Going big with planters and curating a mix of striking blooms will instantly elevate them to wow, introducing a modern edge to traditional planting. As plant guru Sarah Raven shows, bold is best and a giant pot planted with a stunning trio is a real headturner. For a designer touch, magnify the drama by taking inspiration from the container material itself. This galvanised tub is fabulously mirrored in the pewter-tinged leaves of heuchera ‘Pools of Purple’, set off against toning purple nemesia and dazzling African daisies. Check out more container planting ideas in Sarah’s new book, A Year Full of Pots, £27 sarahraven.com

The colour blue and its calming qualities are being championed in new season outdoor living collections. We suggest using different hues of it as accents on rugs, walls, planters and cushions while keeping furniture pale, rounded and simple. A living green screen and a hanging egg chair will create a setting that’s serene, inviting and tranquil. Photo: Malmo Double Egg Chair, £899 dobbies.com

Plant a summer stunner
Brightly coloured flowers, heady scents and the melodious buzz of bees are delightful signals heralding the arrival of summer! Few flowers can rival the flamboyant spectacle of zinnias, and if there’s an easier flower to grow, we’d like to know about it! Now is the opportune moment to sow them in your garden; flowers will be powering up in just a few weeks. Renowned for their zany shades of pinks, reds and purples, zinnias offer a vibrant option. For those seeking a more tranquil garden ambiance, the fresh hues of pale whites and greens are equally enchanting. Whether filling gaps in a sun-kissed border, getting on famously with grasses or taking centre stage in a container, zinnias will grace your garden with their fabulously zany flowers all summer long. They thrive in hot dry conditions, so grow them in well-drained soil in a sunny border. If you have heavy soil, just add plenty of grit and peat-free compost before sowing. Water once a week.

Fancy a climber? Select plants that flower with minimal pruning and fit your space – nobody needs a high-maintenance diva! Smaller variety clematis are a top choice and need little attention – usually a single chop each year. They’ll quickly cover a trellis without getting out of control. Try Clematis ‘Pernille’ as seen here.

We love Korean mint!
Visually glorious, attractive to bees and butterflies and fast growing, Korean mint (also known as Agastache rugosa) can be grown directly outside now, as long as you choose a sunny spot. The seeds (£2.50/150 seeds jekkas.com) are titchy, so press them gently into the soil but don’t sprinkle more soil on top. Keep moist (pop on a cloche if need be) and they’ll germinate within three weeks. Both the minty aniseed leaves and bright purple flowers are edible – use them to make tea or to pep and pretty up salads and desserts.

Pots with plus points
Paved areas such as patios and driveways invariably lack accessible soil for planting large plants in. Turbo-sized pots are the obvious answer, but ones that deliver on all levels – price, size, looks and longevity – can often be hard to find. These ones tick all of the aforementioned as well as some extras; on trend but timeless? Check! Strong but lightweight? Check! In a versatile colour that would suit most gardens? Jackpot!

There’s more to the chicory plant than just bitter leaves (and Camp coffee liquid –just Google it!), because if that’s your experience of eating them then they’ve either been too old or under-cooked. Freshly picked young leaves taste sweet when eaten raw in salads, while the more mature ones, when sautéed in butter until they wilt, take on a vibrant caramelised flavour and taste divine with a grating of Parmesan cheese! The plant grows from 60-100cm high and has charming lilac flowers all up the stems from July to September. You can enjoy the blooms in salads or freeze in ice cubes for adding a decorative touch to cold drinks. It’ll be happy in a pot in a sunny spot.
