Attempted su***de has been approved by the parliament of Ghana, as no longer a criminal offense. This means that individuals who attempt to commit su***de (trying to take their own life) or are su***de survivors will now be regarded as needing mental health support rather than facing imprisonment or fine under the law. It's really a public health threat that must be taken seriously.
Until March 28, 2023, attempted su***de was still considered a criminal offense under the original criminal offenses act, Act 1960 (Act 29), which was amended in 2012 (Amendment Act 849), Section 57 (2).
In Ghana, the crime statistics annual report for 2016 (to put the issue in context due to a lack of recent data) recorded 43 attempted su***des, according to the criminal investigation department of the Ghana police. A total number of 21 persons were charged with nonfatal suicidal behavior (Adinkra, 2013)
In their 2022 research, Quarshie, E. N.-B and colleagues presented that about 1,993 individuals (representing 177 females and 1816 males) commit su***de annually across Ghana.

For this reason, among others, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the director general of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has proclaimed a national emergency regarding skin bleaching in Nigeria.
Skin lighting otherwise modernly referred to as skin toning continues to increase and seems to remain a major health hazard in some parts of Africa [...]
