Heaton Moor Rugby Club has donated £500 to a charity that helps to feed parents staying at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. The club’s under-14s held a series of fundraising events for Emmie’s Kitchen, which provides around 100 hot meals and 80 snack bags a week to families on long-term and overnight stays at the hospital. Coach Martin Hagger said: “Heaton Moor Rugby Club has a long history of fundraising and also has a close connection to Emmie’s Kitchen, so this was an ideal charity to support....

An £8.25m investment and support programme will support entrepreneurs to start or grow businesses that tackle inequalities in communities. The Proper Good programme is offering grant funding, social investment and free-to-access, tailored training and business support to entrepreneurs in four areas of Greater Manchester – Bolton, Oldham, Stockport and Wigan. A Greater Manchester-based kids' media club has reached 1,000 children since launching. Media Cubs, the pop-up TV studio and newsroom club for children, has delivered after-school clubs, holiday camps and virtual clubs across the region since launching its first official club in Trafford in 2019. The club was set up by media social enterprise Yellow Jigsaw and aims to support all children to broadcast their confidence while learning how to create, debate and navigate the news....

A Trafford-based social entrepreneur has secured investment to expand their projects that enable people aged seven to 70 to develop news reporting and media skills. Kirsty Day, from Sale, has been awarded £21,600 from the Access to Growth fund, part of GM Social investment - a range of social investment funds delivered by Greater Manchester Centre for Voluntary Organisation. The investment will be used to develop two projects - a pop-up TV studio and newsroom clubs for children, Media Cubs, and to grow the online audience of the UK’s first older people’s-led news platform, Talking About My Generation....

A Chorlton community project will see car parking spaces swapped for people-friendly places. Our Streets Chorlton is teaming up with Beech Road Traders and pupils and teachers from Manchester Islamic High School for Girls on High Lane to swap out their car parking spaces to benefit people-friendly at the end of November and early December. The project called the ‘Parklet of Possibilities’ will see a ‘parklet’ – a reclaimed car parking space that reprioritises people over cars – installed for people to enjoy and also to gather people’s views about the idea of swapping car storage for spaces for people....

Manchester Credit Union held an awareness campaign to start a conversation with members of the public about their financial wellbeing. The campaign, called ‘How’s Your Balance?’, saw staff of Manchester Credit Union (MCU) and their members post photos of themselves on social media balancing various items on their heads - from teddies to kettles - to raise awareness of how they can help people stabilise their bank balance with an affordable loan and savings plan....

A popular student and community cafe has reopened its doors with a new plant-based menu and will act as a wellness hub post-pandemic. Milk and Honey, which is part of the University of Manchester’s chaplaincy St Peter’s House, was forced to shut its doors during the Covid-19 pandemic but is now ready to come out of hibernation. The re-opening of the Oxford Road café sees a new, affordable plant-based menu and a diverse calendar of events run by chefs, psychotherapists, yoga instructors and chaplains to support the wellbeing and inclusivity of new and existing students and the wider community in a comfortable, safe and welcoming environment....

The results close the gap at the top of the standings, leaving Iddon in third place and 15 points behind title rival Tarran Mackenzie with one round to go. Two Chorlton streets were closed off to vehicles as part of a project to encourage people to drive less. People living on on Burrows Avenue and Westfield Road signed up to take part in the week-long Open Streets trial where roads were re-prioritised in favour of people over cars. Neighbours on the streets took part in the week of change by reducing their own reliance on cars, pledging to walk, cycle or use public transport to go to work, school, or to the shops. ...

Over the last week the charity Care4Calais has been inundated with generous donations from people in and around the Greater Manchester area wanting to help the Afghanistan humanitarian crisis. So much so, the charity has filled its warehouse and taken a second with over 50 tonnes of donations to sort ready for distribution. Christian Iddon took his second win of 2021 as the Visiontrack Ducati rider claimed victory at the latest round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship at Brands Hatch. Stockport’s Iddon arrived in Kent as championship leader, but seventh on the grid for the opening encounter of the weekend gave him plenty to do. Race one on Saturday was red-flagged early on, but from the restart Iddon immediately made progress, taking four places on the opening lap to claim the final podium spot, where he would finish 12 laps later....
