Introducing Dwanwura, Okorfrobour Awase Afura III — a custodian of heritage, a symbol of dignity, and a living testament to the enduring spirit of the Dwan people. His leadership embodies wisdom, continuity, and the timeless values that bind community, culture, and identity.

The Dwan, a Guan subgroup in Ghana, speak the Dwan language and are primarily located in the Sene West District of the Bono East Region, with Kwame Danso as their traditional capital. Under the guidance of their Paramount Chief, they preserve their cultural heritage, oversee local governance, and celebrate traditional festivals such as the annual Kwudwegyi Yam Festival, which will take place from 9th to 14th December this year.

Nyau Fraternity

Among the Chewa people of Africa, there exists a secret society known as Nyau. The Chewa people predominantly reside in Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia.

The Nyau fraternity is renowned for their "Gule Wamkulu" (the "Great Dance") of masquerades. These groups perform during special occasions such as festivals, celebrations, and burials, wearing masks and costumes primarily made of banana leaves, straws, or wood.

They are believed to be possessed by the "nyama" (animal spirits) of the masks they wear and the "mizimu" (ancestral spirits).

The costumes and masks vary in type and form, often signifying different ranks or power. Their dance performances convey messages of spiritual, moral, and societal significance to onlookers.
Members of this spiritual society are highly secretive, to the extent that family members may never know if a brother, spouse, or father is a Nyau, as they keep everything hidden from non-initiated individuals. They are sometimes feared by local authorities, community members, and even the police due to their perceived spiritual abilities.
