CHILD OF THE SEA
Episode One
Maduka made it a yearly ritual to visit his village during the December festivities with his family; his wife, Ihuoma.
This year was no exception. Driving his new car, by the time he arrived just about dusk in just about dusk, it was coated in the dust of heavy harmattan.
As he arrived, a small crowd of persons, including scrawny little children that spotted the car began to trail after it chanting “Eze Buillion van”. Maduka was rich.
By the time he reached his family mansion where his aging mother lived, some persons were already there waiting for them. The loud revv of his car’s engine alerted Mama that her only son was around. She dashed out through the open front door to greet him and his wife.
Mama wore smiles so wide, her eyes narrowed to slits. If she had smiled a little wider the corners of her lips would touch her ears.
Upon seeing the new car which her son came in, Mama began to rhythmically shake her waists and sing loudly in a crackling. “E dimma.. E dimma! E dimma!! E dimma!!! Onye nwem E dimma!!!!”
Her songs drew other people present to come and behold the spectacle that was Maduka’s Benz V-boot.
Soon they came buzzing around the car and making remarks like: “Omaka, this one di kwa expensive o", before coming over to Maduka, the men greeted him with the traditional handshake and the women curtsied because Maduka was a titled man and they hailed him with chants things like, "Ego di kwa di nu di" or "bullion van".
All the while Maduka just smiled and replied by handing out slim wads of crisp naira notes to them. "Use this for Christmas", Maduka would say. And to the children who gathered around wearing bougous threadbare clothes, with scrawny sticks for legs, heads one would imagine it was too heavy for them and runny noses that never dried, he gave 200 naira notes each and said, "It's from Jesus".
Maduka’s wife just watched and smiled while his mother attempted to chase the children away.
