MORATORIUM ON BEACHES ERA WAS HELLISH- REVELERS

Revelers during this Chrismas holidays in Ada describe the period of ban on beach attendance and related gatherings as difficult and trying moments.

Accoding to them, they were whipped by boredom, making living for the period uncomfortable and by far hellish.

As the most preferred tourists destination of the Greater Accra Region, hundreds of revelers keep thronging Ada since last week to have fan to climax their new year holidays in a grand style.

Some are visiting the beautiful scenery of the estuary at Azizanya, while others are jeskying on the Volta Lake as several others are calling at their preferred resorts on the islands to enjoy themselves. Crossing with wooden boats to the islands to them is unforgettable experience amidst strict adherence to safety and COVID-19 protocols.

This year's enjoyment is exceptional due to the inactivity for almost two years as a result of restrictions to contain the spread of the pandemic.

Some of the fan makers were elated at lifting of the interim ban on beaches patronage and recount the harrowing experiences of not getting the opportunity to have fan and destress in the recent past after hard days' work due to the global malaise.

ATINKANEWS met Chef Omar, who tells how he almost lost his job because of the temporary prohibition on patronising such recreational facilities, after several months of inactivity.

A supervisor at the Treasure Island, Charles Bekoe Bruce, has also been speaking about the telling effect of the coronavirus-ochestrated sanction on revelling on his family. Mr. Bruce however sought the opportunity to call on the central government to fix the road network of the area, especially from Kasseh to Azizanya as well as provide potable water to enhace tourism in the area.

GHANA TO FACE POWER CRISIS IF IT FAILS TO BEGIN FOSIL FUEL TO CLEAN ENERGY TRANSITION NOW-AERC

The government of Ghana has been implored to exhibit the political will in formulating a concrete transition plan for fosil fuel to renewable energy mantra.

According to Alliance for Empowering Rural Communities, AERC, a climate and energy research think tank, goverment's failure to take such pragmatic steps immediately will not only plunge Ghana into energy crisis, but also have economic, environmental and social consequences on several communities thereby impoverishing lots of Ghanaians.

The think tank brought this to the fore during a meeting with the press in Tema to unveil a research findings conducted in partnership with AbibiNsroma and Friends of the Earth Ghana.

Countries around the globe have resolved to steadly depart from the use of fosil fuel to renewable energy to reduce the increasing negative impact of thr climate change on lives. Ghana in view of this has laid a roadmap to have ten percent clean energy in the the country's generation mix by 2030.

Coordinator of the Alliance for Empowering Rural Communities, Richard Matey, at the press briefing said studies conducted in Ghana, Togo Nigeria and Uganda have revealed that in spite of the fosil fuel to renewable energy agenda, export credit finance agencies from developed countries are still financing offshore energy projects. This according to him impedes efforts at decreasing the level of pollution impacts on the earth through the exploitation of dirty energy.

Mr. Matey noted that some renewed commitment has however emerged at the just ended Glasgow climate summit where the G-8 have pledged to drastically cut down their fundings to offshore fosil fuel projects by 2022.

Mr. Matey who doubles as the energy focal person for AERC disclosed that if this happens, Ghana will be hit with gas shortage to fuel its thermal plants and as a result experience serious power crisis if fails to begin the transition strategy now.

He therefore called for the political will to act immediately, an investment strategy to drive the clean energy agenda and as well take the necessary energy transition investment approach to clean energy.

The Coordinator of AbibiNstoma Foundation, Robert Amiteye on his part called on MMDAs to embrace the renewable energy agenda and embark on such projects in their jurisdictions as a way of helping to achieve this objective, but in tandem with the national policy.

Other African partners in this research include Environmental Governance Institute, Friends of the Earth Togo, Environmental Rights Action and Friends of the Earth Nigeria

2022 BUDGET INCOMPLETE, BRING ANOTHER BUDGET- DRIVERS TELL GOV'T

Driver unions in the Ashaiman Municipality say the 2022 fiscal year budget is an incomplete one without any touch to the escalating petroleum prices.

They are therefore asking the government to come again with another budget addressing the galloping fuel prices, in case it has escaped them.

Fuel prices have been increase about nine times since the commencement of 2021 thereby shoring up general goods prices. Drivers and commuters in have been decrying to the government to do something about the ever increasing prices of petroleum to ease the untold hardship on the ordinary citizens, a plea which is begging for address.

Secretary to the Ashaiman Traffic Branch of the GPRTU, Samuel Amoah speaking to ATINKANEWS said they are shocked at government's refusal to say a word about the galloping petroleum prices in the 2021 year budget. According to him, they presented a petition of their concerns to the Roads and Highways Minister who assured them that those concerns will be addressed in the budget, an assurance which became fiasco to their dismay.

Mr. Amoah who noted that there has never been a budget in past which refused to touch on fuel as the driver of the economy, saying the 2021 budget is incomplete and called for the actual budget to be presented. He however swiftly added that driver unions at this time are not pushing for any increment on transport fares, but are calling for the removal of five nuisance taxes on petroleum products to mitigate the suffering of Ghanaians.

Some drivers who spoke with ATINKANEWS termed the abolishment of road tolls and refusal to reduce fuel prices as misplaced and insensitive to drivers and Ghanaiansin at large.

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, has taken his strictness and bold approach to work to another level, when he scolded the East Ada DCE, Sarah Dugbakie Pobee, for her arrogance conduct, and asked her to apologise to the people.

In his closing remarks after the nominee was hardly confirmed on Friday October 8, 2021, the minister reprimanded the DCE to amend her ways and stop lording over the people. “I hear you went about begging people for the way you have lived with them for past four years but i have not seen it, i want you to apologise to them again in my presence to prove your sincerity, and not because you want to be approved. You are working for the people and you must to lord over them” he opined.

The regional minister asked the Ada DCE to turn on a new life and see her mandate as DCE as a service to the benefit of the people.

To engender a cordial relations with assembly members for the overall development of the district, Mr. Quartey urged the DCE to be sincere and open to the members.

“Make allocations for Electoral areas development, though funds are scarce relative to development pursuits, use the little in the district’s coffers for your constituents to feel some level of development in their vicinities” he added.

As enjoined by the regional minister, the East Ada DCE who has just had her second term endorsement rendered official apology before the assembly members and the invited public, promising to change her ways for the better.

Sarah Dugbakie Pobee pulled 28 yes out of 39 votes representing 72% of total valid vote cast to begin her second term as the DCE for East Ada.

It would recall the bizarre incident which marred the first confirmation of Miss Pobee when the then Presiding Member together with some assembly members were beaten by members of the the Invincible Forces, counting of ballots distorted resulting in the strange manner she was said to have been approved.

All these occurred in the full glare of tens of police

LUOM PUPILS WALKING KILOMETRES TO ACCESS JHS OVER

The plight of pupils from Luom, a community in the Shai Osudoku District who walk over five kilometers to access Junior High education is eventually over with the construction of a three unit JHS classroom block for the community.

The outgoing District Chief Executive, Daniel Akufo, who inaugurated the new building implored the district assembly to continue with the vision of addressing educational infrastructure in the district.

For many years, the Luom Basic School has been without a Junior High School. As a result, pupils who complete class six had to walk several kilometers to Asutsuare Junction, Agormeda and other far communities to access JHS. The assembly upon several appeals from the community folks has finally completed a three-unit classroom block for use as JHS.

The outgoing District Chief Executive for Shai Osudoku, Daniel Akufo, was happy that his tenure has brought about major educational infrastructure in the district and urged his successors to continue to develop education in the district. The immediate past Shai Osudoku DCE further explains what prompted the building of the JHS classroom block.

The Shai Osudoku District Education Director, Harriet Lomotey, expressed joy about the project, saying the era of overcrowding of classrooms is becoming history. She sought the opportunity to appeal for a library to whip reading interest in students.

Chief of the Luom community, Nene Tettey Kwao I, was full of praise to the DCE and the assembly for sharing in their vision and executing the project which the community initially commenced.

Daniel Akufo however pledged his support for the incoming DCE, and hoped all ongoing projects will be completed.

BEES KILLED ALLEGED MILITARY LAND GUARDS FOR DESTROYING A SHRINE

Alleged military men who had invaded Djorma land near Dodowa were heavily attacked by bees leading to the death of one.

The bees attack residents say, was necessitated by the security men destroying a shrine by grading a piece of land belonging to the indigenes.

A witness, Ladzeh Atiapa, said the armed men besieged their land and begun to encroach without their consent. She narrates that, she was at home the day when the heavily armed uniform men as usual, came onto the land with a bulldozer and a few minutes later rushed a colleague who suddenly fell sick to the Dodowa Government Hospital, leaving their broken down vehicle in her care. Not too long later, they brought the news of their colleague's death on arrival at the hospital.

Lardzeh stated that though she had problem with walking, she managed to visit the land in question only to find out that her Mango farm and their shrine were all destroyed with bulldozer to her dismay. The soldiers, she further noted returned the next morning to take away their vehicle, as she recounts how the supposed military men have been terrorising them on their own land.

A leading member of the community, Isaac Teye, who gave an account of their ordeal in the hands of the security men over the years recalled how the Sota chief and three elders were killed on their way to Afienya, and the findings.

He therefore called on the government and the hierarchy of the Ghana Armed Forces to probe the incident and bring the perpetrators to book accordingly.

WE SHALL FORBID A NON-INDIGENE ACCESSIBILITY-TTC TELLS GOV'T

The Tema Traditional Council says it will forbid non-indigenes appointed to the MMDCE positions in Tema access to the traditional council. The stance also involves Ashaiman which is a division under the Tema Traditional Council.

This was disclosed at a presser at Manhean after council members claim a bird whispered to them that appointing authorities seek to appoint a non-indigene as a Mayor of the Tema Metro, in spite of several indigenes in the contest.

The Ashaiman Divisional Council led by the Recent, Nii Annan Adjor earlier made it clear that they will only support an indigene as ASHMA boss.

Shipi for the Tema Traditional Council who doubles as Stool Secretary, Nii Armarh Somponu speaking at the press conference recounts how they struggled with the previous regime in 2016 for an indigene to be appointed as Mayor, a development which is insulting to them as though they have no qualified native to man the position. "According to him, there are other indigenous aspirants and therefore will not understand why all of them would be sidestepped for a non-indigene when virtual all the coastal areas enjoy this right leaving out Tema alone.

"We shall not recognise that Mayor, so he or she will not step foot here in that capacity, we shall not tolerate that person. And in that case, we are prepared to even lay down our lives because it appears we are losing our sovereignty and we shall defend it till we are all dead" Nii Shipi accentuates.

The Tema Stool Secretary went on to cite MMDAs from Ada to Teshie where Indigenes are the most preferred choices, saying even though Tema is cosmopolitan, it does not bury the fact that there are primary owners who must be considered in such circumstances, given Tema's contribution to Ghana's development.

He sent a message to the central government that, the Tema Traditional Council still stands by the 2016 position and if it appoints a non-indigene.....

INDUSTRIES IN TEMA TO GET A DEDICATED WATER SERVICE CENTRE-MD HINTS

The Ghana Water Company Limited, GWCL, has commenced processes to provide a separate production centre for the industries in the Tema Industrial Area.

According to the Managing Director of the company, Dr. Engineer Clifford Braimah, the step is underpinned by the growing water consumption from industries at the free zones enclave of the industrial and port city of Ghana. He made the disclosure at a stakeholders engagement with their key customers in Tema.

The key customers stakeholders engagement, the first of its nature sought to solicit concerns from customers to enable the service provider know its shortfall and fine tune its operation for efficient service delivery.

Among the concerns customers raised at the meeting were erratic water supply compelling customers to engage water tanker service providers thereby incurring huge water costs each month, non-reflection of paid bills resulting in unwarranted disconnection, issue of water quality, communication gap in case of maintenance works and lack of customers knowledge about metre calibration to avoid shortchanging.

Dr. Engineer Clifford Braimah who disclosed that, GWCL is in talks with the Danish Ambassador for funds facilitation from DANEDA said, feasibility studies have begun to know the water consumption quantum of industries and plan towards their expansion for the next 50 years. This he pointed will be taken from Battor Aveyime through Sege, Dawa to the industrial area, reserving the main Kpong-Tema line largely for domestic use.

Aside from the above long term measure, Dr. Ing. Braimah also stated that the company in the interim will rearrange its supply pattern to ensure that it continually serves industries and domestic users as a short term step, acknowledging that there is no period of sleep for both industry and domestic users.

*TEMA FISHER FOLKS UNHAPPY WITH 2021 PRE-CLOSE SEASON PREPARATION*

Fishermen at the Tema Canoe Basin commence the 2021 close season with resentment and dissatisfaction regarding arrangements.

The one month moratorium on fishing activities commence today July 1, until August 1, 2021.

The maiden close season which was done in 2019 generated lots of furore resulting in a couple of commencement postponements in but was observed eventually. Major among the fishermen's concerns was an arrangement by the sector ministry to support them during the one month duration of inactivity which the ministry noted and promised consider.

The season could not be observed last year due to the coronavirus pandemic emergency.

This year's close seems to have caught the fisher folks unaware due the break last and the negative impact of the COVID-19 malaise. A visit to the basin Wednesday to find out about preparations met majority of the fishermen getting their nets and other fishing gears ready to take home, with the women sitting with dejection and annoyance all over their faces.

Nii Adjeieterh Mator, the Ashamang Chief Fisherman speaking to newsmen said, the ministry did not make any provision to cushion them for the one month period as promised after the maiden season. Nii Mator who noted that they did not experience any change after observing the first close season in 2019, raised a concern about poaching by the Chinese fishers.

The Chief Fisherman was unhappy that the Tuna canoes have been given 3 to 4 months to observe the close season while China trawlers, the very people depleting the fish stock in Ghana's waters are doing only two months.

This to him constitutes unfairness to the artizanal fishermen.

Some fishermen expressed dissatisfaction at government's inability to institute some financial measures to mitigate their suffering over the one month period, adding that this will escalate thievery.

The fishmongers also call for the close season to be observed in May.

ADA: FARMERS IN LIMBO OVER NO HARVEST FOR FIRST CROP SEASON

Farmers in Ada have their faith in the balance due to their crops dying as a result of the erratic rainfall pattern since the beginning of this year.

The despondent farmers who should round up their first harvest at this time of the year and get ready for second planting are currently in a fix for lack of funds to plough even at the emergence of a couple of rains as a result of their investments going down the drain.

East and West Ada are the most among the three major farming districts in the Greater Accra Region, producing greater percentage of vegetables on the markets in Tema, Ashaiman and parts of Accra.

About 85 percent of the population is into farming as their sole means of income.

Even though those in East Ada largely do irrigation enabling them to do all year round farming, they have been greatly affected by this year's delayed rains.

Atinka News' Edward Graham Sebbie meets with Ernest Joe Agidi, Vice Chairman of the Angorsikorpe Irrigation Farmers Association during a visit to the area. He narrates how his over 20 thousand Cedis went down the drain after his two and half tomato farm went bad for lack of rain. He said, the unpredicted weather pattern coupled with ECG disconnecting electricity source to their irrigation pump plant due to their indebtedness to the company to the tune of over 200 thousand Cedis are the sole contributive factors to their present predicament.

Not only did their watermelon, tomato, Okro etc died on the farms, their seedlings also got burnt due to overgrowing as a result of overstaying on the beds. He says though they have been provided with solar power and are now pumping water, it is too late since they have already lost their investment capitals including nursed seedlings.

The situation Mr. Agidi noted, has left the farmers with no funds to do another ploughing, buy seeds and cultivate even at the last two downpours.

*ADA DCE STOPS ARREST OF NPP GUYS WHO ASSAULTED POLICE COMMANDER*

The caretaker District Chief Executive for East Ada, Sarah Dugbakie Pobee is preventing the Ada Police from arresting four NPP guys for assaulting the Ada District Police Commander last week Sunday for confronting them over violation of road traffic regulations.

Wisdom and Richard Agorhom, both brothers to the Greater Accra Regional NPP Chairman, Divine Otoo Agorhom, and two ladies believed to be their wives onboard a car stopped in the middle of the road at the Clinic junction-Police junction stretch of the Ada-Foah road and were conversing with occupants of an oncoming vehicle resulting in double packing which made it impossible for vehicles from both directions to access the road.

The East Ada District Police Commander, Andreas Mifetu who confirmed the incident but declined to further comment was using same road at the time but could not have access to pass. He questioned them for blocking passage which violates an aspect of the road traffic regulation. The *quadruo* flired up and subjected the commander to verbal and physical assault.

It took some Okada guys who witnessed the unfortunate incident to inform personnel at the Ada-Foah barracks who rushed to the scene by which time the culprits had fled.

Independent investigation reveals that all attempts by the command to arrest the perpetrators to face the law for abusing a law enforcement officer were allegedly thwarted by Madam Pobee who in a telephone call instructed the commander not to arrest the people because they are not criminals. The acting DCE allegedly went ahead to threaten the owner of a guest where the guys lodged when they realised that the police were searching for them.

This is one out of many abuses DSP Mifetu is suffering since his assumed post as the Ada District Police Commander *two years ago*

The National Population Council (NPC) has underscored the need for a concerted effort to deal with the alarming rate of teenage pregnancy in Ghana.

Official reports from the state agency indicates that about 3,000 teenage pregnancy cases were recorded in minors between the ages of 10-14 years, whilst a total of 10,000 cases were recorded amongst teenage girls between the ages of 15-19 in 2020 alone.

In a quest to fashion out means of tackling the worrying development, the National Population Council held a two -day stakeholders dialogue on Adolescent Reproductive Health summit.

The Executive Director of the National Population Council, Dr. Leticia Appiah in her opening address called for an enhanced approach in dealing with the situation which has been given a little attention yet is affront to Ghana's progress.

She said the adolescent bracket sits at an important position in the national development and therefore must be given attention and guided socially.

Dr. Appiah also hammered the importance of prioritizing the girl child’s reproductive health in order to bring forth a healthy and productive budding generation. She mentioned the distribution of sanitary pads to young females, vaccination among others as some interventions to deal with the subject.

The Country Representative for UNFPA, Niyi Ojualape, called for the prosecution of perpetrators of sexual activities with minors across the country as one surest step of discouraging the act. Mr. Ojualape argued that the teenage pregnancy crisis in Ghana has the tendency to thwart the development of the country.

WE NEED MONEY, BUT DISCONNECTION IS NOT OUR PRIORITY-ECG IMPLORES PUBLIC

The General Secretary for Public Utility Workers Union, PUWU, of the TUC, Lawyer Michael Adumata Nyantekyi says the Electricity Company of Ghana, ECG, does not delight in disconnecting customers as perceives by the public.

According to him, though the ECG needs funds to run the company effectively, it derives no revenue from disconnecting customers and therefore cannot priority such an exercise. He made the assertion when the Tema Regional office of the ECG launched Senior and Junior Staff Union celebration in Tema.

The one week long celebration on theme "Economic recovery in the era of COVID-19, role of social partners" is a departure from the usual annual May Day observance. It seeks to whip up the workers' sense of patriotism and hard work in the discharge of their duties to stimulate operations of the company.

Integral of the celebration is a two-day revenue mobilisation exercise where workers will touch base with customers to engender customer care relations, aimed at kindling the willingness of consumers to pay their bills to enable the company provide an enhanced service to Ghanaians.

Lawyer Michael Adumata Nyantekyi noted that, disconnection comes to many people's minds anytime ECG announces a revenue mobilisation exercise, saying the notion is unhealthy since the utility company gets no money from it and wishes that consumers stay connected and honour their bills.

The PUWU General Secretary lauded the celebration, the core exercise of which will afford customers the opportunity to interact with workers to breach the gap between them, and ultimately help to enhance evenue accrual as always the case.

In order to achieve the goal of recovery as stated in the theme, Lawyer Nyantekyi charged the ECG workers to employ innovation and dynamism in the discharge of their assigned roles.
