The Klaus Flugge Salon: JP Rose’s Birdie

The Klaus Flugge salons are a new initiative we’re running to celebrate our founder and chairman Klaus Flugge’s 90th birthday and welcome people to our new offices in Bloomsbury.

Following a sold-out first event, the second Klaus Flugge Salon is now on-sale - DETAILS IN STORIES / LINK IN BIO

The events are open to anyone from the public who wants to meet others in the publishing industry, enjoy a glass of wine and listen to an author or illustrator talking about their work. They are a celebration of all that is good about the world of children’s publishing today and an opportunity to make new friends, learn about new books and discuss ideas without the toxicity of social media.

Limited to 30 tickets, the event costs £8 and ticket price includes a signed book by the featured creator and refreshments.

The second salon on Wednesday 26th February will feature author JP Rose talking about her deeply personal novel Birdie, inspired by her own life as a child of adopted parents in 1970s Yorkshire, where she braved racism and began her lifelong love of horses.

Described by The Bookseller as ‘a future classic’ this is bound to be an emotional, enlightening evening with a fantastic speaker with many stories to tell.

Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis. All are welcome, old friends and new.

DETAILS:

Wednesday 26th February 2025, 6pm – 8.30pm

Venue: Andersen Press, 6 Coptic Street, London WC1H 1NH

Our Instagram takeover with illustrator Ali Pye today is about the emotional journey squirrel goes through in the book, and how that’s represented through Ali’s illustration responding to the text from France’s Tosdevin…

‘One of the most enjoyable aspects of illustrating Frances’ story was showing Squirrel’s emotional journey, moving from desire to disappointment, determination to joy, disillusionment to anger, despair to hope and then happiness again. There was lots of scope to show his feelings, which I tried to convey via his posture, eyes, whiskers and tail. Alongside Squirrel’s emotional changes the seasons are turning in the background, reflecting his state of mind. So when he first sees The Really Beautiful Thing the scenery is very autumnal, the first snow falls as he starts to realise its limitations, and then poor Squirrel is shivering out in the cold with his worthless, fading trinket. His friends bring back warmth and hope and ‘as the snow thawed, so did Squirrel’s sadness’. The last scene aims to portray that glowing, contented feeling of friendship = which is a really beautiful thing indeed!’

Our Instagram takeover from Ali Pye has been a huge hit - here’s a glimpse into her studio!

‘This is my studio where I worked on Frances’ words for The Really Beautiful Thing. Come on in, I’ve tidied up specially!

It’s a box room and my dog Saffy likes to be here too. Here are the materials I used to create Squirrel and his world - my favourite Koh-I-Noor Progresso 8b graphite sticks, soft pastel and monoprint textures, brought together in Photoshop on a Wacom Cintiq. The Cintiq has a lovely big screen you can draw directly onto. You can see the books and images that inspire me, and quite a few things that wouldn’t be out of place in Mr Wolf’s Emporium - a teapot that leaks, a tapestry that everyone else in my family hates, and a brass knick knack that I got when I earned my first royalties. I bought it as a joke that is justifiably only amusing to me - I can now say I’ve bought a yacht through my illustrations - ha!

I hope you’ve enjoyed this peep into my studio. See you tomorrow!’

Day 3 of our Ali Pye takeover, celebrating ‘The Really Beautiful Thing’ written by Frances Tosdevin…
💎🐿️💖
Here’s Ali on her favourite spread from the book:

‘This is my favourite scene from the book, written so beautifully by Frances Tosdevin, shown here as a very early sketch and the final image. It’s when Squirrel’s been through his journey, mirrored by the winter’s passing, and everything is blooming again.

He’s learned to value all the little things that make life special: beautiful skies, sparkly stars, fragrant flowers, and the love and support of his friends. For the early sketches, I like to work in Photoshop because I can quickly sketch, reshape or move elements of the image as I think about the composition of the page.

Most of the line work here is drawn in graphite pencil, then scanned and coloured in Photoshop, and you can see a bit of my favourite monoprint texture towards the bottom of the sky.’

It’s starting to feeling festive at Andersen Press this week, with Christmas trees going up and fairy lights being hung - starting to think about some of our gorgeous Christmas titles, starting with the brilliant TINY REINDEER by .naylor.ballesteros and thinking back to his Instagram takeover a few Christmases ago…
naylor.ballesteros :

These are some early sketches for Tiny Reindeer, two of which developed into finished illustrations and a couple which fell by the wayside.

In essence the original story wasn’t very different from the published version, but my editor Sue Buswell rightly suggested we needed to hint at a little of the girl’s life and feelings along the way and why she really wanted a tiny reindeer, even though she doesn’t actually appear until the end. It was tricky to imply what her world was like without it overshadowing or distracting from Tiny Reindeer’s story but I hope we judged it right.

I suggested other ideas while we were developing it, like a parallel story of a parent lost in a snowstorm or something who manages to get home at the end, or Tiny Reindeer turns into a wooden carving and we wonder if it’s all just a dream, but these extra story strands got a bit complicated and it lost its way a little so thankfully we pared it back down to its festive adventure essentials. You sometimes have to go and bark up lots of wrong trees though.

❄️Tiny Reindeer by Chris Naylor-Ballesteros is out now!
