TODAY’S REFLECTION

The offerings we bring to the altar of God are not as important as the loving relationship God wants us to have with our neighbour. There would be no need to bring our offerings to the altar if we do not strive for peaceful co-existence in our communities. The gospel reading calls upon us to practice forgiveness and reconciliation. Anger is one of the seven capital sins. We must not allow the sunset to see us still angry. We should pursue peace with all men and the spirits of holiness, too, without which no eye shall see the Lord. The love of God was revealed to Ahab and to entire Israel through the prophet Elijah at whose word Yahweh sent down rain upon the land after the heavens had been shut for three years. On the good and bad alike, God sends his rain. Our love and reconciliation should extend to our enemies as well.

TODAY’S REFLECTION

Barnabas was a man with a helpful and an optimistic nature. It was a special of the aforementioned description of him that he was given the name Barnabas after his conversion which means ‘son of consolation.’ In the first reading we see the missionary work of Barnabas in Antioch and his later collaboration with Paul bore such great fruit that believers were first called Christian following their mission work. Beyond doubt, the fruit of Barnabas’ work through the instrumentally of the Holy Spirit accentuates that he was truly a good man, full of the Holy Spirit of faith. Indeed, the life and missionary work of Barnabas shows a total dedication to the mission command of Jesus Christ as visible in the gospel. According to tradition, Barnabas suffered martyrdom in Cyprus on account of Christ and his Church.

TODAY’S REFLECTION

If we love God, we will make efforts to keep His commandments. The devil strives to make believers do things that are contrary to God’s will so as to put in them hatred and disloyalty to God. In the first reading, we read of how Adam attempted to hide himself from the presence of God having offended God’s will. Original Sin per se soured humanity’s relationship with God. However, God’s boundless love announced in the Garden of Eden the redemption of the world through the seed of the woman who crushed the head of the serpent. It therefore hurts that the scribes who came from Jerusalem said Jesus casts out demons by the prince of demons. They refused to acknowledge the power of God over Satan and that explains their sin against the Holy Spirit as evidence by the gospel reading of today. Believers should take to heart the words of Saint Paul in the Second Reading by not allowing themselves to be governed by the passing things of earth but by the eternal things of heaven.

TODAY’S RELECTION

The heart is the central organ of human life. The heart pumps blood to all parts of the human body through the blood vessels to make existence possible. Today, we celebrate the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus pierced for our new birth in God. The solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is the celebration of God’s love par excellence. The unending love with which Ephraim was loved by God and the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God, opens for us the treasure of the Sacred Heart of Jesus as it is the heart that was given up for the whole world out of love. In the Sacred Heart of Jesus is the merciful face of God. The church was born from the Sacred Heart of Jesus and on the Sacred Heart of Jesus does the Church fix her gaze.

TODAY’S REFLECTION

Jesus Christ is the word of God and we ought to freely and lovingly welcome him into our lives. The love and cares for the world and the things therein can make the Christian’s response to the love of God grow cold. In the parable of Jesus to the scribes and elders, the tenants were so hard-hearted that they weren’t grateful to the vineyard owner as evidenced by their wickedness towards his servants and the son and their refusing the vineyard owner what naturally belongs to him. Following the advice of Saint Peter, we should always let God reign supreme in our lives by being docile to the promptings of his spirit in us.

TODAY’S REFLECTION

We often make efforts to ensure the building of our physical bodies without the building of our faith in Christ Jesus. Faith building is essential for our salvation in Christ Jesus as its importance goes beyond our physical existence. It would be a risky venture to embark on the work of evangelization for the salvation of souls if one’s faith is not well founded on Christ the solid rock. One cannot give what one does not have. The believer also needs to apply prudence while carrying out the work of evangelization lest he/she loses the light of God if his or her garment is spotted by the world. Jesus showed us the importance of applying prudence in the work of evangelization. Prudence built on faith puts the believer ahead of the unbeliever and prevents the believer from being trapped by the snares.

TODAY’S REFLECTION

Not all that Jesus did and said is exhaustive in the Sacred Scripture because the scripture itself attested to this. The Gospel of John tells us that there are also many other things which Jesus did that no single book can contain (John 21:25). The Sacred Scripture is the written tradition. There is also the oral tradition. The scripture itself reveals it, “so then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth [oral tradition] or by letter [written tradition]” (2 Thess. 2:15). Let us hold firm to the traditions we received. Let us not be deceived by those who say, “Scripture alone”.

TODAY’S REFLECTION

Anyone who loves Jesus and believes that he came from the Father to save the world has access to divine provisions through the name of Jesus. Any disciple of Jesus is entitled to anything he asks in the name of Jesus. However, entitlement does not automatically mean possession. Jesus tells us that we are entitled to have anything if we ask. We shall possess whatever we ask the Father in the name of Jesus because we are entitled to ask and receive. Paul, Apollos, and many others were answered prayers of the disciples of Jesus. Let us ask God for the grace to be, to have, and to love in the name of Jesus.

TODAY'S REFLECTION

Natural reason can lead men to the knowledge of God, but the self-revelation of the Triune God is make more concrete by the gift of faith. According to Pope St John Paul II: “Faith and reason are the two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth.” Paul discovered that the Athenians in their philosophical investigation did have this idea of God, though it was unclear to them. On seeing the alter to “An Unknown God.” Paul brilliantly tries to convince them of the existence of the one true God, who is not the work of any human hands but He created us and redeemed us in Christ Jesus. For in Him we live, move and have our being. May the Paraclete lead us to the complete truth!

TODAY’S REFLECTION

The central theme that runs through al today’s readings is that of God’s superabundant love for humanity. In this love of God, poured out for all mankind, no one is left out; there is a universal inclusion of all races, peoples, and tongues in the salvation wrought for us by Christ’s death and resurrection. According to St Peter, addressing the household of Cornelius in the first reading, “God has no favorites, but anybody of any nationality who fears God and does what is right is acceptable to Him.” St Augustine says that the love of God for us made manifest in Christ is “inexpressibly marvelous and marvelously inexpressible”. O God of love, renew in us the love we have wasted and may the water of our rebirth fill us with your love!
