Back in September in Holly Mackay's award-winning blog
Doom and gloom hit the housing market as the well-known Halifax House Price Index had its biggest annual fall since 2009, back when Gordon Brown was PM and Lady Gaga topped the charts.
There were fewer buyers (FOOI), sellers got alarmed (FOMO), and prices came under pressure.

Back in June:

Interest rate pain and mortgage angst

Interest rates went up to 5%, levels not seen since 2008. Inflation was sticky and nasty core inflation – unlike in most other countries – was also up.

But there were two teen consolation prizes

The average fuel bill was set to fall by about £50 a month from July. Hey ho.

And the Government will not upset pensioners in the year of a General Election so this ‘triple lock’ (which pegs the rise to inflation when it’s nasty) looked likely kick in.

Back in May

Another one from March (this was a big news month!)
We were borrowing a lot.
Growth was low.
And too many people are stopping work too early.
Where was the wonga going to come from? Tax. So you freeze income tax thresholds (more people get hoiked into higher tax bands), you cut capital gains tax allowances, you cut dividend allowances. You shove up tax wherever humanly possible. And you cross everything in sight and hope that interest rates fall so that nasty debt burden falls.
