Ghana’s Aviation sector is set to commence domestic flights operations after three weeks of lockdown for passenger flights in the government bid to contain community spread of coronavirus. In this regard, protocols have been developed to guide the operators of domestic flights to contain the coronavirus spread and prevent infection.

The Minister for Aviation, Hon. Joseph Kofi Adda said this during a Virtual Summit that was organized by the International Air Transportation Association (IATA) which is a global trade association of air transport operators.

Speaking in a virtual Regional Air Transport Industry Summit for Africa on Tuesday 21st April, 2020, Mr. Adda mentioned that measures are being introduced to ensure the safety of both passengers and operators when the industry moves back into operation.

“Passenger distancing is being introduced in the sector, where passengers would be made to sit at a safe distance apart and also ensure that all the necessary protocols are observed onboard flight.

Other measures being introduced include the testing of flight crew members before they start operation, as well as fumigation, regular passenger and handling crew sanitization as well as the acquisition of more PPEs for the Port Health officials and ground handling personnel.

The Minister disclosed that Port Health Service Officers would be stationed in all domestic Airports, which formerly didn’t have any. Hon. Adda stressed that the success of the airline transport commencement is based fundamentally on passenger confidence.

“Passengers have to be confident that indeed when they fly, they are safe. So, I think this concern is one that needs to be dealt with quickly,” he said.

The Summit which was aimed at gathering inputs from States Agencies, participating industry stakeholders on the need to ensure a smooth restart as well as recovery of the aviation industry and to also ensure job security for airline staff had ninety-seven (97) participants from thirteen (13) States.

He concluded by asking for a Marshal Plan of some sort for the aviation industry to continue to support the development efforts of nation-states, particularly Africa.

The whole range of industry players ranging from governmental agencies such as Civil Aviation Authorities, Airport Managing Companies as well as auxiliary service providers like freight forwarders and indeed even financing agencies and infrastructural development or construction companies need to be supported.

The Minister said such a comprehensive scheme would help to re-energize the sector to bring the business community, Tourism and even households into mainstream economic development again.

The Minister of Labour in Austria is considering a mask requirement for football to return in the country. This is expected to guarantee the safety of the players amid coronavirus pandemic.

Red Bull Salzburg returned to training this week with Ghana youth international Majeed Ashimeru spotted wearing a face mask.

Samuel Tetteh also returned to training with his Austrian Bundesliga side LASK Linz. In Germany, the Bundesliga has been warned that playing games behind closed doors could pose a public health risk because fans will gather in front of stadiums.

The authorities are looking for a way to resume the 2019-20 campaign despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Exactly 48 years ago, on April 27, 1972, Kwame Nkrumah, the deposed President of Ghana and a great Pan-Africanist died in Bucharest, Romania after six years in exile in Guinea far away from his birthplace of Nkroful at the age of 62. Kwame Nkrumah played a pivotal role in the formation of the African Union (A.U) previously called the Organization of African Unity (O.A.U) and led his country to independence in 1957.

President Kwame Nkrumah was unconstitutionally ousted from office through a military coup. The Coup was launched by the National Liberation council (NLC) with the code name “Operation Cold Chop,” on February 24, 1966 whiles he was in Peking (today’s Beijing) en route to the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi, with plans to end the American war in Vietnam.

Kwame Nkrumah arrived in Conakry, Guinea after being invited by Sekou Toure just after the Military Coup that unconstitutionally ousted his Government from Power.

In distant Bucharest (Romania), April 27, 1972, far from his green and lovely native land and from his own people, Kwame Nkrumah died of cancer.

His death, of cancer, was announced by President Seim Toure of Guinea, one of the militant nationalist’s closest friends. Mr. Nkrumah had been living in Guinea since his overthrow in a military coup in 1966. Several African Heads of State and the representatives of 25 other countries paid their last tributes to Ghana’s former President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, on Saturday, May 13, 1972 after a funeral ceremony in Conakry, the Guinean capital.

Also represented at the funeral ceremony was Ghana’s new ruling military body, the National Redemption Council. But in Accra, there was no word of when Dr. Nkrumah’s body would be flown back for burial — and there were some misgivings that it would not be returned by the Guineans.

The return of his body to Ghana followed lengthy negotiations between Ghana’s military rulers and the government of Guinea. Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, was buried at his home town of Nkroful, 240 on Sunday 9 July, 1972. While the tomb still remains in Nkroful, his remains were transferred to a large national memorial tomb and park in Accra, Ghana.

Today, the place is known as Kwame Nkrumah’s Mausoleum and has become a tourist destination for Ghanaians and those in the diaspora. The idea of erecting a monument in honour of Nkrumah dates back to 1972, when the African Students Union sent a memorandum asking the Government of Guinea, then under President Sekou Toure, to send the mortal remains of the Ghanaian leader to Ghana only if the military leaders at that time denounced coup d’état and re-erected the statue of Nkrumah which was destroyed during the 1966 coup.

Although the remains were later returned to Nkroful, his birthplace, it was not until 1992, that the image of Nkrumah was restored on the Old Polo Grounds during which the erstwhile Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC), decided to build the Kwame NKrumah Mausoleum.

President Nana Akufo-Addo has extended the ban on public gathering including religious activities and funerals by an additional two weeks. He made this known during his eighth televised address to the nation on the outbreak of the novel coronavirus in the country on Sunday, April 26, 2020.

The extension comes into full force on Monday, April 27, 2020, at 1:00 am.

The United States of America (USA) in its quest to help Ghana win the war against the novel Coronavirus, has delivered some improved medical supplies to boost the testing capacity of Ghana. The medical supplies arrived at Kotoka International Airport on Friday, April 24, by a US Air Force C-130J aircraft which flew from 86th Airlift Wing at Ramstein Air Base, Germany.

H.E. Stephanie S. Sullivan, the US ambassador to Ghana stated, the arrival of the needed medical supplies underscores the results of the growing partnership between the United States of America and the Republic of Ghana to combat COVID-19, to save lives and protect the people of this nation.

“As confirmed cases gradually made their way to West Africa and eventually Ghana, these essential laboratory supplies became even more critical during this rapidly evolving crisis and would have remained stranded in Manchester, U.K., until sometime in May if not for the assistance of the U.S. Air Force.

“The United States commends the Government of Ghana for its strong efforts to combat this pandemic, and we are pleased to partner in its leading efforts,” she said.

Brig. General Leo Kosinshi, Director for Logistics, Air Force Command, receiving the supplies on behalf of AFRICOM, said since the emergence of COVID-19 has introduced some new hurdles we have had to consider in U.S. Africa Command’s Area of Responsibility.

“Movement of this shipment of critical medical supplies from the United Kingdom to Ghana represents one of many logistics moves executed recently despite operating in one of the most logistically challenging theaters to move people and material,” he noted. He, however, indicated that “the fact that so many professionals from multiple commands quickly came together to work through this particular requirement highlights our amazing and unique team of professionals. They are working together every day for the interests of the American people and our global partners even in the toughest of circumstances.”

The medical equipment, weighing about 2,500 kilograms, was provided by the US Naval Medical Research Unit Three (NAMRU-3) Ghana Detachment and it includes ribonucleic acid (RNA) extraction kits, reagents, viral collection swabs, universal and viral transport media to collect and store specimen, as well as the replenishment of other consumable lab supplies.

These were ordered in January 2020 to support NAMRU-3 Ghana Detachment research efforts, in partnership with Ghana’s National Influenza Center at the Noguchi Memorial Institute of Medical Research, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, and Kumasi Centre of Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine.

The NAMRU-3 Ghana Detachment is a collaborator within the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Branch Global Emerging Infections Surveillance partner network and has supported influenza surveillance for both human and avian influenza strains in Ghana since 2007.

There was pandemonium in Winneba in the Effutu Constituency of the Central Region when members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) turned the town into a battlefield, attacking one another with offensive weapons. Matters came to a head when some leading figures, believed to have been suspended by the party, went to the constituency office to hold a press conference to inform the national executives about the unfair treatment being meted out to them by the regional executives.

According to them, they were suspended because they opposed the decision by the NDC to acclaim James Kofi Annan as the party’s parliamentary candidate for the 2020 general election.

When the suspended officers got to the party’s office, a number of hoodlums who were allegedly brought in by the party executives lined up at the place with offensive weapons, such as knives, clubs, canes, sticks and stones, and started manhandling them, forcing people around to run for their lives. The Communications Officer of the NDC in the Effutu Constituency, Nenyi Akrama, aka Alexander King Dadzie, who is one of the suspended officers, claimed the attack was orchestrated by one Paa Nii Lamptey, aka Popo, who is a former NDC chairman in the constituency, with tacit support from the party’s acclaimed candidate, James Kofi Annan.

“For quite some time now, there has been unrest in the party here. There are some people who have come to join the party and are fomenting the trouble. There is a key person called James Kofi Annan who is behind all these,” he said. “Recently, we heard that he was acclaimed as our parliamentary candidate to lead the party, but he did not even pass through the right procedure when he was being acclaimed. Looking at what is happening now, if he had gone through vetting there was no way he would have been selected to lead the NDC in Effutu because he does not even qualify,” he added.

“As we speak, he has corrupted some of the executives in the constituency, as well as those in the regional and national headquarters to get this illegal acclamation,” he claimed. Nenyi Akrama said, “I was whipped by the guys who were organized by the former chairman who supports James Kofi Annan. I have also seen a few guys being hit by the same people who were paid to come and beat us even though we have our constitutional rights to speak on the issues affecting the party.”

He said some of the victims were rushed to the Winneba Trauma Hospital and said he was yet to pay them a visit to ascertain the extent of their injuries. He said himself, an aspirant called Henry Kweku Bortey Ghartey aka Dependable, who placed second when the main primary was held, Joseph Wallace aka Big Joe, and one Moro, who is a deputy Treasurer, have been suspended under what he claimed to be ‘unfair circumstances’.

“There are people who have suffered so much for the party, die-hard NDC members; I mean these four key people who have been suspended. They have sacrificed their all to get the party where it is today, and instead of them to be rewarded they rather sacked them by these same people who have been induced to do the bidding of James Kofi Annan,” he pointed out.

“James Kofi Annan is trying to destroy our party and I am calling on the leaders to know the kind of person we are dealing with. He is not in good standing in the party. He has criminal cases against him, and we cannot take risks with the party at this time,” he claimed.

He said “the party set a precedent in Afram Plains where the one who placed second was made as the automatic candidate after the main candidate had been withdrawn on the basis of a fraud case against him,” adding “the best person who should be acclaimed is Henry Kweku Bortey Ghartey or anybody in the party who is in good standing and not somebody like James Kofi Annan who is not in good standing in this constituency.”

Kumawood actress, Benedicta Gafah seems unperturbed by allegations levelled against her by politician and businessman Kennedy Ohene Agyapong. The member of parliament for Assin Central constituency in his latest ‘expose’ slammed Bishop Obinim and disclosed a list of women who have had a sexual encounter with the man of God which includes the actress.

Kennedy’s fresh attack on Obinim was provoked by Florence, who described him as a liar and an adulterous man who has fathered a lot of children outside his marriage.

Appearing on “The Seat” a show on his Net 2 TV station, he went to the extent of dropping names and photos of ladies Bishop Obinim has been sleeping with outside his marriage, to prove that Florence Obinim’s husband does the most when it comes to womanizing.

However, Benedicta seemed unbothered by the accusation. Shortly after Kennedy’s list went viral on social media, Benedicta took to her Instagram to share a video of herself in the kitchen, jamming to Nigerian star Burna Boy’s hit single “Ye”.

She sang to some of the lyrics of the song which suggests that her focus is on creating wealth and living the best life.

Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has warned if Ghanaians flout other measures put in place to stop the spread of the virus and there is a spike of infections, a more draconian measure will be imposed.
President Nana Akufo-Addo on Sunday lifted a three-week partial lockdown imposed in the Greater Accra and Greater Kumasi districts.

Some videos that have emerged on social media show some persons jubilating and dancing in celebration for 'gaining their freedom' after the President's announcement.

Reports gathered by Peace FM correspondents a day after the lifting indicate that large numbers of Ghanaians have flooded town especially the markets.

Unfortunately, most of these people are neither observing the social distancing rule nor wearing masks as directed by the President.
Some pundits have expressed fear that with the lifting of the restriction on movements, there might be community spread.

Speaking to this in an interview on Peace FM's morning show 'Kokrokoo', Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah averred that if people refuse to adhere to other measures including social distancing and there is an increase in infections, a total lockdown, and a curfew will be imposed as the President outlined in his address.

"If we continue adhering to the other measures, we don’t expect a spike of infections. The 14 other regions where there was no lockdown, we didn’t see any spike, but if people keep being stubborn, and there is a spike, a lockdown and a curfew will be imposed," he stated.

Authorities of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly have ordered the closure of the Kumasi Central market hours after President Akufo-Addo ordered the opening of the lockdown areas. According to Ultimate FM’s Isaac Bediako Justice, the closure was necessitated by the refusal of the traders to observe social distancing protocols.

” There are many people at the market, they are not wearing gloves and masks and no social distancing,” Bediako reported from the Central Market monday.

President Akufo-Addo on Sunday announced the lifting the 3-week lockdown on Greater Accra and Kumasi, with effect from Monday, April 20.

Addressing the Nation on Sunday, April 19, 2020, the President, however, stated all other social distancing measures are still in place. Churches, Schools both Public and Private, will still remain shut. According to President, the decision to enforce the 3-week lockdown was taken to give Government the opportunity to try to contain the spread of the virus, scale-up effectively the tracing of persons who had come into contact with infected persons, test them for the virus, and quarantine those who tested positive and isolate them for treatment.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has lifted restrictions imposed on the movement of persons within some parts of Greater Accra, Tema, Kasoa and Greater Kumasi. This decision, the President indicates that is to give government the opportunity to try to contain the spread of the virus, scale-up effectively the tracing of persons who had come into contact with infected persons, test them for the virus, and quarantine those who tested positive and isolate them for treatment.

This was announced by President during his live televised address to the nation today, Sunday, April 19, 2020.

Although the lifting of the restrictions may come as a reprieve to the many whose livelihoods may have been hit hard following the imposition, access to some major sectors remains restricted.

Four major cities, Accra, Tema, Kumasi and Kasoa, had been placed under a three-week lockdown purposely to hold the spread of the Novel Coronavirus. The initial two-week restrictions imposed on these areas saw a further seven days extension as the nation waited for test results from some 14,000 samples taken, the President stated in his last address to the nation.

The country’s borders remain closed.

Meanwhile, the ban on social gatherings, including religious gatherings, schools, as well as the strict adherence social distancing protocol, remain in place.
