle District in which he uses derogatory words against some Ellembelle NPP constituency executives and the NPP National Chairman Hon. Freddie Blay.

I wish to dissociate myself from the contents of the said audios and unequivocally condemn the author. Indeed, the contents are completely inconsistent with my personal views and principles in life.

While condemning him, I wish to admonish all others to refrain and desist from such acts of gross indiscipline and insurbordination towards the leadership of our great New Patriotic Party at the polling station, constituency, regional and national levels.

I therefore call on Hon. Banabas Ewereko to withdraw his uncouth words against people whose names he mentioned in those audios especially the NPP National Chairman, Honourable Freddie Blay and apologise unconditionally to them.

Thanks.

Hon. Kwasi Bonzoh.
DCE & NPP Parliamentary Candidate for Ellembelle Constituency

21/01/2020

Former CEO of COCOBOD, Dr. Stephen Opuni has filed a suit against the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Kwame Baffoe popularly known as Abronye DC, seeking 10 million cedis in general damages for accusing him of embezzlement.

Also joined in the suit is U2 Company Limited owners of United Television (UTV), and
Abronye has alleged on UTV that the National Democratic Congress doesn’t like a private firm Kroll and Associate because its forensic audit discovered an amount of $106 million belonging to COCOBOD was with an NDC financier Seidu Agongo. The maverick politician further claimed that the firm found out that “an amount belonging to COCOBOD, an amount belonging to Ghanaians $420 million is with Opuni and is at the Court…

“So, if someone has done a clean investigation and had found two NDC members, the company that Nana Yaw Osafo brought that had led to the arrest of two NDC members who are in court…”

Dr. Opuni who is an internationally acclaimed trauma and reconstructive surgeon said since the utterance of these words by Abronye in November 2019, he has been inundated with numerous calls and has had to answer “very embarrassing and difficult questions and inquiries” from different persons, including associates, colleagues, friends and concerned family members in Ghana and abroad.

In his statement of claim filed in December 2019, the plaintiff asserted that the comments by Abronye suggested that the former was “corrupt, a thief, reckless” in the discharge of his financial and administrative duties and had engaged in some unlawful criminal enterprise to the financial detriment of his previous employers and the government of Ghana.

According to Dr. Opuni, what the NPP chairman said “are not only inaccurate, but highly malicious and defamatory and deliberately contrived to reduce the hard-earned reputation and good name of Plaintiff”.

The statement therefore noted, “plaintiff denies that he has ever stolen/embezzled and/or otherwise taken possession of an amount of $42O million or any other amount of money from the COCOBOD or the Government of Ghana and that he has never been involved in any way whatsoever in any such fraudulent conduct as falsely contained in the publication under reference”.

Dr. Opuni, among others, is seeking exemplary damages of GHC10,000,000.00 against the defendants as well as a retraction and apology on the 2nd defendant’s UTV AdekyNsroma programme with the same prominence.

He is also seeking perpetual injunction restraining the defendants jointly and/or severally either by themselves or their agents, associates or assigns from further publishing or causing to be printed, published and or distributed or otherwise circulated the said defamatory words and or any other similar words;

The former COCOBOD boss also wants an order of the Court directed at the 2nd Defendant to remove or cause to be removed, the said defamatory content from its media platforms particularly its page where the said program was streamed live.

Gross salary for a graduate teacher in the service for 10 years is what you see below (2,200 GHS per month). Tell me, how can this person save and then be able to buy the 120,000 dollars land some in Accra?

A graduate teacher in the UK with same experience can buy a house easily--and travel abroad for holidays 2 or 3 times a year, and can own a nice BMW or Benz.

This amount, 2200 GHS is how much you will spend in a month if you just decide to have once a week breakfast at Holiday Inn or Golden Tulip in Ghana. And if a graduate teacher who has been working for 10 years cannot eat at such places once a week, then what's the stress all for in this life?

My argument is that, things are super expensive in Ghana--and the people are paid peanuts.

You can find a Marriott or Holiday Inn hotel one night stay for less than 100 pounds in every country in Europe--in Ghana, they will ask for 400 or 500 pounds per night.

The Ghanaian system as it stands breeds corruption. Unless you are corrupt, you can't live good (and I mean this)--you cannot have any of those modern posh apartments or houses to call your home.

How many people can buy a car on their current salary in Ghana. In the UK, your minimum wage salary of about £1,400 per month can buy 3 good running cars per month. Minimum wage of a month in Ghana of about 200 GHS cannot even buy a single decent meal at Golden Tulip.

Why are they doing this to us and people can't even see it?

A lot of you cannot even go out to a nice place to eat or drink once a month--because a sitting is your entire monthly salary. Common good ambience and food cannot be afforded.

And let me add this, don't try to get a loan in Ghana--the interest from the Banks alone will kill your unborn children.

In such a system, your only option is to be corrupt--to live better.God have mercy in us..cheers

Ps: Not my work. Dunno the writer
