US BRIBE SCANDAL; Ghana's Parliament, Government Officials Figured.

The U.S. securities regulator on Monday charged former banker of the US and current MD of Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), Mr. Asante Berko for arranging at least $2.5 million in bribes to be paid to Ghana government officials in order to gain approval for a client’s power plant project.
The bribery scandal occurred mainly between 2015-2016 when Mr. Berko was an employee of Goldman Sachs Group Inc., a bank in the United State.

The Securities and Exchange Commission of the US stated that, Asante Berko arranged the bribes for a Turkish energy company to funnel the money to a Ghana-based intermediary, which then paid the local officials (presumably in Ghana).

"Berko helped the Ghana-based intermediary pay more than $200,000 in bribes to various other government officials, and personally paid more than $60,000 to members of the Ghanaian parliament and other government officials, the SEC statement said, adding that Berko took deliberate measures to prevent his employer from detecting the bribery scheme", this quotation is attributed to The Wall Street Journal, by Reuters.

The case is filed at the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
The US Security Regulator has charged Mr. Berko with violating the anti-bribery provisions of the FCPA and federal securities laws and thus seeking monetary penalties, among other remedies, against him.

QUALITY FOODS SERVED TO THE VULNERABLE - GENDER MINISTER

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection has debunked negative reportage of foods served to the vulnerable during the lockdown period on Monday 13th April, 2020 at the forecourt of the Ministry.

She has assured all that the quality of foods prepared by their caterers are of good quality and that the directors of her Ministry do random sampling of the various foods prepared before serving to the general public.

The Ministry is therefore calling on all to desist from such false rumours and collaborate with them to achieve the needed results.

“Chairperson of the anti-s*xual harassment committee of the University of Ghana (UG), Dr. Margaret Amoakohene has refuted allegations made against some lecturers of the institution cited in the BBC Africa Eye documentary, saying that there is no evidence that shows that they slept with the students to give them better grades.”

PRESS RELEASE

NPP CONDEMNS POLICE BRUTALITY ON DEMONSTRATING LAW STUDENTS

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) condemns the policing measures and consequent incidents that occurred during the demonstration by persons protesting against mass failures in the recent Law School Examinations.

Reports speak of apparent excessive use of force by personnel of the Ghana Police Service against the demonstrators who were harmless and non-violent.

While we accept the position of the Police that the demonstrators may have strayed outside the law, and were disrupting the normal usage of the public thoroughfare that passes in front of Jubilee House, we are, however, not convinced that the Police had to resort to such use of force and crowd controlling techniques to manage a crowd, mainly of students.

The police must realize that, just like every other Ghanaian, they are also subject to law and ought to give confidence to the populace at all times that, in applying the law, they do so fairly to all manner of persons.

In the light of this sad development, the NPP is calling on the police hierarchy to look into the matter and bring persons who are found to have acted unprofessionally to justice to forestall future occurrence of this regrettable incident.

Finally, the party calls on the relevant authorities and State actors to grant a hearing to these students, who, together with many others, have consistently demanded for an immediate reform to legal education in the country, to reflect the realities of the 21st century.

We do empathize deeply with the innocent students who may have suffered any trauma and pray for their speedy recovery.

Prof Gyampo of Legon who was seen in the BBC’s “Sex for Grades” video writes :

Good Afternoon Folks,
1. I have been counseled to be silent on a matter of entrapment masterminded by a certain unscrupulous people, with the aid of BBC (African Eye) against me.

2. Unfortunately, my students this afternoon also insisted that I say something to clear the air. I am grateful to them for the support they showed me this afternoon. I am grateful to all my friends for the numerous phone calls and messages to show solidarity. For my haters who were expecting to see a worst video, and actually texted to rejoice over what they think is going to be my downfall, I forgive them

3. I have a lot to say about this matter. But I am suing the BBC for defamation tomorrow, so I will keep some of the facts to myself for now.

4. Let me state however, that I have not involved myself in the BBC's so-called s*x for grades and will never do so. Their own video documentary evidence could not establish this. I am aware of my University's Sexual Harassment Policy and I have always adhered to its dogmas.

5. The lady involved in my informal conversation, was not my student and she wasnt also a student from the University of Ghana where I teach. I therefore cannot decipher how I could manipulate the grade of a non-student. The BBC ignored all her contributions to our conversation. They ignored all her messages she sent to me. They ignored my objections and letters written to refute their allegations. They also edited the video to suit their purpose.

6. While I prepare to sue the BBC for carrying out the most bogus and unprofessional piece of documentary in the world so far, I wish to remind them that Ghana and for that matter, Africa, has long thrown out the yoke of colonialism.

7. We are an independent continent with our own institutions that can handle internal matters. There cannot be much talk about strengthening institutions when they are blatantly prevented from doing their work by needless intruders like the BBC. The University of Ghana where I teach, has credible outfit and mechanisms for dealing with matters of harassment. Why did the BBC refused to encourage the one harassed to report the matter? Sexual harassment is also a criminal matter. Why has the BBC refused to report the matter?

8. I am aware of those behind this, just for the purposes of gagging me. But I wish to assure them that I remain Yaw Gyampo. I wont be silenced. Their worst may be to kill me. But in as much as I love my family, I wont be scared to die in the course of keeping regimes on their toes, without malice, just for the purposes of shaping our governance landscape.

I have not engaged in any so-called s*x for grades and I will stay true to my calling in doing my best for God, students and country.
