New Restoration Project of a Carved Limestone Head on a Panel from the Historical Easton Estate, Norfolk ....

Nestled in rolling Lincolnshire and Rutland countryside, Easton is a classic rural estate that’s been owned and managed by the Cholmeley family since 1561. Through the centuries, it has played home to generations of families.
The manor house was purchased by Sir Henry Cholmeley in 1606. The gardens evolved over the centuries, from stone enclosures to Victorian bedding and borders.
This carved stone head was found recently where it has lain for the past 65 years in the garden of gate Lodge on the estate...... now it will be cleaned and preserved and brought back to its original condition, before being displayed as part of my collection. Research will begin try and identify who the head represents...

Stunning Medieval Carved Stone Gargoyle/Grotesque Head Found and Acquired..

Today I acquired and collected eight carved stone fragments from a garden near Saddleworth... most of the carvings are fragmentary pieces and seem to be ecclesiastical possibly from a church. With foliage, oak leaves etc carved into columns etc they form an interesting collection. However one piece is clearly an early Gargoyle possibly medieval in date. More preservation and research lies ahead. See all images attached...

Hand Carved Antique Oolitic Limestone Canthus church Column Received Today....

Today I received the antique Oolitic carved limestone church column that I highlighted a couple of weeks ago. A lot of research has taken place allowing me to identify beyond doubt the origins of the column...
However dating is a little bit more difficult. The church that was demolished in 1982 was built in 1874. However three earlier churches had been built on the same site previously as far back as the early 1600s.... this leaves the date of the column wide open. Was this column a remnant from the early church that had been reused or discarded at the time of subsequent rebuilding on the site ??
We may never know the answer to this question but what is clear is the fact that this column has now been rescued, preserved and saved....

Treasures from the Deep ... Another Unique Ancient Chance Find ??.....

Yesterday I came across an old cardboard box with 'Diver's Relics' written on the outside of the box ? It was for sale for a small amount under £30... I asked the seller of the box if they knew where the objects had been discovered? ...
They replied that they only knew it had come from a house clearance and that the diver used to go diving in the sea looking for objects as a hobby but where exactly remained a mystery. I decided to take a gamble and purchase the box. Inside the box are five objects including two complete China cups, encrusted on the surface and one large intact glass vessel. Nothing too unusual or outstanding at first but then in the box are two bronze objects. The first one being a bronze frame and still complete with cogs and teeth. But the most stunning and surprising object that was in the box is a large bronze tripod vessel still with one leg fully intact with its lion paw foot !!
This looks very much like an oil or cosmetics bronze flask and it is still heavily encrusted, hiding what seems to be some finer details awaiting to be revealed when I come to preserve and gently remove excess encrustations. Is this vessel Roman/Greek lost at sea from ship of wreck ? It would give a clue as to where the diver may have been diving in the past. Time will tell .... I will be concentrating on the bronze vessel next week and hoping to reveal more details as I preserve what is left. If you look at the image of the complete leg remaining, is that a face on the upper part of the leg...

Three Medieval Lead Ampullea Dating to 13th/15th Century. Secured for Ecclesiastical Collection...

I'm pleased to confirm that three medieval lead ampullas have been acquired and will join the medieval section of my Ecclesiastical Collection shortly.
Ampullae were popular religious souvenirs for pilgrims in medieval England. They were small lead containers that held holy water from religious sites. Holy water was thought to have special qualities, and lead ampullae were produced in vast numbers. Over 1,400 examples have been recorded by the Portable Antiquities Scheme to date. These examples that join the collection are richly decorated and in overall good condition for their age.

Antique Ivorex Stone Cast of St. Augustine of Canterbury acquired for Ecclesiastical Collection...

I'm pleased to have acquired a 2nd stunning stone cast, this one portraying St. Augustine of Canterbury alongside my earlier acquisition of a similar carving of St. Thomas A Becket. Both dating from the 19th century, they are rare examples and will be exhibited in the future as part of future exhibitions that I will hold.
Augustine of Canterbury (early 6th century) was a Christian monk who became the first archbishop of Canterbury in the year 597. He is considered the "Apostle to the English”.
Augustine was the prior of a monastery in Rome when Pope Gregory the Great chose him in 595 to lead a mission, usually known as the Gregorian mission, to Britain to Christianize King Æthelberht and his Kingdom of Kent from Anglo-Saxon paganism. Kent was likely chosen because Æthelberht commanded major influence over neighbouring Anglo-Saxon kingdoms in addition to his marriage to Bertha, a Frankish princess, who was expected to exert some influence over her husband. Before reaching Kent, the missionaries had considered turning back, but Gregory urged them on, and in 597, Augustine landed on the Isle of Thanet and proceeded to Æthelberht's main town of Canterbury.
This carved portrait is beautiful in its detail and will display proudly alongside the carving of St. Thomas A Becket.

Antique Ivorex Stone Cast of St. Thomas A Becket acquired for Ecclesiastical Collection...

I'm pleased to have acquired this stunning antique stone cast to add to my Ecclesiastical Collection that I regularly display at Heritage exhibitions.
Thomas Becket, also known as Saint Thomas of Canterbury, Thomas of London and later Thomas à Becket lived 21st December 1120 – 29 December 1170. He served as Lord Chancellor from 1155 to 1162, and then notably as Archbishop of Canterbury from 1162 until his death in 1170. He engaged in conflict with Henry II, King of England, over the rights and privileges of the Church and was murdered by followers of the King in Canterbury Cathedral. Soon after his death, he was canonised by Pope Alexander III. He is venerated as a saint and martyr by the Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion.

ROLLBACK TO THE PAST ARCHIVES .....
The Sacred Sanctus Bell of St Giovanni Calabita Church - Rome 1577 AD -The Extreme Humility of Christ.

In the year of 1577 AD Joannes Melo, a bellfounder in Vervulanus, Italy was to cast a sacred bronze Sanctus bell of the highest quality from the finest bronze available. But this was no ordinary bell for it carried upon it the icon of the Extreme Humility of Christ portraying Christ soon after his crucifixion.
The bell was to be hung in the church of St Giovanni Calabita on Tiber Island in Rome where it was to remain for the next three hundred and twenty three years. In 1900 the bell was about to be destroyed and smelted down but instead was rescued by a famous Victorian archaeologist and historian.
The bell was to make it to the shores of Britain only to be lost in the 1920's and not seen again !!
However in 2022 the bell was to be rediscovered once again by James Balme sitting in a garden near London being used as a garden ornament and unrecognised for its extreme importance. The bell is of extreme rarity and is one of just a handful of such bells to be found in Britain today..........

An Interesting pair of Encaustic Floor Tiles Acquired.....

A couple of days ago I was lucky enough to acquire these two encaustic floor tiles. Each one carries a different subject matter. The first tile depicts two medieval people busy cooking or possibly dyeing materials. The second tile depicts two medieval blacksmiths/metal workers hammering.
The reverse of the tiles show the raw clay of the tiles plus some of the original white floor plaster....
Each tile measure 5 inch x 5 inch.
Both are a welcome addition to join many of the other encaustic floor tiles recently recovered.

Rollback to the Past - "A Rich History of St Oswald's Church"- A Rambles through History Special.

Welcome to our Rambles through History special episode featuring the ancient church of St Oswald in Winwick, Cheshire. Episode 20 entitled 'A Rich History of St Oswald's Church' takes us on a journey back in time to see this stunning place of worship. On my visit we take a look at the evidence and artefacts that still remain at St Oswald's from as early as Anglo-Saxon times as well as taking a look at the Gerard chapel and the Legh chapel dating back to 1330 AD where beautiful monuments and memorials can be seen.
I also highlight how the church suffered during the English Civil War and how the battle of Red Bank raged to the north of the church as well as around the church itself.
The film is also complemented with a visual tour of the interior of the church and many of it's wonderful treasures from centuries past.

Consignment of Another Nine Important Stone Carvings Related to the Malmesbury Abbey Mid - 13th Century Stone Columns Arrived Today......

I'm pleased to confirm that today I received my latest consignment of stone carvings related to the mid 13th century stone columns I acquired earlier this year. The nine pieces and the columns are most probably from the remains of shattered masonry from the collapse and destruction of Malmesbury abbey when the tower collapsed in the 16th century destroying much of the church. The west tower fell around 1550, demolishing the three westernmost bays of the nave. As a result of these collapses, less than half of the original building stands today. Following the Dissolution of the abbey, much of its twenty-three thousand acres, was sold to a wealthy merchant, William Stumpe.
The pieces received today include a carved stone torso with upper slots possibly for the addition of arms. Also received today are two carved arms or possibly legs, at this moment it's hard to decide...
More research will take place in the coming weeks.
More carved pieces are expected to be secured in the coming weeks to help build and secure this important archive of 12th/13th century stonework...

Stunning and huge, very early church key acquired for Restoration..

Today I was lucky enough to acquire a very large early iron church door key measuring almost 1ft in length and in good condition. I will be restoring the key shortly. The handle of the key is a quatrefoil design and you can see a purposeful cut allowing the key to be attached to a loop or chain. Notice the gothic design to be found at the base of the key also.
In folklore, church keys had the power to cure the sick, tame unruly children, and catch one’s true love. Church keys were especially magical. The giant, heavy key, forged of iron by the blacksmith, could help alleviate or even cure illness.
Many different types of locks can be found on church doors, depending on age, location and patronage. They may be either rim locks, mortice locks or even padlocks, and be of completely metal construction or of wood and iron.

STUNNING MEDIEVAL STONE CARVINGS ARRIVED TODAY.....

As mentioned late last week I acquired another three medieval stone carvings linked to the 13th century stone ecclesiastical columns that I recovered a couple of months ago. Today they arrived for cleaning and preservation. The three pieces appear to have come from a carved figure or statue, even possibly a carved frieze and probably originally from the abbey....
The pieces consist of a large carved stone torso standing 15 inches tall x 8 inches wide, with a hand holding onto either a bible or possibly a robe, a carved section of a lower leg from above the ankle to below the knee, and a heavily carved piece that seems to represent a possible upper arm with gathered robe or sleeve....
More pieces are possibly going to come to light in the coming weeks that may correspond to the three pieces received today....

Welcome to my feature remembering the twelve villagers of Barthomley who lost their lives on Christmas eve 1643 at the hands of Major Connought and his Royalist troops. Twenty men from the village were captured by by the Royalist troops in the church tower and steeple on that fateful day and smoked out. Twelve were put to the sword and another five beaten badly and left for dead whilst three men managed to escape.
This film is a short tribute to these men who's names will live on into history for many years to come......

STUNNING 13TH/14TH CENTURY COMPLETE ENCAUSTIC FLOOR TILE ACQUIRED FOR ECCLIASTICAL COLLECTION.....

I'm pleased to confirm that today I acquired a lovely and rare complete 13th/14th Century encaustic lead glazed floor tile in excellent state of preservation. Most probably from an Abbey this tile would have been walked upon regularly by the religious order of monks.....
Measuring 5 inches x 5 inches the design of the tile is interesting and of the period.
Encaustic or inlaid tiles enjoyed two periods of great popularity. The first came in the 13th century and lasted until the English Reformation under Henry VIII in the 16th century, at which time removed much medieval church decoration along with the policy of the dissolution of the monasteries. The second period of popularity was in the Victorian period with mass production of tiles based upon earlier designs, however these were more modern in appearance. This tile is a great recovery and will be displayed along with the 13th century ecclesiastical stone columns recovered recently.

Latest Malmesbury Stone Carvings Received Today......

Today I received two more carved stone pieces related directly to the 13th century stone columns from Malmesbury abbey that I rescued last month.... the two pieces are interesting. One piece is a carved section from a stone arch. The other piece seems to be the top stone from a door frame or possibly a window. Plenty of research ahead with these two pieces in the coming weeks but at least saved now and back with the stone columns
