The Aberfeldy Sports Club - The Trustees of the Aberfeldy Sports Club (TASC) are pleased to announce that they have signed a contract for construction of a new building on the cleared site formerly occupied by the Aberfeldy Golf Club pavilion.
The successful tenderer was Alpha Projects (Scotland) Limited, who plan to commence work in December and complete construction by October 2025.
The projected total cost, including professional fees, preliminaries etc. was funded by SSE Renewables, The Gannochy Trust, sportscotland, Scottish Rugby, Basil Death Trust, Aberfeldy RFC, Aberfeldy Golf Club (who also donated the site) and, via Perth & Kinross Council, the Community Led Local Development (CLLD) fund and United Kingdom Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF). A further anonymous donation was made by a company working locally.
TASC chairman Peter Howell said: “The Trustees started work on this project in 2021 and we are delighted to have reached this stage. It would be fair to say that the journey has not been easy. Towards completion of the initial planning process, our progress was hugely impacted by retrospective application of new 200 -year flood risk regulations which necessitated significant redesign of the building. As a result, we were obliged to appeal to our funders for additional time and money to complete the project. All funders have shown great patience and for this we offer our heartfelt thanks. We are particularly grateful to the funders who stepped up to increase funding awards: SSE Renewables via their Griffin & Calliachar Fund, The Gannochy Trust, and the CLLD and UKSPF funds via Perth & Kinross Council.
We should thank too, Jon Frullani Architect Ltd for their patience in handling multiple revisions of the building plans and their public-spirited approach to fees.
I should also mention the support we have received from local politicians: in particular, Councillors John Duff and Michael Williamson, John Swinney MSP, and Dave Doogan MP. I hope that we can now push forward to complete our project without bothering them again.”
The new clubhouse will be a single storey building with men’s and women’s changing rooms, showers, toilets and meeting rooms, a bar/restaurant and areas for leisure and lifestyle events. The facilities will be available to all local amateur sports clubs and to the public.
The Trustees look forward to providing a modern community clubhouse which will benefit all Aberfeldy folk and visitors to the area.

26/11/2024

Ambitious plans for future of freshwater pearl mussels in the Cairngorms National Park - Freshwater pearl mussels are one of our most important and endangered species and populations have been facing a steep decline. In response, the Park Authority is working with partners and land managers to develop strategies which will secure a brighter future for the species. As their name suggests, the mussels are found in our freshwater rivers and they play a crucial role in improving the water quality of rivers such as the Spey and the Dee, filtering up to 50 litres of water a day which benefits a range of other species, including salmon, trout and otters.
Working closely with the Spey Fisheries Board and the Spey Catchment Partnership, the Park Authority are developing plans to move threatened populations of pearl mussels from the main stem of the River Spey to safer habitats in the upper tributaries of the river. Subject to licencing, it is hoped this work could begin as early as spring 2025.
Meanwhile on the River Dee, innovative techniques such as eDNA monitoring are being used to identify remnant populations and help pinpoint where action is needed. Led by the James Hutton Institute, this work is taking place following a report, commissioned by NatureScot and the Park Authority through the Dee Catchment Partnership, which revealed an approximate 90% reduction in the population of freshwater pearl mussels in the River Dee since 2002. The decline is thought to be caused primarily by the devastating effects of Storm Frank in 2015, where the violence of the storm not only swept much of the population away but also tore up the riverbed, leaving it highly unstable for mussels to anchor on. The current condition of the Dee makes it unsuitable for translocation of the mussels and alternative approaches are being considered.
A feasibility study commissioned by the Park Authority and undertaken by the James Hutton Institute has suggested that conservation breeding could be a suitable step towards reinforcing the mussel population on the Dee. As pearl mussels take five to ten years to reach maturity, this will form part of a long-term Cairngorms freshwater pearl mussel recovery strategy, allowing time to work alongside land managers and the River Dee Trust to undertake extensive habitat restoration to prepare the River Dee for the adult mussels to be reintroduced.
Cairngorms National Park Authority board member and Director of Alba Ecology, Dr Peter Cosgrove, who led the team conducting the surveys, said: “The survey highlighted the devastating effects Storm Frank had on our pearl mussel population which is why this plan is so critical. Working with our highly experienced river partnership we will first work to safeguard the remaining freshwater pearl mussels and then we can work on population reinforcement. The good news is that extensive river restoration work is already underway and we will continue to build on that work going forward.”
Dee Catchment Partnership Manager and Freshwater Ecologist at the Hutton Institute, Dr Susan Cooksley, explains, “The freshwater pearl mussel is a highly sensitive indicator of a river's overall health. The recovery strategy that is proposed aims to support the species from all sides, protecting the existing mussels, restoring habitat and then reinforcing the population. The success of which will depend on river restoration efforts to ensure freshwater pearl mussels have healthy habitats in which to thrive.
“Catchment scale restoration is the key to resilient rivers where nature and people can thrive in the face of climate change. The Dee is leading the way with a range of ambitious projects throughout the catchment.
“The work already underway on the River Dee will prepare the way for future population reinforcements. This is being led by the River Dee Trust and Dee District Salmon Fishery Board and coordinated through the Dee Catchment Partnership, including the Cairngorms 2030 river restoration project and other initiatives.”
Work is also underway to establish the status of mussels on the South Esk and Don to inform the recovery strategy. Pearls on the brink: innovative action plan will safeguard and reinforce populations. Photo credit: Nick Baker, Alba Ecology Healthy Freshwater pearl mussel bed (c) Nick Baker, Alba Ecology Ltd.

Cancellation of Perth Christmas Lights Switch-On Event Weekend events - Unfortunately, after closely monitoring the weather forecasts and consulting with our suppliers, we've decided to cancel the Christmas Lights Switch-On Weekend activities on Saturday and Sunday due to safety concerns and potential difficulties with travel from outwith Perth. In particular, the yellow warning for strong winds which could pose a public safety risk with large structures like the stages.
We are also aware that with the wider amber and yellow weather warnings there are people who would otherwise be involved in supporting these events may be needed to provide responses to the impact of weather elsewhere in Perth and Kinross.
Perth’s Christmas Lights Switch-On event has been a staple of the city centre event calendar for many years and, barring Covid, this is the first time we have ever had to cancel it. Unfortunately, due to the timescales and costs involved, we will not be able to reschedule the event to an alternative date. However, the Christmas cabins and Santa Grotto will remain in place as advertised.
We regret and share the disappointment of everyone who was looking forward to the event. We’re sure you agree that safety must come first.

Perth and Kinross Council asked to take ownership of Drummond Arms Hotel, Crieff - Perth and Kinross Council’s Finance and Resources Committee is set to consider a proposal to transfer the former Drummond Arms Hotel in Crieff into Council ownership when they meet next week (20 November 2024). The Drummond Arms Regeneration Limited (DARL), the organisation established by the Crieff Community Trust to transform the building, have written to the Council Leader to offer the transfer at nil value.
The high-profile town centre building has lain empty since 2006 fallen increasingly into disrepair as no commercial buyer could be found, before the community group acquired the building. Unfortunately, while DARL have undertaken a significant amount of work since taking ownership of the building to assess, secure, clear and make it safe, their most recent structural survey revealed that the structural elements and timbers have continued to deteriorate significantly. The current condition of the building has also led to a Dangerous Buildings Notice being served at the end of October requiring the roof structure, chimneys and high street facing dormer windows to be made safe.
DARL have concluded that they have exhausted all funding options and are unable to meet the requirements of the Dangerous Buildings Notice or continue to operate beyond March 2025.
Councillor Grant Laing, Leader of Perth and Kinross Council, said: "This is a decision of last resort. The community group had great ambitions for the building, but unfortunately have not been able to deliver on these. There’s a real risk that if DARL goes into liquidation still owning the building that the ensuring legal procedures would leave the future of the site in question for many, many more years. If committee supports the request to transfer the building title to the Council this also allow us to protect public safety and bring an end to the lengthy saga of the Drummond Arms. The condition of the building means that the only viable option left is demolition. While it is not the news local residents will have hoped for, it is the most practical solution to mitigate the risks posed by the deteriorating structure."
A report will be brought to a future committee about development options for the site after demolition, including using it for affordable housing.

Aberfeldy & District Rotary Club Citizen of the Year - As usual, the club received several deserving nominations for ‘Citizen of the Year’. This year, the honour went to May Brown. May was born and educated in Edinburgh, but after graduating from Edinburgh
University, left Auld Reekie (with a young family) initially to farm near Fortingall. Subsequently she worked as a Veterinary Secretary/Assistant at the practice of Young and Harbit. May thoroughly enjoyed her job, especially farm visits, and stayed for 26 years.
May is keenly interested in preserving the culture and heritage of the area, which was Gaelic–speaking as late as the early 20th century, and this led her to join the Aberfeldy Gaelic Choir. She also sang at charity events, including Highland Nights run by Hector Campbell at Aberfeldy Town Hall, where she met her future husband, Alan. For the last thirteen years May has been resident singer at The Vale of Atholl Pipe Band Highland Nights in Pitlochry. These nights, compered by Alan, fund instruments and uniforms for young band members.
Over the years, May has devoted much time to charitable organisations; she became a member of the Fabric Group which raised funds for Dalweem Care Home; she worked with Dr Dot Weaks OBE to set up a Dementia Carers’ Group; and joined Aberfeldy Old People's Welfare Association run by Angus Stewart. Eventually May became president of this association (renamed Aberfeldy Age Concern) and with, she recalls, “an amazing committee”, organised monthly musical and speaker events for over 20 years in addition to theatre outings and Christmas parties.
In 2009, Aberfeldy Gaelic Choir was going through a difficult time; it was without a conductor and losing members. May agreed to become Conductor and Musical Director and face the challenge of building a group of sufficient size and musical balance to compete again in the Royal National Mod. By 2012, May thought they were ready to enter the Margrat Duncan Competition in Dunoon. They were indeed ready – the choir won all three trophies and May was awarded the Conductor’s Silver Baton donated by Malcolm Appleby. This feat was repeated at Inverness in 2014 and despite strong competition from larger choirs with native Gaelic speakers, the Aberfeldy Choir has gone on to win the Royal National Mod Music Trophy on five occasions and brought home silverware from Provincial Mods and competitions in Stirling, Perth, Mull and Aberfeldy. May attributes their success as a non–native speaking group to the dedication of the Choir and their Gaelic Tutor Gilliain Macdonald. But patently May’s 15 years at the helm has been a key factor in this small Choir’s remarkable success. For this labour of love, let alone her years of selfless charitable work, she is a worthy recipient of the accolade, ’Citizen of the Year.’
May takes every opportunity (this opportunity included) to stress the importance of the Gaelic Choir to Aberfeldy as an embodiment of its traditions and history. She hopes it will continue to flourish. So, if you can sing, you will be very welcome – no fluent Gaelic required.
