New fresh tape means new records. What to record next?

Today I took delivery of a batch of 1/4” tape. For quite a few years I’ve had the idea of releasing music on reel to reel. Straight from the master. I used to transfer 1/4” masters for an archiving company and was blow away by how good they sound. Getting a batch of reels so that I could get started has been one of the hurdles. Now I just need the machines to make copies. I used to have a 1/2” 2 track which some of my albums are on. Now begins the hunt for that………. All Things Analogue

Listen up mic nerds……. I had the pleasure of testing out these little beauties recently from . If you have ever had a conversation with me about what mic to buy I always recommend their bm9. On a recent visit to collect my freshly, un-dented rca 77 i was shown their new pronto type ribbon mic. It fit in the palm of my hand! There was something so intriguing about it. So on went the head phones and I had a listen. I was really blown away by how good it sounded. At the same time we listened to a few pretty classic ribbon mics that I was interested in hearing. I couldn’t quite believe that this little ribbon was coming out on top! So, I took a pair back to ATA to do some recording. They are amazing. Clear, well rounded and with the right smattering of character. Big bonus is they are light and easy to place/use. All the people I’ve played the snippets to have unanimously gone, “how much? I’ll take one”.

New meet old. I loved the original artwork for Love Of The Brave. It’s basically a reel to reel box. Since 2011 more than a few albums have featured this same reel to reel box so it was time to change it up. We went back to original artist for a specially commissioned new cover for ATA001 Love Of The Brave. Pre order now and you will get the original 2011 cd album. Link in bio

It’s such a relief to have this as the ying to my studio Yang. As my old allotment neighbour used to say “paradise for only £1 a week”. His maths were a bit off I’d say it’s closer to £1.80.

Think my tape machine’s batteries are running low….. actually had the machine on 7.5ips by accident instead of my usual 15ips. Sounds mega tho. Think I’m going to have to do a half speed version of this library record that we are working on.

My week in Work Money Death postage carnage! Time for a tidy. That was one tough week. I had problems with mailers. Problems with my label printer. Thankfully managed to get on top of it without too many tears and all the records have been sent out. Time to start on next weeks orders. It may be the less glamorous side of running a label but I still love it. Hope you are enjoying the record

How is your Monday going? Mine is all about packing records. If you need some positive energy to move you into the week go and check out song of healing from our latest release from work money death. It is actually an excerpt from a 33minute improvisation that Tony and I recorded that started this whole album off. We tuned out instruments to a much more cosmically satisfying 432hz. I had a meditative bassline ready and we improvised whilst holding the idea of ‘healing’ in our minds. Yup. I will be releasing the full 33min version at some point.

I’m obsessed with plectrum bass sound! There are so many ways to get a sound. This session was recorded using my 62 precision through my 65 ampeg 12” flip top. It didn’t have enough of the click of my plectrum so I stuck it through my newly acquired astronic germanium eqs. What I love about revisiting these old tracks is how much I didn’t give a sh#t about what music I was making. I had the freedom and time to do whatever. I was mildly obsessed with the sound of Doowap at the time. Also, has another one of my favs, doublIng detuned guitar with baritone guitar. the batch of reels I’ve found my first demo of this track with me playing all the instruments. I am really tempted to get a mix together of it as there is something I really like about my shonky drumming. Jazz overdubs. The next Work Money Death album is shaping up to be a winner. I have read a few good articles about how Pharaoh Sanders approached those classic impulse recordings. He said the less we planned or rehearsed the better it sounded. So with us coming album all the tracks are first takes. No rehearsals. After our initial band sessions I’ve had some great musicians like @theoldschoolrecordingstudio help me build a bigger arrangement around our improvised pieces. A good day was had. Got a gig on Friday on double bass so getting some practice in before hand. @roncarterbassist on Roberta Flacks’s version of ‘Compared To What’ is how I measure where I’m at and today I’m not all that. I’ve let my practice slip so much over the last 10 years, often picking it up when I’ve got an album to record instead of keeping up a regular routine. It’s such a beautiful instrument and demands more commitment than I’ve been giving it. I can hear the lack of consistency in my playing and can feel the lack of stamina as I try to get though only a minute or so of this tune. Funny thing is I have no desire to be a virtuosic player just want to be constant and competent and that wouldn’t have taken much. Back on the mat though.
