How to support a friend or family member when you suspect they are in an abusive relationship, even if they haven't disclosed anything to you:

🤔 Educate yourself about domestic abuse and its signs. Familiarise yourself with the patterns and behaviours that indicate an abusive relationship.
📱 Keep communication open and let them know you're always available to listen. Be patient, as it may take time for them to feel comfortable disclosing their situation.
💬 Focus on your friend's feelings and experiences, rather than the suspected abuser or their actions. Try asking open-ended questions to help your friend reflect on their own emotions and experiences.
💪 Encourage and support their independence, emphasising their strengths and resilience. Acknowledge their accomplishments and remind them of their capabilities.
🔗 Share resources, like our helpline (08000 194 400) or the national domestic abuse helpline (0808 2000 247), without pressuring them to take immediate action. Let them know that these resources are available should they choose to access them.
🤐 Respect their decisions, even if they're not ready to leave or seek help.
❤️ Prioritise their safety and wellbeing by maintaining confidentiality. Be mindful of discussing your concerns with others, as this could put them at greater risk.
Remember, supporting someone who may be vulnerable or dealing with domestic abuse is delicate and complex. It's important to approach the situation with empathy, patience, and understanding, always centering their safety and wellbeing.

As we observe World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, let us remember that domestic abuse knows no age limit. We must never forget our elderly community members who may be suffering in silence, often at the hands of those who are meant to love and care for them. This also includes those who have endured historic abuse and still carry its scars. If you or someone you know is vulnerable or has been subjected to elder abuse, please reach out to us. Contact our free helpline on 08000 194 400 anytime. Between 9 am and 5 pm during the week, you can also live chat with us at www.havenrefuge.org.uk, or send us a WhatsApp message at 07719 558183. “...Serving as CEO and working with such a fantastic team to accomplish all that we have was one of the most remarkable experiences of my life. To all my colleagues and friends, thank you for making the last twenty years so special.”

As we kick off the highly anticipated EURO 2024 tournament tonight, it’s essential to shed light on the distressing correlation between football tournaments and heightened domestic abuse rates.

Research has shown that incidents of domestic abuse can increase by as much as 38% during major football events, underscoring the importance of raising awareness and taking action.

In the spirit of fair play and camaraderie, let us come together to give violence against women and girls the red card and ensure that passion for the beautiful game doesn't inadvertently lead to harm.

Will you help us blow the whistle on abuse? To create a safer environment for all, we urge you to stand against sexist attitudes and behaviours on and off the pitch, fostering an atmosphere of respect and equality. By combating these issues, we can help prevent abusive behaviours before they escalate.

If you or someone you know is vulnerable to abuse, please reach out for help. Contact our free helpline on 08000 194 400 anytime. Between 9 am and 5 pm you can also live chat with us at www.havenrefuge.org.uk, or send us a WhatsApp message at 07719 558183.

Creating a world free from domestic abuse begins with understanding that there is never an excuse to inflict harm on another person, be it physical harm or emotional harm. It is crucial for each of us to recognise the signs of abuse and take a stand against it. By raising awareness and supporting survivors, we can build safer, more compassionate communities that prioritise healthy relationships and provide resources for those in need.

Remember, we all have a role to play in preventing domestic abuse and promoting respect, empathy, and understanding. If you are unsure of what is classed as abuse, our domestic abuse guide is a good place to start. Visit www.bit.ly/thehavensguides.

How to support a friend who has disclosed that they are in an abusive relationship:

🤍 Believe them. Show empathy and validate their experiences. Listen without judgment. Offer a safe space for them to share.
🛡️ Help them create a safety plan. Our safety planning guide is available via: www.bit.ly/havenspguide. Encourage them to gather important documents, pack an emergency bag, and identify a safe place to go if needed.
🤫 Create a secret word, phrase, or signal with them that they can use when they need immediate help. This allows them to discreetly communicate their need for assistance when in danger.
❗ If they are ever in immediate danger, call the police.
📲 Encourage them to seek professional help. Offer to connect them with support services, like the national domestic abuse helpline via 0808 2000 247. Or our helpline via 08000 194 400.
💜 If it is safe for you to do so, check-in and maintain open communication. Be patient and understanding as they navigate their situation.

Our Story

When people arrive at our emergency accommodation we give them more than a refuge – we give them a home. We offer practical and emotional support services; giving people somewhere safe, warm and welcoming where they can come to terms with their experiences and develop the skills and confidence they need to take the next step on their journey away from abuse, towards a better future. The Haven have 6 refuges across the city supporting up to 64 women and 102 children at any one time – sadly we are always full to capacity. We also support out in the community too where last year we supported just under 700 women.

Did you know abuse has the same effect on the brain of a child that combat does on the brain of a solider? Our dedicated children’s team work hard to improve the overall health and well-being of children, helping them through therapeutic services to overcome the trauma of abuse, rebuild relationships with Mum, and develop the skills and confidence to move forward positively with their lives. Other services include a 24 hour staff/ helpline, criminal justice support, benefits advice, resettlement programmes, counselling and training.

We couldn't provide these services without support and that's where we need you. Every single penny we receive helps us to continue our vital work, supporting people affected by domestic abuse and homelessness. Find out more about our work or donate: www.havenrefuge.org.uk
