EXCERPTS FROM PRESIDENT AKUFO-ADDO’S TWELFTH ADRESS TO THE NATION ON MEASURES TAKEN TO CONTAIN COVID-19
DATE: SUNDAY JUNE 21, 2020
1. As of Saturday, June 20, 2020, Ghana’s case count stood at 14,154 positive cases, with 10,473 recoveries and 85 deaths
2. Out of the 3,596 active cases, 24 persons are severely ill, 6 persons critically ill, with 4 persons on ventilators
3. The increment in recoveries is as a result of the implementation of the new WHO guidelines for discharging persons infected with COVID-19
4. The stigma associated with the disease is worrying as it undermines efforts to fight the virus; it accounts for the reluctance of some persons to admit they have tested positive and go into quarantine
5. Persons who test positive for the virus, once they recover, do not pose any danger whatsoever to anyone
6. Government continues to mobilise holding-bay,
quarantine, isolation and treatment centres across the country to provide optical care and reduce COVID-19 related deaths
7. The wearing of masks is mandatory; the police will conduct random checks in the enforcement of this directive
8. Final year senior high school students (SHS 3), and second year Gold Track students are to return to school tomorrow, Monday, June 22, 2020

10. All the 1,167 Senior High Schools in the country have been fumigated and disinfected
11. Each student, teaching and non-teaching staff, invigilator and school administrator, numbering 800,000, will be provided with three pieces of reusable face masks, i.e. two being provided tomorrow, and the third within a fortnight
12. Parents are encouraged to provide their wards and children with at least one (1) face covering on their way to school
13. A total 18,000 Veronica Buckets, 800,000 pieces of 200 ml sanitisers, 36,000 rolls of tissue paper, 36,000 gallons of liquid soap, and 7,200 thermometer guns have been distributed
14. A maximum of 25 students will be permitted in each class; there will be no mass gatherings and sporting activities; religious activities will be permitted under the new protocols
15. All day students in schools with boarding houses will be resident in the boarding houses, while day students in schools without boarding facilities, will commute from home with strict adherence to the safety protocols
16. One dormitory block in each senior high school is to be used as an isolation centre, in the event of a student falling sick; each SHS has been mapped to a health facility
17. Through the National Food and Buffer Stock Company, enough food supplies have been distributed to all schools
18. Government is also making available 350 buses and 840 pickup vehicles to senior high schools that did not receive vehicles in 2016
19. Government will absorb the WASSCE examination fees of the 323,837 students who will sit for the exams; the intervention will cost GH¢75.4 million
20. All are encouraged to adhere to the enhanced hygiene, social distancing, and mask-wearing protocols to prevent the virus from further spreading.
