We are devastated to confirm that the rumours are true. Editor Ray has concluded this week to cease publication for good and has informed staff today. We are reeling at the abrupt decision just before Christmas. Thank you everyone for your support. We have done all we can and tried to serve our community as a newspaper should.

Warminster has sadly lost a significant part of its history today and we appreciate your well wishes as we lament this momentous occasion for our wonderful town.

Protect Our Pollinators

The plight of bees has been highlighted locally as the country marks Bees’ Needs Week.

The national initiative started on Monday and ends today (14th July) and is an annual event coordinated by Defra, working alongside a host of organisations such as the MOD and other major land managers, universities, environmental charities and the general public.

The aim of the week is to raise awareness of the importance of pollinators and share ideas, actions and activities that highlight the ways in which everyone can help bees and other pollinators to thrive.

See this week's Journal (Friday 12th July) for more information and photos of the work being done locally.

Mystery Railings Damage

A set of railings on Deverill Road was partially destroyed last week and has remained draped in police tape.

Orange plastic bollards now take the place of where the already damaged railings were situated not far from the Fox and Hounds pub and just opposite Giles Hollow.

The Warminster Journal contacted the police after being informed by a source that a road traffic collision had taken place there.

A spokesman for Wiltshire Police said there was nothing on their logs for Deverill Road for the dates of last week.

Third Pharmacy Decision Delight

Community leaders have spoken of their “delight” after an application to reinstate a third pharmacy in Warminster was successful.

Prime Scripts Ltd. made the application to NHS England in February to establish a pharmacy in Broxburn Road and it has garnered widespread support from patients who have been left queuing for hours after Boots closed its pharmacy in The Avenue in October of last year.

The South West Pharmaceutical Services Regulations Committee (PSRC) met last week when it determined that the application should be granted.

See this week's Journal (Friday 12th July) for the full story.

Arson Arrest In Warminster

Police have arrested a man on suspicion of arson following a house fire in Warminster yesterday.

More than 20 firefighters tackled the blaze in The Downlands after emergency services were called at around 2.46pm.

A man in his 40s was taken to hospital to be treated for reportedly minor injuries and has now been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. He has been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Three fire engines were mobilised from Warminster, Trowbridge and Shaftesbury along with a fire engine from Frome, and an aerial ladder platform appliance from Swindon was used.

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said, “A cordon is in place at a property in The Downlands, Warminster, following a fire inside the property yesterday afternoon (19/06).

“At around 3.15pm, we attended the property in support of our colleagues in the emergency services.

“A man in his 40s was taken to hospital to be treated for reportedly minor injuries and has now been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. He has been released on bail pending further enquiries.

“A scene is in place at the property while further enquiries are carried out.”

A spokesman for Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said, “We were called at 2:46pm yesterday afternoon with reports of a property fire.

“On arrival, firefighters found a well-developed fire on the first floor of the property which also spread to the roof. Four breathing apparatus wearers used two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire and our stop was in at 4.23pm.”

Council Wants More Guidance On Solar Farms

Wiltshire Council has called on the government to provide more clarity over its strategy for delivering solar farms.

At its full council meeting on Tuesday 21st May, Wiltshire Council voted overwhelmingly to support the motion brought forward by Cllr. Nick Botterill.

The councillor, who is the cabinet member for finance, development management and strategic planning, was joined by Cllr. Phil Alford, cabinet member for housing, in expressing the council's increasing concern over the concentration of solar farms in Wiltshire.

The motion also asks the government to define more closely what is meant by the 'cumulative impact' of solar farms and to ensure that solar farms and battery storage compounds are not concentrated in specific areas, effectively industrialising the countryside.

The motion was passed with 75 councillors for, two against and six abstentions.

Leader of Wiltshire Council Cllr. Richard Clewer said, “The motion that was passed at yesterday's (Tuesday) full council meeting calls on the Secretary of State for the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities to define more closely what is meant by 'cumulative impact' regarding solar farms.

“It also requests that the government takes clear steps to ensure that solar developments are more evenly spread across the UK and not concentrated in specific areas.

“The need to protect farming and the rural way of life is extremely important and Wiltshire Council is determined to do everything we can through planning policy and every other means at our disposal to support our farmers and our rural communities.

“We support the need for solar power, on the roofs of our houses and industrial buildings and on land of low agricultural value, but we do not want to see villages entirely surrounded by solar farms, industrialising the countryside.

“As the pressures of climate change hit the world, food production will be placed under strain and it is vital that England and Wiltshire are looking to protect and increase food production and not reduce it to build solar farms.”

Major Town Sewerage Works To Start This Summer

A main road to Warminster’s town centre will be partially closed for up to seven months as nearly £2 million of essential sewerage works takes place.

Weymouth Street will see a single lane closure between August and March of next year as Wessex Water completes a project to enhance the sewer system.

The latest works are the third set to be announced by the company, which will be investing £1.8 million to see more than 400,000 litres of additional sewer storage built underground within the car park at the northern end of the street.

The storage tank will help improve the quality of water in the River Were by hosting flows from combined sewers, which carry both wastewater and rainwater, during heavy storms to be later returned to the sewer prior to being piped to a water recycling centre for safe treatment when the storm recedes.

Wessex Water said this would decrease the number of times storm overflows operate automatically. Overflows are designed as a relief valve to protect homes from flooding and the scheme is part of a wider £3 million a month investment by the company to reduce how often storm overflows operate.

The project will include a northbound single lane closure for through traffic on Weymouth Street with a diversion in place around Sambourne Road, George Street and the B3414.

Speaking to the Warminster Journal, a Wessex Water spokesman said, “We’re investing nearly £2 million in Warminster on separate projects to enhance our sewer network as part of our programme to help protect the environment and improve the quality of water in the Were river running through the town.

“A £1.8 million project that will see an additional 407,000 litres of sewer storage built underground is due to get underway in August and continue until March of next year.

“As agreed with Wiltshire Council, a northbound single lane closure for through traffic on Weymouth Street will be in place at the Morrisons petrol station roundabout to allow this work to continue safely.

“Just prior to that, a £70,000 scheme to prevent the risk of pollution by enhancing nearly 300 metres of sewers will include a closure of Weymouth Street to through traffic at the roundabout near the Morrisons store from Wednesday 31st July for up to three days.”

The sewer lining scheme had been scheduled for Monday 1st July but Wessex Water has rearranged this for the end of the month and will be writing to people with confirmation of the work and dates prior to it starting.

He added, “We are already working closely with Warminster Town Council with regard to these projects and will be writing to customers and businesses throughout the town about them shortly.

“In addition, a community drop-in session regarding the Weymouth Street storage project will be held on Wednesday 5th June at Warminster Civic Centre at which members of our team will be on hand to provide more information and answer customer questions.’’

Further sewerage work within Lake Pleasure Grounds could take place at the end of July but this has yet to be confirmed and remains at the planning stage. When this has been finalised, Wessex Water will speak to local stakeholders and write to customers.

The company said that the three projects, while separate in delivery, are all related to enhancing the sewer system in Warminster and represent a significant investment in the town.

New Guests Arrive In Town

Residents and visitors to Warminster may have twisted their necks after catching sight of these majestic new additions to the high street.

Crockerton-based artist Tanya Hinton has proved her talents are certainly head and shoulders above the rest after completing the new artwork of a giraffe and its calf on an empty property in Weymouth Street.

Tanya is known by many as the ‘bird lady’ for painting numerous feathered friends on walls and vacant shop fronts in Warminster where people come from far and wide to admire.

The Warminster Journal spoke to Tanya in this week’s edition (Friday 31st May) to hear why she chose giraffes for her next mammal masterpiece.

Funding Secured For Community Run

Town councillors have voted to award £2,800 to set up a weekly community run at Thoulstone Park.

Members of Warminster Town Council met for an extra ordinary meeting yesterday (Tuesday) when it was decided to grant the funding to parkrun - a global community event where people walk, jog and run 5km.

There are currently 1,261 parkrun events that take place across the country and the organisation behind them has offered to fund £2,000 toward the cost of establishing another run in Wiltshire.

The amount needed to set-up the event includes the purchase of essential equipment, ensuring the safety and logistics of the run and costs relating to IT.

The funding request was considered “urgent” because organisers are looking to launch parkrun in less than two months and therefore would need the grant in place before June.

Funding will come from town council general reserves.

Police in Warminster are urging people to report graffiti following a recent spate of vandalism across the town.

The tag 'Snot' has been sighted more than 20 times in several areas including town centre locations, The Avenue, and Sambourne Road.

The Journal contacted Warminster Town Council, Wiltshire Council and Wiltshire Police to see if they were aware of the issue and what could be done.

Residents have spoken of their disgust at the behaviour, which Warminster Police has warned is criminal damage.

See this week's Journal (Friday 17th May) for the full story and next week we will have a follow up.

Update On New Pharmacy For Warminster

An application to establish a new pharmacy on the western edge of the town is progressing.

The Journal reported in February that an application had been received by NHS PCSE from Prime Scripts Ltd. who wish to set up a pharmacy in Broxburn Road offering Sunday hours.

With just Boots in Market Place and Well in The Cornmarket - both of which are overstretched - many patients are hopeful the pharmacy license will be granted.

Feedback on the application was due in February and we have managed to acquire an update from the NHS South West Collaborative Commissioning Hub Pharmacy Team.

For more see this week's Journal (Friday 3rd May).
