We have some exciting news - the late, great David McKee was working on new Elmer stories before he passed away in 2022, and with the help of his family and good friend Marysia Milewski we are proud to bring the first, ‘Elmer and the White Bear’, to the world next year 🌈🐘🐻‍❄️

You can read more about the story behind this in The Observer (link in stories) and see some of David’s preliminary sketches and drawings too, which Marysia used to create the art for the book.

Marysia Milewska, the illustrator of Elmer and the White Bear says of the book, “I am so grateful and deeply moved to have had the special honour of illustrating Elmer and the White Bear. I am humbled by the trust and confidence in my illustrations shown by all in the Andersen team, but above all, I treasure my close and enduring friendship with David McKee. What an extraordinary journey it has been walking in David’s footsteps! May Elmer continue to resonate with tomorrow’s children the way he has with all of ours.”

David’s children Chuck, Brett and Chantal have collectively said, “We’re really excited that Andersen Press are able to bring Elmer and the White Bear to the world, and continue to share dad’s stories. This one was obviously an important book for Dad, he was concerned to get the environmental message right, and being illustrated by his dear friend Marysia. It’s a beautiful story that has been gorgeously and sensitively completed.”

Entries are open now until 10 November, we can’t wait to see how creative children around the UK are, and celebrate with them at Buckingham Palace next year.

David McKee, 1935 – 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of David McKee, beloved author and illustrator for children, and creator of iconic children’s books Elmer, Not Now, Bernard and Mr Benn. David died surrounded by his family, following a short illness in the South of France, where he has spent a lot of time in recent years; he was 87. All at Andersen Press hope his spirit lives on for many more generations through his joyful, heartfelt stories.

‘I am devastated by the sudden death of my best friend David McKee. His was a singular voice and a shining light in children's books that highlighted inclusivity, diversity and parts of our world that are not always present in publishing for children. His classic books include Elmer, Two Monsters and Not Now, Bernard, amongst many, many others, have become part of the canon of children’s literature, and we hope will be enjoyed by children for many more generations to come. Not only was I fortunate to be his publisher, he was also a wonderful friend, and he will be missed by many more people than he could ever imagine. My thoughts, and those of everyone at Andersen Press, are with his family and many friends around the world.’
