Hey people, are you still with me? Let’s also give you some useful insights about the process of applying for studies abroad. As you probable already know, it comes with a whole list of documents that you have to submit. Such as the application form, resume, transcript, recommendation letters…etc. Now, make sure that every document is in perfect order. Meaning, the document itself is authentic (written by YOURSELF) and without any typos. It is always good to ask assistance from seniors, especially they ones who went through this process before.

Tomorrow afternoon you will have the opportunity to ask all these questions, when I interview a former student of mine who is NOW doing his Masters in the UK. Tune in here on my Facebook-page.

As a teacher, I am often been asked to write recommendation letters for former students. Note, that I only agree when I actually know you personally and you have worked DIRECTLY under me. If you have just been a student in my class, without participating in the extra activities I have offered you, chances are, I won’t. Because a recommendation letter has to give a personal account of you based on my own experiences with you in the classroom. I don’t do ‘general’ letters in where I just say some nice things about somebody, even though it might not be true. My reputation is also on the line here.

Another tip is that you don’t give up after the first rejection. It could take up to two years before you actually got a successful entry. Doing these applications more than once, can help you to become better in writing application letters. If you really want it and you are PERSISTENT, you will struck gold at some point.

Here’s another good tip for all of you who wants to study abroad: CHOOSE WISELY! A lot of you are looking for opportunities in the US and the UK. Did you know there are thousands of other schools in the Northern part of the world that are welcoming foreign students with open arms? Places such as Norway, Turkey, South Korea, Argentina….etc. They offer a variety of international programs on a quality level. And your chances to get in ARE HIGHER because they are not flooded by applications like the British and American universities.

The key is to look for the course in your FIELD OF INTEREST on websites that collect scholarships, fellowships and grants from different universities and countries. Check out some of them below here. Yes, you have to search and google and keep searching until you find something that SUITS YOU. Don’t just pick a course because you want to go abroad. Pick a course that is in your own area of interest. Remember you will study this for at least 1-2 years on BA or MA level. Therefore you better choose something you REALLY would like to do.

Keep following my page, next week we will interview a former student of mine about his experiences abroad…

This morning I had a great interactive session with some UMAT students in Tarkwa (Ghana). Several questions came up about studying abroad. Before I go into them, hereby some useful links that you would want to check out right away. Especially the last link "What You Need To Know" is a good way to start because it gives you a full list of requirements.

Also, keep in mind that when you apply for studies abroad you really can’t cut any corners. You have to be able to tick every little box that is on the list. Hundreds, maybe thousands of people, are applying for the same scholarship. So only the ones who provide ALL the necessary details and docs will have a chance.

Feel free to comment...

A whole interview changes AFTER broadcasting when the guest speaker has passed on... That’s what happened with this podcast I did with Amanda Doukpola (1996-2023)😢

Back in 2021 she was about to graduate and I spoke with her about the loss of her father AND mother during the lockdown. Her will to succeed in life was high. Who could have predicted she would join her parents two years later?

Listen here to our in-depth conversation about her tears, strength and hopes for the future…

In July 2023 we received the sad and shocking news that our former schoolmate & student Amanda Doukpola has joined her parents in heaven. Our hearts go out t...

As a teacher I used to think that students would come to the radio studio to learn broadcasting skills, but there is another, more important reason why many of them are coming to my class. They are there because they want to boost up their confidence. Public speaking is teaching you to be comfortable in your skin while you are standing in front of a crowd. That is why my workshops are often turned into a therapeutic ground for dealing with stage fright and social anxiety. Listen here to a full recorded session with slides and exercises that you can still do by yourself at home. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i87-ZSNAPxc I also discuss in this workshop the hidden and single most important instrument in public speaking.

Not enough time? Then read this short article on my blog with the four most important take-aways from the workshop Public Speaking I did for the CU Information & Multimedia Ministry on campus. http://liesbeth-tjonameeuw.blogspot.com/2024/01/how-to-be-unique-voice-and-not-echo.html

‘EMPOWER’ has been a buzz word for many years now and especially on this continent. But not everybody understands the mind-set that comes with being confident about yourself. Central University student Daisy Palinwinde Jacobs does an honest attempt in her podcast series ‘I AM EVERY WOMAN’, in where she encourages young ladies to see their inner beauty and accept who they are. One of her best advises: “Learn to be by yourself, because only then you really know who you are.”

Everyone is not headed in the same direction in life. We need to focus on our own life paths without worrying who is taking the lead and who is being left behind. Just keep grinding and working hard and most importantly do things at your own pace so that you can achieve your goals at your own time.....

Enjoy reading stories from young writers like Yewande Omotoso: "Being from many places has a way of tempering all experiences. I have been beautiful in some cities, ugly in others; in a way it’s healthy – at least for the ego – to grow up understanding the balancing powers of context." Yes, context can not be ignored. Perspective determines everything. What is true in one society can be completely different in another environment. Still, a lot of people think there is only one truth when it comes to culture and identity. At the end of the day (or night) we may look at the same moon, but the way it is shaped from my geographic point can be completely different from your geographic point. Understanding one's perspective can give you an unique experience.

Yewande Omotoso’s namesake leads her down some unusual pathways.
