Last night was the awards ceremony to celebrate and reward incredible filmmakers, content creators and creatives for their amazing works to climax this years Black Star International Film Festival at the Holiday Inn Hotel, Accra. Among the many awards on the night includes the People Choice Award sponsored by Wi-flix went to Saving Chris Directed by Eddie Nartey. Congratulations to all winners on the night for your incredible work of art.

Yesterday, Wi-FlixGhana joined other filmmakers, content curators, creatives and industry players at the Black Star International Film Festival Industry Summit held at the British Council Gardens in Accra where Bryte Yeboah, Co-Founder&President at Wi-flix gave the keynote address and also sat through on an exciting and insightful panel discussing Tech in Film and the future of streaming and content monetization.

Here are a few takeaways from the Keynote address and the panel discussion:

- The film industry is undergoing a rapid transformation and disruption, which offers a great opportunity for African creatives to rethink their approach to content monetization.

- Currently, only 3.9% of Africans have access to quality entertainment either on mobile or living room devices. Only 1% of African premium content ends up on big distribution and monetization platforms.

- The time has come to change the narrative, tell the indigenous African stories, the African way, and democratize content for the continent. By doing so, African filmmakers will have access to major distribution platforms and reach a wider audience.

- We need to deliberately empower curators and filmmakers to attract the necessary funding/investment to improve their craft and be competitive on the global stage.

- Wi-flix presents filmmakers and content curators the platform to monetize their content in a fair and localized way and ultimately build a vibrant creative community.

Some amazing short films, such as Save Chris Otukonor, Black Savior, Moon Over Aburi, and many others were screened for patron’s viewing.

African OTT: Wi-Flix’s challenge to Showmax and Netflix

OTT video adoption in sub-Saharan Africa continues to grow at an impressive rate, with subscriptions reaching almost 4.5m and revenue growing to $294m in 2022. Showmax and Netflix are the region’s standout market leaders for now, but Omdia is monitoring some new fast-growing players, such as Wi-flix, which are looking to capture their own share of the African streaming opportunity.
Wi-flix has experienced considerable growth in the past few years, with an active customer base of 972,000 paying subscribers, with 90% based in sub- Saharan Africa and 10% coming from the diaspora. Subscription revenue grew by over one thousand percent between 2021 and 2022, with the company claiming a paid customer retention rate of 75%.
