BALANCING CARE – Time Management Tips for Student Nurses (by Theophilus Asante)

Introduction

The life of a student nurse is a delicate dance of acquiring knowledge, honing skills, and providing care. As nursing students, you're tasked with mastering a vast amount of information, participating in clinical rotations, and still finding time for your personal life. It is a challenging endeavor that requires effective time management skills. In this article, we'll explore the significance of time management for student nurses and provide you with valuable strategies to help you succeed in your journey.

The Importance of Time Management for Student Nurses

Student nurses are the future of healthcare, and the way you manage your time can significantly impact the quality of care you provide. Effective time management is not just about completing tasks; it is about optimizing your education, enhancing your clinical performance, and ensuring the best patient outcomes. Time management is, in essence, patient management.

Key Time Management Strategies

1. Prioritization:
The key to efficient time management is prioritization. In the healthcare world, not all tasks are created equal. Identify and categorize your tasks based on urgency and importance. Focus on what matters most. For example, studying for a crucial exam should take precedence over less urgent assignments.

2. Time Blocking:
Time blocking is a proven technique that helps you allocate specific time slots for various activities. Create a weekly schedule that designates dedicated hours for studying, clinical rotations, and personal time. This helps you maintain a structured routine and prevents last-minute cramming.

3. Effective Study Techniques:
When it comes to studying, quality matters more than quantity. Employ active learning techniques like creating flashcards, engaging in study groups, and utilizing online resources. These methods can maximize your learning in less time, leaving you with more opportunities for other responsibilities.

4. Utilizing Technology:
Modern technology can be a student nurse's best friend. Explore apps and tools designed for time management, note-taking, and organization. These can help streamline your nursing education tasks, making them more efficient and less time-consuming.

Balancing Clinical, Study, and Personal Life

In the whirlwind of nursing school, it is essential to always remember self-care and maintaining a work-life balance. While it may be tempting to spend every waking moment studying and working in clinicals, it is vital to look after your well-being. Managing stress, staying healthy, and maintaining relationships are equally crucial.
Take short breaks to recharge your mind and body. Engage in physical activity, mindfulness, or relaxation techniques to manage stress. Ensuring a balanced diet and adequate sleep is fundamental for your physical and mental health.

Real-World Examples

To illustrate the effectiveness of these time management strategies, consider the experiences of experienced nurses and instructors. They've been through the rigorous demands of nursing education and have their own time-tested techniques for success. Many of them would attribute their achievements to prioritization, time blocking, and using technology effectively.

Conclusion

In the fast-paced world of nursing education, time is a valuable resource. Effective time management is not just about checking tasks off your to-do list; it is about optimizing your education, enhancing your clinical performance, and ensuring the best patient care. Embrace the strategies of prioritization, time blocking, effective study techniques, and technology use. They will not only help you excel academically but also allow you to lead a well-balanced life.

Remember that the best nurses are those who have mastered the art of time management. They provide care that's not only competent but also compassionate, and that's a testament to their ability to balance the demands of their profession and their personal lives. As a student nurse, you have the opportunity to lay the foundation for your future success by mastering the art of time management.

Another Nurse has been found dead😪

A 33-YEAR-old female nurse has been gruesomely murdered in what looks like a contract killing.

The deceased, Rita Asamoah, a resident of Atwima Boko in the Ashanti Region, did not return home after closing from work on Monday, October 9, 2023.

Her husband, Otuo Serebour, sensing danger, reported to the Denchemouso Police Station that his wife was missing at 12 midnight on Monday.

Barely six hours later, Rita’s lifeless body was found in a nearby bush at a distance of about 78 meters from her house at Atwima Boko.

Surprisingly, there were no marks of violence on the body except some vomit and foams around the nostrils when she was found at the crime scene.

Rita’s handbag was also found at the scene as well as a polythene bag containing her ID cards and some medicines, the police said.

No arrest has been made yet but the dead body has since been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) mortuary for autopsy.

However, preliminary police investigations revealed that Rita, a resident of Atwima Boko, worked as a nurse at Mac Hills Clinic Danyame in Kumasi.

As usual, Rita went to work the on 09/10/23 but she did not return home as at 7pm so her husband, Otuo Serebuor called her workplace to check.

“When her manager, Graham David, was contacted on phone, he indicated that, he personally alighted her at Sofoline around 1800hours same day for the victim to look for another vehicle and continue home”, a police report said.

The police document, sighted by the paper, also said the information was then relayed to the Regional Control Room for necessary action.

Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Commander, COP Afful Boakye Yiadom has since spoken to the family and expressed the condolences of the IGP and the Police Administration.

A SAD DEVELOPMENT FROM WALEWALE HOSPITAL, GHANA.

On Sunday October 8th, 2023, a Nurse at the Walewale hospital by name Salifu Abdulai popularly known as "EXPENSIVE" from Nalerigu was beaten to pulp and battered by some hooligans and dumped somewhere.

A good Samaritan identified him and notified his co-tenants who rushed him to the Walewale hospital around midday on same Sunday October 8th, 2023. He was subsequently referred to the Tamale Teaching Hospital later in the evening around 7pm and he unfortunately passed on in the early hours of Monday October 9th, 2023.

Reports from the municipality suggest that this is not the first time Nurses have been attacked by residents of Walewale. In 2018, a Nurse by name Yussif Kariyama now the Deema-Naa of Nasia was beaten right inside the Emergency ward of the hospital whilst on duty. The culprits were arrested and arraigned before court in Tamale and after months of back and forth, the case ended as a foolish case. There are countless occasions of Nurses been slapped by residents whilst on duty.

The most painful aspect of it all is that, Abdulai Salifu is one of the hardworking and committed Nurses in the hospital. He was posted to the Savelugu Municipality and worked there for almost 6 years. He took transfer to the West Mamprusi Municipality only last year to serve his people and also to be closer to home, only for his live to be taken in this painful manner by his own people.

The killing of Salifu Abdulai is the height of it all and if those hooligans are not brought to book and dealt with accordingly, the Nurses of the hospital and the entire Municipality will lay down their tools. This is an attack on the Nursing profession and this issue shall not be swept under the carpet.

This is very unfortunate and a big blow to the deceased family and the entire Nursing fraternity.

Then as and when the person goes for dialysis, he or she pays for the cost of the dialysis per session, as against the number of sessions the person has to do per week.

Be in the known that dialysis treatment is pay as you go.
What you have to do now is to be very conscious about your health.
