2024’s first playlist is called “Life is a horizontal fall”, such a poetic definition by ambient artist Canaan Balsam. 15 songs and 60 mins. New material from Dina Ögon, Jordan Rakei, Black Grape (Happy Mondays’ Shaun Ryder), Joel Ross, Yussef Dayes and some 2023 stuff from Fulgeance, Sudanese keyboardis wizard Jantra, Labelle, Irish folkers Lankum (can’t get over them), Fantastic Twins and Ricardo Villalobos’ reimagining of A Mountain of One. Bit electronic, bit jazzy, bit ambient - as always.

Cumartesi Istanbul’un en yenilikci restoranı ve en iyi listening roomu .ist’da caliyorum. Normalde insanlar dans etmezse kaygısıyla çalamadığım en özel world music, jazz vb. şeyleri seçtim. Yine de dans edicez korkmayın, ama başka bi tune’a edicez. Karayipler, Afrika, Jamaika, Mauritius, sega, compas, cadence. Çıkışta zenci olarak çıkıcaz. Görüşelims.

We are back online after a long Summer period. New playlist with a lot of jazzy keys, neo soul & hip-hop. Main dish served comes from the UK in the form of new albums by Little Simz, collaborator Cleo Sol, her band SAULT (which has been the soundtrack to our Summer), and Jordan Rakei whom all hail from the UK’s burgeoning neo soul scene.

Other points of interest Jamila Woods covering Tracy Chapman’s Fast Car, new hip-hop and beatz from Stimulator Jones, Damu The Fudgemunk, The Poets of Rhyhtm, Sven Wunder, new Jazz is Dead featuring Azymuth - which reminded me of Mos Def’s classic Umi Says.

Will do a few thematic playlists in the coming weeks, some ambient electronics, a Caribbean compilation, some samba-cancion from 60’s Brasil, an Americana Heartland AOR one in the pipes!

ABBA has no problem with any of this, largely because the members are all still alive and have complete control over their images. Instead of hitting the road as a bunch of septuagenarians in non-age-appropriate costumes, they’re working with a staff of 850 people at George Lucas’ Industrial Light and Magic to create something beyond holograms. Using 160 cameras focused on the members as they wore motion-capture suits over a five-week shoot, ILM “captur[ed] every mannerism, emotion and the soul of their beings,” resulting in something that’s not “a version or a copy of ABBA, but actually them.”

Think hologram performances by dead musicians were spooky? Just wait until the full implications of these virtual performers become clear.

Barcelona city council has announced half a million euros’ worth of subsidies for ‘large-format’ concerts in the city this summer. The €500,000 in grants will go towards the cost of promoting shows at two of Barcelona’s most celebrated open-air venues

The grants aim to help the city “regain [its] leadership as the capital of live music in southern Europe”.

Half a million euros will be made available for shows of up to 3,000 people in Catalan capital Barcelona from May to September.
