Rarely are we ever privy to the conversations in the Heavenlies. We might cry out and ask God "why me?" but we may not always receive a response there and then. A revelation may come long after the trial or the triumph. We may never receive revelation as to why we went through some things.

Can you imagine having all you consider and class as "wealth" and losing it all one by one? How would you respond?

Here's a brief overview of Job. Next week we will look at 4 key lessons we can learn from this man of God and how these lessons are still relevant to us today.

RIGHTEOUS
Job was a "righteous and blameless" man who "feared God and shunned evil". He was a man of complete integrity. Even through all his trials, Job refused to curse God and die; a suggestion from his wife. Job's response was grief but he worshipped.

WEALTHY
He was the "greatest man among all the people of the East". This wealth was evident among his family. Job had 7 sons and 3 daughters, 7000 sheep, 3000 camels, 500 teams of oxen, and 500 female donkeys. He also had many servants.

TESTED
Satan believed that Job was only faithful because God had placed a "hedge around him, his household and everything he has". God granted Satan permission to test Job's faith by taking away all he had but forbade Satan from laying a finger on Job.

โ€œI will bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall CONTINUALLY be in my mouthโ€
Psalm 34:1

Continually offer up the SACRIFICE of praise from the fruit of YOUR lips.

When you open your mouth, situations change.

How can we sing the Lordโ€™s song in a strange land?

We cannot worship based on our situation.

Godโ€™s power transcends your environment and situation.

God is able to do exceedingly, abundantly above all you could ask or think according to the POWER THAT WORKETH IN YOU.

If you work, He can work. If you reach up, He will reach down.

There is nothing you can change about tomorrow by worrying. In fact, you waste time by worrying and also affect your overall mood.

Ever heard the verse that says "cast your cares" on the Lord "for He cares for you"? Well, this is another version of that.

HAPPY WEDNESDAY

God truly loves us. He has shown a vested interest in our betterment and well-being. In other words, God has loved us long before we were God-conscious. This friend that sticks closer than a brother, enables us to be friendly and is himself our Lord, saviour, brother and best friend.

A man who has friends must himself be friendly, But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

Have you ever found yourself worrying about the future, your plans and what your next step will be? Did you know God has declared that He has plans of peace for us and a future filled with hope? (Amplified version).

Sometimes it's hard to 'let go and let God' lead in all areas of our lives. Take some time out to meditate on Jeremiah 29:11 today and know that God has your back.

19/02/2022

THE REGISTER OF WORSHIP (Part 2)

When my 11-month year old son wants to show affection, he will often smack his lips together. There are other times that he will want to express joy and will place his forehead on my forehead. Soon after, he will begin a shout and will expect me to reciprocate with a shout of my own and we will get louder and louder togetherโ€ฆ

The reality is the words that we speak are often the tip of the iceberg when it comes to expressing a feeling or a sentiment. Sometimes words donโ€™t fully capture how we feel. Which is why Jesusโ€™ tears meant so much. Jesusโ€™ tears expressed his love for Lazarus, the tears were on a lower register. In music, a high register can be likened unto your head voice, the head voice is when you sing through the larynx and the nose. However, the low register is when you sing with the chest, or diaphragm. In oration, which could be political speeches, speeches in the court of law and so on, the lower register is thought to be where a speaker sounds most authentic, it is the pitch within a voice which usually indicates that a person is not lying. Could groans be a lower register of sadness? A shout, a lower register of happiness? Tears a lower register of grief? There are responses that are non-verbal that speak more than any words we can think of.

I am no Luther Vandross but will often sing when putting my son to sleep. I might do the occasional lullaby, but worship songs usually feature. I have noticed that if I am not getting into the song, he knows. When I am not worshipping with the words, he knows. I have found that he will continue to be unsettled and will not go to sleep when it is not authentic, but when I worship first and sing after, there will be a smile on his face and 9 times out of 10 he will settleโ€ฆ

Instinctively, we know when worship is just singing. We know it when we hear it from others and when we hear it from ourselves. There have been times when I have heard talented singers do amazing runs, using vibrato and all the vocal acrobaticsโ€ฆ excellence was present, but there was no worship. On the other hand, I have heard singers within church with โ€˜tryingโ€™ voices, Iโ€™ve heard singing that has been completely off-key, even discordant, but the register was aligned with heaven. It is that sound that usherโ€™s people into the presence of God. We know the difference. One is a performance; the other is coming from a place of truth. Truth cannot be faked; true worship cannot be faked.

Q: How much of our faith is from a place of performance?

In other words, how much of our Christian walk is for the approval of others?

THE REGISTER OF WORSHIP (Part 1)

Disclaimer: this is not an admission of daddy issues (at least I think it isnโ€™t), but I donโ€™t personally remember my dad ever saying, โ€˜I love youโ€™. He is a man of few words. So, when he wanted to express the sentiment, he showed me. His love was action-based. Iโ€™d never heard it, but Iโ€™ve felt it in many of his famous bear hugs, or in the look of respect Iโ€™d see in his eyes, or in a smile that meant he was proud of me, or in his vice-grip handshake. I think if heโ€™d been more liberal with his โ€˜I love yousโ€™, I may have valued words over deeds.

In the Lazarus story (an account of a man who died and was miraculously brought back to life by Jesus), there are many proofs of Jesusโ€™ love for his friend. In the beginning of the first chapter, the Bible says that โ€œwhen Jesus saw (Mary) weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled.โ€ He does this again after hearing the Jews question both his ability to heal Lazarus and his love for his friend. Finally, we are shown how much Jesus loved Lazarus by the shortest scripture in the Bible โ€“ โ€œJesus weptโ€. We donโ€™t know how long this weeping lasted, itโ€™s a two-word sentence, but it couldโ€™ve been a two-hour long weeping session. Nonetheless, Jesusโ€™ love for Lazarus is undeniable, not because he professed with his mouth necessarily, but it was through his actions that his love was shown.

It is said by psychologists that 70-93% of all communication is non-verbal. The proof of this is if we look at children. Babies cannot speak when they are very young, but they can emote. They have the toolkit for language acquisition, or the in-built software to speak a language, but before they do, they click and coo and cry and shout. They find a way to communicate for survival.

Principle 1: Where worship is concerned, being articulate is not always important. It is what is communicated beyond the words that matter.

JOY (Part 3 of 3)

Being joyful does not mean being happy all the time. This would betray the wide spectrum of emotions that we have been given by God to interpret everything that happens to us in this life. Happiness would not be appropriate at a time when we are expected to mourn with our loved ones, neither would anger suffice after a great success. Happiness can be like the ebb and flow of the waves, but joy is at the bedrock. Joy is a deep knowing that is as sure as the firmament at the bottom of ocean floor. It is that which holds everything else up.

David the warrior-poet, tells us in Psalm 30 verse 5 that, โ€œweeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.โ€ Here, David is illustrating the fact that emotions are short-lived. Much like the moon they wax, they wane. We move from happiness to sadness, anger to fear, trust to distrust, surprise to anticipation, but never live too long in any. Whilst understanding all these states, Christian joy provides us with balance.

Balance comes along with Christian maturity, through a life that has been tested and tried without becoming cynical, bitter, or jaded. Where the individual has accumulated countless testimonies that speak of the faithfulness of God in a variety of contexts. Where the relationship with God has moved from theory to practical, where the Christian, now recognises the โ€œgoodness of Godโ€ฆ (right here), in the land of the living,โ€ rather than focussing solely on the hereafter. In some ways it is wrapped up in the acknowledgement that the Apostle Paul makes, where โ€œto live is Christ, and to die is gain.โ€ With the joy of the Lord, we have hope, that hope brings peace, that peace carries no shame, but gives us real perspective.

JOY (Part 2)

Have you ever sat down to read the bible and found yourself tearing up? Or, listened to a worship song, only to have your whole being flooded with thoughts of gratitude? Perhaps youโ€™ve prayed and have felt the weight of heaven meet you at your bedside? We can also become overcome with similar feelings in an encouragement a friend gives us. This friend may or may not realise that at that moment theyโ€™ve become a weathervane for the Spirit, and being in tune with a higher frequency, have given us a word that was on time and for us alone. It may be hard to prove, but can we deny that something has happened? Often, that something is โ€“ joy.

According to Pastor John Piper of the Desiring God ministry, โ€œChristian joy is a good feeling in the soul, produced by the Holy Spirit, as he causes us to see the beauty of Christ in the word and in the world.โ€ This joy is something that is produced by the Holy Spirit which means that it is a gift. You canโ€™t buy this gift, itโ€™s given. Neither can you sell this gift, it is not of this world. In some sense, this gift is one of second sight.

What do I mean by second sight? Well, how many gifts to we get that give us the ability to see things, situations, circumstances with a deep understanding that the Christ of the bible, the same Christ that is within us, has our backs. The sacrifice of Christ and all that that signifies, is the deepest โ€˜why?โ€™ we will ever encounter. When an athlete goes through an intense training regime and strict food regimen, it is down to his โ€˜why?โ€™ The same reason he puts his body through so much agony is directly related to the depth of his โ€˜why?โ€™ Or when a writer goes without food for a while until the first draft is complete. You may find that her โ€˜why?โ€™ is deep and goes to the very core of her person.

When the promises of God through Christ have been internalised, our โ€˜why?โ€™ or our reason to keep going is too deep to be uprooted. It is this โ€˜why?โ€™ that gives us strength, much like the athlete and the writer, but so much more. So, when the Bible says, โ€œthe joy of the Lord is your strength.โ€ It means that our joy, our approach to everything life throws at us is anchored in the depth of Godโ€™s promises for us.

Let us re-examine our โ€˜whys?โ€™ Let us remind ourselves that the joy of the lord makes us strong. Let us realise that we can see through it all, because our โ€˜why?โ€™ stretches far into eternity.

JOY (Part 1)

We are now more than one month deep into the new year, with the Christmas season well and truly behind us. Some of us began with a fast, others โ€˜Veganuaryโ€™, while some have focused on making good of their new yearโ€™s resolutions. With all this forward momentum let us not forget the deep sentiment found in the Christmas account. Itโ€™s true that weโ€™ve re-heard the account in the gospel of Matthew or re-read the story in the gospel of Luke. But what we should always carry with us regardless of the season is the fact that in both accounts, from both synoptic gospels, joy is present.

If we look at the passage carefully, it is possible to break down this joy into four parts โ€“ 1. the joy in hearing the message, 2. the joy in anticipating the event, 3. the joy of the event itself and 4. the response of the recipient(s) after the event. 1. After hearing the message from the angel, the shepherds were filled with excitement and elation. 2. They โ€œhurried to the village in anticipation and found Mary and Joseph.โ€ 3. The shepherdโ€™s told them all what they heard, when they left the family and 4. they responded by glorifying and praising God after seeing Jesus Christ. The joy that the wise men felt would have also had a similar order. Now what is clear in both accounts is gratitude. Both the shepherds and the wise men were joyful just to be in the presence of the anointed one. They were honoured to be chosen for such a moment.

Are we still joyful after hearing and re-hearing the message? Do we eagerly anticipate an encounter with our God and are we full of joy during prayer, the reading of the scriptures and in free worship? What is our response after this encounter, if any? The above questions are for us to answer within ourselves.

If we are left uninspired after the season past, no longer struck by the miracle that has found its way to us. We should be asking ourselves, why?

Hidden Identity โ€“ Part 2

โ€œWhat is Man?โ€

The above question was asked by David in the Old Testament and was answered by Jesus in the New Testament. In Luke 4 verse 4, Jesus states, โ€œthat man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of Godโ€. Jesus was pointing out to the tempter that man is not only made alive or animated by food. Physical need is only one human requirement. There are also needs that go beyond or above the physical โ€“ the metaphysical. Think about what makes you happy, joyful or fulfilled. Itโ€™s never just food, it could be a good book, good art, good music, worship, prayer and so on. Jesus recognised that there are โ€œdeeper depthsโ€ to us as human beings. We are more complex than we appear โ€“ in other words, we have layers.

There are about three ways that these layers have been thought about within the church and beyond. Some believe in the trichotomy of human beings โ€“ that we are body, spirit, and soul. Others believe in the dichotomy of humans โ€“ that we are soul and body. And there are some who believe in Monism, which is the body without the soul and spirit. Usually, Christians lean towards the first two definitions. This is relevant because, when thinking about a family member, friend, or acquaintance, we donโ€™t picture a body without a personality. We acknowledge both. Understanding that personhood transcends skin, bone and brain. The physical brain is not the non-physical mind. The mind is the consciousness, the intellect, the emotions. Therefore, when the Bible speaks of the โ€˜soulโ€™, it is often talking about the complete person โ€“ the physical and non-physical intertwined.

Which brings us to one of the purposes of the Holy Spirit, which is to transform each one of us so that Godโ€™s will and purposes for this world is done. The very fruit of the Spirit are characteristics of a transformed person. According to Galatians 5 verses 22-23, โ€œthe fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control,โ€ these are all characteristics of the spirit of man that has undergone transformation through an interaction with the Spirit of God.

So, what is man? Itโ€™s complicated. We have layers. And we need more than the physical to live.

Hidden Identity โ€“ Part 1

The gospel of Luke tells us that Jesus was, โ€œin the power of the Spiritโ€ when venturing into the crucible of the Judean wilderness. Here, Jesus prayed and fasted during a period of unrelenting and exhausting temptation. In the wilderness, we can see that the Spirit of the Lord acted like a cloak for the spirit of man. Godโ€™s power became a covering to his servant who listened and responded to Him.

The reality is, the human spirit is a fighting spirit within us all, that same spirit which helps us to dig deep when things are tough. This fight in us is beneficial when we are confronted with difficulty, but can become a barrier when we need to be vulnerable before God. To really listen and do what God has asked us to do would mean dropping our fists and surrendering to the Spirit of God. Once the fists go down, the spirit of God will respond. The scripture in Romans 8 verse 16, backs this up, when the apostle Paul says, โ€œFor his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are Godโ€™s childrenโ€ (NLT), or as the KJV states, โ€œThe Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of Godโ€ฆโ€

Bearing witness is defined as showing that something exists or is true. In other words, when we stop fighting, the Spirit of God will show us things as they truly are. Which is the fact that He exists and that we belong to God. There are times when the spirit in us, needs to be reawakened or reminded. The reality is, once the Spirit of God is one with our spirit, our hidden identity becomes visible.

Why is this?

It's because our identity is hidden within God himself.

Do it for the culture โ€“ Part 4

When God appoints us, he sees us under the anointing, covered by the sacrifice of the Son. It is under his covering so to speak that we are animated by His Spirit to do his will. The moment we begin to see ourselves in partnership with God, low self-perception will be easier to fight off. We then recognise that we are not just a man, or just a woman, or just an older person, or just a youth for that matterโ€ฆwe are far more powerful than we can imagine. The scripture in Joel shows us what people will and can do when in partnership with heavenโ€ฆ Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.

We have the power to see (thatโ€™s vision), the power to speak (thatโ€™s prophecy). Prophecy is not just a foretelling of the not yet, prophecy is an ability to speak to the culture you are placed within. If we think about the Spirit that animated John the Baptist, it was a spirit to tell it as it is. John spoke openly of the fact that King Herod was unfaithful with his brotherโ€™s wife. When confronted by the Pharisees, he told them to their faces that they were a group of snakes, because of how they were operating in Judea at the time. So, prophecy, is also speaking truth to the powerful, which in some ways, is speaking directly to โ€˜the cultureโ€™.

So, by the Holy Spirit, we are given the ability to see whatโ€™s wrong with the culture and to speak prophetically, in other words, to call it out. Under the anointing of divine partnership, we are called to cultivate the culture. What do we mean by cultivate? Well, the word โ€˜cultivateโ€™ at its root means to prepare, to upturn, to make ready for seed. This is what speaking prophetically does. If you recall, what did John the Baptist say his purpose was, it was to be, โ€˜โ€œA voice of one calling in the wilderness and to โ€˜Prepare the way for the Lord... [and to]โ€ฆ make straight paths for Him.โ€™โ€ By speaking prophetically, John the Baptist was upturning, making ready the soil of โ€˜the cultureโ€™ and preparing it for seed.

And what is the seed? The seed isnโ€™t an โ€˜itโ€™, the seed is a โ€˜whoโ€™, the good news resides in a person...

Our saviour Jesus Christ, the anointed one.
