Victor Osimhen crowned African Footballer of the Year

'It's a dream come true for me. I want to thank everyone who has seen me through life's journey,' says Napoli player

Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen won the men's African Footballer of the Year award on Monday.

"It's a dream come true for me. I want to thank everyone who has seen me through life's journey, in achieving my dreams, in achieving my goals," Osimhen said at the ceremony, which was held at the Palais des Congres in Marrakech, Morocco.

"The Nigerian Prince becomes King! Victor Osimhen is the 2023 Men's Player of the Year!" the Confederation of African Football (CAF) said on X.

Osimhen, 24, helped Napoli bag their first league title in 33 years, scoring 26 Serie A goals in 2022-23.

Barcelona's Nigerian player Asisat Oshoala was named CAF's Women's Player of the Year.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink fires warning to Chelsea over Victor Osimhen transfer after Manchester United defeat

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has warned Chelsea that they could upset the balance of the dressing room if they sign victor osimhen or Ivan Toney in the January transfer window.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side were made to pay for their missed chances at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening as Manchester United sealed a 2-1 victory.

Chelsea’s top scorer in the Premier League this season is Nicolas Jackson, whose six goals include a hat-trick against nine-man Tottenham last month.

Chelsea have been heavily linked with a move for a new striker in the upcoming transfer window, with reports claiming that Napoli’s Osimhen is their top target.

However, Hasselbaink, who scored 87 goals in four seasons at Chelsea, believes his former club need to think carefully about bolstering Pochettino’s attacking options in January.

‘Chelsea are not scared of the transfer fee,’ Hasselbaink said on Amazon Prime.

But if you go back into the window and bring in another striker, I don’t think this is the right thing to do for the dressing room, you are going to get an overcrowded dressing room again.

‘You have three strikers already, or someone has to go if you bring in an Osimhen or Toney. This market in January is the hardest to do business.’

Asked if he believes Chelsea are good enough to finish in the top four with their current options up front, Hasselbaink replied: ‘They are not good enough yet to go in the top four. I don’t think they will make the top four.

‘But [Christopher] Nkunku is going to come back, they have a few other injuries but I’m just worried about the dynamics in the dressing room. I think that is more important.

‘Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of young players, it’s still a process but I expected a lot more today.’

Declan Rice stoppage-time winner gives them win in seven-goal thriller

Arsenal's camp could barely hide their delight after securing a dramatic late victory over Luton Town.

The Gunners played out a seven-goal thriller as Declan Rice's header in the seventh minute of stoppage time earned them a 4-3 victory at Kenilworth Road.

That win put Mikel Arteta's side five points clear at the top of the Premier League, meaning that rivals Liverpool and Manchester City won't be able to catch them this gameweek, despite both still being yet to play.

Arsenal were far from their best against the Hatters, but securing a valuable three points when a draw seemed likely will be a major, major boost to their Premier League title hopes.

As you'd expect, Rice's goal sparked wild scenes of celebration both on and off the pitch.

After his header found the back of the net, Rice made his way to the visiting supporters and was swamped by his teammates on the pitch and several of Arsenal's substitutes who joined in the celebrations.

Arteta and his coaching team struggled to hide their delight on the touchline too, pumping their fists and encroaching on the pitch as they celebrated the match-winning header.

Those celebrations then continued after the match as the Arsenal players continued to share the moment with their supporters, with Rice throwing his shirt to one lucky supporter in the crowd.

Arteta then revealed that the players were jumping around in the dressing room as they revelled in what could be a crucial victory in their aspirations to win the Premier League title this term.

After falling short to Man City last term, the hope for Arteta will be that his squad are better-equipped to last the pace this time around.

Based on the celebrations at the end, players and fans alike will be hoping that they have what it takes to go all the way.

Lionel Messi has lifted the lid on the options he had before joining Inter Miami, including a sensational move to the Saudi Pro League.

Messi left Paris Saint-Germain in the summer to sign for David Beckham's Inter Miami over the summer where he helped inspired them to their first ever piece of silverware.

The recently crowned eight-time Ballon d'Or winner had plenty of options on the table before choosing the MLS, though.

Speaking in an interview with TIME, Messi revealed he considered returning to his former club Barcelona, as well as joining long-term rival Cristiano Ronaldo in the Saudi Pro League

However, the World Cup winner claimed that the division isn't yet "an important league," but had the "power" to become one "in the near future".

“The truth is that fortunately, I had several options on the table that were interesting, and I had to analyse them and think, even weigh them up with my family, before making the final decision to come to Miami,” Messi said.

“My first option was to return to Barcelona, but it was not possible,” Messi says. “I tried to return, and it did not happen.” Saudi Arabia, indeed, was very much in the mix.

“It is also true that later I was thinking a lot about going to the Saudi league, where I know the country and they have created a very powerful competition that can become an important league in the near future,” Messi says.

“As the country’s tourism ambassador, it was a destination that attracted me, especially because I’ve enjoyed everything I have visited, because of how football is growing in the country and because of the effort they are putting into creating a top competition.”

Messi also named the MLS as a "minor league" in a recent interview.

His comments follow that of Ronaldo in July, when he claimed that that the Saudi Pro League is "better" than the MLS and would soon surpass the Turkish Super Lig and Eredivisie

Guardiola: ‘We are going to win the Premier League’

Pep Guardiola has said he is confident that Manchester City ‘are going to win the Premier League’ this season.

The champions have dropped to third in the table after three consecutive Premier League draws, having conceded a last-minute equaliser against Tottenham on Sunday. The Citizens travel to take on an in-form Aston Villa team on Wednesday evening, looking to improve their title credentials.

City have won five of the past six titles and are targeting an unprecedented four-in-a-row in England’s top division this season.

Despite their recent dropped points, Guardiola has backed his players to end the season as champions again.

“I never use these situations – the motivation is just to try to do better, that is it,” Guardiola said at his pre-game press conference, when asked if recent results were added motivation for his team.

“I have learned that if you want to win something, you have to do it much better than your opponents. When you are level, that is not always going to happen (winning) so you have to do it much, much better – and this is what they have to do.

“My feeling today is we are going to win the Premier League – if we play at the levels we did against Liverpool and Tottenham, we are going to win it again.

Osimhen wins Serie A Player of Year Award

NAPOLI 's striker, Victor Osimhen, won the Best Player for the 2022/23 Serie A season award at the Gran Gala Del Calcio held in Milan on Monday night.

The 24-year-old Nigerian striker was presented with the award for Best Player of the season by the Italian Footballers' Association (AIC) after his contribution saw Napoli win the Italian League last summer.

Recall that controversy was sparked when the player was not named Serie A MVP for the 2022/23 season as it was instead given to his Napoli teammate Kvicha Kvaratskhelia, while he won the Striker of the Year award.

Osimhen has rightfully won the award this time as presented by the Italian Footballers Association, AIC, after finishing the 2022/23 season as the top scorer in Serie A with 26 goals, becoming the first-ever African Capocannoniere.

Meanwhile, Kvicha Kvaratskhelia, who was named Serie A MVP for the 2022/23 season, did not leave the event empty-handed as he also won the 2022/23 Goal of the Season Award for his run and finish against Atalanta.

David De Gea could make shock Premier League return amid Andre Onana struggles

David De Gea could make a surprise Premier League return months after leaving Manchester United, it has been claimed.

According to the Mail, Newcastle are considering their options, including a possible move for free agent De Gea, as they await the results of scans on Nick Pope’s shoulder injury.

Pope was forced off late on in Newcastle’s 1-0 win over Manchester United on Saturday, suffering a repeat of the dislocated shoulder problem he endured while at Burnley.

The shot-stopper is facing a lengthy spell out, with the publication claiming an operation is considered the most likely course of action at present amid an expected absence of around four to five months.

The last time Pope suffered the same injury, he was out for five months between July 2018 and January 2019.

While Newcastle are reportedly hopeful De Gea's recovery time will not be quite as long, the are already said to be looking at alternatives to the England international in the January transfer window.

Mail Sport have claimed De Gea is one potential option Newcastle have looked at.

The Spaniard, who was the recipient of last season's Golden Glove, left United in the summer after 12 years at Old Trafford.

He has been a free agent ever since, but been tentatively linked to a United return as his replacement Andre Onana continues to struggle with the pressure of the No.1 shirt.

Though De Gea was believed to be on £375,000-per-week during his final contract at United, he would likely have to accept lower to fit in with their wage structure on Tyneside.

Former Newcastle No.1 Martin Dubravka came on to replace Pope against United, where he spent a brief time on loan last season.

Dubravka helped Newcastle preserve their 1-0 lead and pile further pressure on Erik Ten Hag’s side.

Newcastle also have former Liverpool goalie Loris Karius among the ranks.

CHELSEA fans reckon they’re suffering from a cursed captain’s armband.

That’s after “brainless” Conor Gallagher became the latest Blues skipper to see red this season.

The England midfielder was sent for an early bath in Sunday’s 3-2 win against Brighton.

Chelsea cruised into a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Enzo Fernandez and Levi Colwill.

But Brighton pulled one back before half-time through Facundo Bounanotte.

And moments later, Gallagher was given a second yellow card for a reckless foul to leave Chelsea’s hopes of victory hanging by a thread

The Stamford Bridge crowd groaned as stand-in captain Gallagher trudged off the field, leaving his side with a monumental second-half job.

And Chelsea fans reckon the captaincy is cursed after permanent skipper Reece James was sent off in last weekend’s 4-1 defeat to Newcastle.

He has also suffered fresh injury problems ever since replacing Cesar Azpilicueta as Chelsea’s go-to leader.

And vice-skipper Ben Chilwell is also a long-term casualty, leading some fans to believe their armband is bringing bad luck to the Bridge.

One said: “Is the captain armband now a curse?”

Another declared: “The captain curse since Azpilicueta strikes.”

One noted: “Being a Chelsea captain is now a curse, you’re either injured or sent off.”

Another added: “Curse of the Chelsea captain!”

But some fans reckoned Gallagher’s exit was purely down to his reckless actions, with one saying: “What a brainless tackle.”

Another declared: “Why pick up the yellows when we were two goals up, totally uncalled for.”

One noted: “That had to be the most brain dead thing to do leading a game.

Another added: “No way Gallagher pulled a shocked face for his second yellow.”

Luckily for Gallagher, Chelsea held firm early in the second half and even bagged a third goal, with Fernandez netting another strike through a penalty.
