Kigali does it again! Jogging lanes alongside sub-urban roads in recognition that exercise for health has become an integral part of life. Now this is an excellent use of taxes.

Do you know that Barcelona's city planning was designed and built in 1859 by urban planner & engineer, Ildefons Cerdà in a perfect grid🤩. It facilitates air flow throughout the streets, while maximizes sunshine and daylight entering shops and apartments on the lower floors.🥳😍

Baker Street Station then and now 🕰️

The world's first underground station is widely regarded to be London's "Baker Street Station," which was opened on January 10, 1863, as part of the Metropolitan Railway, the world's first underground railway.
Here are some quirky historical facts about Baker Street Station:

1️⃣Reused Tunnels: The construction of Baker Street Station made use of existing tunnels that were originally intended for a different purpose – a never-completed railway project called the "Metropolitan Inner Circle." The station was built inside one of these abandoned tunnels.
2️⃣Steam Power: The trains that initially ran through Baker Street Station were powered by steam engines. This led to some rather quirky scenarios, such as the station's platforms becoming quite smoky and soot-covered due to the steam locomotives.
3️⃣Unusual Entrance Building: The original entrance building of Baker Street Station had a unique design. It was a beautiful, cast-iron structure with an elaborate arch, designed by architect John Fowler. However, it was later replaced in 1905 with a more conventional building due to concerns about congestion.
4️⃣Sherlock Holmes Connection: Baker Street Station is located on Baker Street, which is famous for being the fictional residence of the renowned detective Sherlock Holmes, created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. As a nod to this literary connection, the station features several Sherlock Holmes-related decorations and references.
5️⃣First Escalator: While not originally part of the station, the nearby station at King's Cross on the Piccadilly Line became home to the world's first-ever escalator in 1911. It was a technological marvel and a novelty at the time, though it wasn't until the 1920s that Baker Street Station itself got its first escalator.
Lost River: During construction, workers discovered a submerged river, the River Tyburn, beneath Baker Street. It was diverted and used as part of the sewer system. Today, the river still flows under the station but hidden from public view.

Before New Yorkers had air conditioning, “city in summer floated in a daze that moved otherwise sensible people to repeat endlessly the brainless greeting ‘Hot enough for ya? Ha-ha!’ ” Arthur Miller wrote, in 1998. During a particularly hot September in the late 1920s, “every window in New York was open, and on the streets venders manning little carts chopped ice and sprinkled colored sugar over mounds of it for a couple of pennies,” Miller remembers. Revisit his reflection on sweaty New York summers and his first “direct contact” with an air-conditioner, in the 1960s: http://nyer.cm/JT1gU80

Car-free shopping streets swept many U.S. cities in the 1960s and ’70s, but few examples survived. Those that did could be models for today’s “open streets.”

WWII broke the back of the European Empires, and the dominos began to fall across the imperial spectrum in 1947, soon after India achieved its independence. The Suez Crisis of 1956 tended to confirm the new status of Britain and France in a post-War world, and shock of it gave the rapidly proliferat...

FROM THE DESK OF THE EDITOR

Welcome to Empowering Good Governance Magazine; a.k.a. Egg Magazine for short.

Egg Magazine is a literary magazine about how we govern ourselves and a trade publication about international development policy and practice.

Governance as practiced by government, civil society and entrepreneurial/corporate entities interests us. How the ‘public citizen’ participates and contributes to this practice concerns us as well. Intergovernmental relations between and amongst branches of government as well as between governmental parties on the international stage are also under the purview of Egg Magazine.
