This is why second teams are now called Athletic 😃
Seems a few people got a bit excited when they saw the proposed league structure recently and '2nds' had been changed to Athletic.
So, the WRU have issued the following statement:
There seems to be some confusion over the National/Conference leagues in relation to second teams.
Chris Ower, the WRU's Head of Playing and Retention, clears it all up in the following communication to clubs:
1. Why are they being called " Athletic"
Now nationally 2nd XV's have been included across all our geographical leagues from season 2024-25, we need to distinguish and have consistency pan Wales because clubs are now effectively 2 separate entities relating to our rules and regulations, registration of players and squads, permits and how they appear on our digital systems and league tables administration. We are not asking clubs to change how they wish to refer to themselves on social media, internal/external communications etc.
2. Why do they have to apply to join the leagues.
We have issued a communication to all Clubs in Wales relating to expressions of interest to join the revised 2nd Team Conference Leagues (the level below National Leagues). We fully appreciate NW already has 2nd Teams in the National League structures but we want to be transparent. The WRU Conference(s) have been in position for 5 seasons.
3. What does a conference league look like.
As per previous answer, the Conference is the approved league for those 2nd Teams whom are most competitive, ambitious and whom wish to consider full National League entry (subject to meeting criteria) over a 2 year period in the Conference. I again appreciated that NW has had a different league structure over the past number of years.
So, there you have it... 👍
