What has this photo have to do with Vet On Set??

Well.....

Our job is to risk assess and prevent accidents from happening on set when animals are around.

Vet on Set were in action monitoring a TV commercial this week and lunchtime arrived.

Part of the lunch was containers of fresh fruit including lots of grapes.

As you may or may not know grapes are poisonous to dogs and even one grape can cause kidney failure for some dogs.

It is often the case that the production crew, actors, camera crew and all the people involved in the filming are not aware.

This is why we are there.

We asked everyone after finishing their lunch to make sure that all grapes were discarded properly and not dropped on the floor etc before the dog entered for filming.

This is why Welfare Monitoring on set is necessary. Filming is stressful with time pressures for the team, they don't have head space to check for dangers for the animals involved.

Occasionally dogs need to work around drones on set.

So always a good idea to do some drone familiarisation

Could an Eccles cake kill a Greyhound?

You might think this is an odd question... but apparently this was a storyline on Coronation Street this week.

The answer is yes. Grapes, raisins, sultanas, and currants (the main ingredient in Eccles Cakes) are toxic to dogs. With most substances there are safe and unsafe doses, but Grapes are different. Some dogs can suffer severe kidney damage after ingesting very small amounts of Grapes or dried fruit while others will be absolutely fine. Sadly it is impossible to know which dogs will be affected and once there are signs of kidney damage it is too late to treat them.
Veterinary Poisons Information Service advise treatment with emesis (making your dog sick), intravenous fluids, and blood tests to monitor kidney function is any more than one grape or raisin is eaten. They admit this is probably overcautious, but as yet they can't establish a safe level of ingestion.
