Train up a child in a way he should grow. spare the rod and spoil the child
These days when parents come complaining to me about their children's behaviour at home, I just listen, smile and sometimes shake my head. I've lost interest.
It was something I used to look forward to after every PTA meeting when I first got into teaching. Out of every 4 parents you talk to, 3 of them have something to complain about. One says "my son does not show me any respect at home." Another says, "Teacher this girl will kill me oo. I always have to leave the door open because she returns from town after 10pm." And then the requests would follow, "Sir please cane him for me." "Sir punish him severely. He is 'spoiling'.
One day, Pearl came to school at 9:00am. At the time, the first lesson starts at 6:30am. I was furious. She said her dad caused it because he gave her some work to do at home which delayed her. I didn't believe the story so I called her dad to confirm. He picked up the call, I greeted, introduced myself and told him why I called.
He said, "Oh teacher, you force paaa say you call me today. Pearl er, it is my daughter, beat am". I was like, "I see" . He continued, " Mesef I no see am today. E no dey respect 1 sef like this for this house. Sir, I said it is my own daughter. Beat am la". I just hanged up.
But why can't they do the beating themselves? Why do they always push this responsibility to the teacher?
When I was in my early teens, we didn't have electricity in my area so the town was very quiet in the evenings. We used to have what we called "jams" almost every weekend. You could hear the loud music wherever you were in the town. The venue was about 20 minutes walk from our house. When it starts, you'll hear;
Eeii Alhaji Alhaji
Guguguuruguruguruguru
Within minutes, my brother, Joshua and I will sneak out of the house to join our friends at the place. The jams could go on till dawn. And we also stayed to watch all the performances.
My mother didn't like it. She feared something bad might happen to us as we walked back in the darkn
