A great time to help South Georgia's wildlife recovery...

Support South Georgia through the Big Give Green Match Fund

Today marks the launch of the South Georgia Heritage Trust’s Green Match Fund campaign. Over the next week, until midday on 25th April, you can donate via our Green Match Fund campaign to support our work and have your gift matched. So, for one week only you can make one donation and have twice the impact at South Georgia and for its wildlife!

Your donation will help fund priority conservation and research projects at South Georgia as well as our outreach and communications work telling South Georgia’s inspirational story.

With your help today and this week we can reach (and hopefully surpass) our target of £20,000.

Please follow the link below or in our bio to make a donation to SGHT.

South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands is a British Overseas Territory in the southern Atlantic Ocean. Stunningly beautiful and rugged, this island wildlife sanctuary, once visited, is not easily forgotten. Its snow covered peaks, blue glacier ice and emerald green bays are breathtaking sights.

Interesting population interchanges for humpbacks in the South Atlantic.

Read our new paper! 🐋

Humpback whales make long migrations between feeding areas and breeding territories. But most stay within the boundaries of their known Stocks. In our newest open access publication in Scientific Reports, we report on the interchange of Southern Hemisphere humpback whales between Brazil and SouthAfrica. We queried a global database of 69,997 individually distinct humpback whales identified with photographs of their flukes. Of 6,982 humpback whales identified in both locations, six whales were photographed in Brazil and South Africa. Four whales originally photographed off Abrolhos Bank, Brazil were photographed off the Western Cape, South Africa (feeding grounds for B2). Two whales originally photographed off the Western Cape were photographed off Brazil, one traveling to the Eastern Cape in the Southwestern Indian Ocean (a migration corridor for C1) before migrating westward to Brazil. Our findings confirm interchange of humpback whales across the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans and the importance of international collaboration to understand population boundaries. They also highlight the strength of international collaborations towards better understanding the boundaries of marine megafauna populations. St Andrews Bay, South Georgia

“This place blows my mind every time again. Probably it was first sighted by the British expedition lead by captain Cook which explored the north coast of South Georgia in 1775.

Today when we visit this place we mostly come for the immense sized rookery of king penguins. Well over 300.000 king penguins can be found here and it’s one’s of nature’s greatest spectacles! Close to 500.000 animals are here together sharing a 2 miles beach! Penguins, fur seals and great numbers of elephant seals!

Every time it’s a privilege to come here!”
