What I love about revisiting these old tracks is how much I didn’t give a sh#t about what music I was making. I had the freedom and time to do whatever. I was mildly obsessed with the sound of Doowap at the time. Also, has another one of my favs, doublIng detuned guitar with baritone guitar. the batch of reels I’ve found my first demo of this track with me playing all the instruments. I am really tempted to get a mix together of it as there is something I really like about my shonky drumming. Jazz overdubs. The next Work Money Death album is shaping up to be a winner. I have read a few good articles about how Pharaoh Sanders approached those classic impulse recordings. He said the less we planned or rehearsed the better it sounded. So with us coming album all the tracks are first takes. No rehearsals. After our initial band sessions I’ve had some great musicians like @theoldschoolrecordingstudio help me build a bigger arrangement around our improvised pieces. A good day was had. Got a gig on Friday on double bass so getting some practice in before hand. @roncarterbassist on Roberta Flacks’s version of ‘Compared To What’ is how I measure where I’m at and today I’m not all that. I’ve let my practice slip so much over the last 10 years, often picking it up when I’ve got an album to record instead of keeping up a regular routine. It’s such a beautiful instrument and demands more commitment than I’ve been giving it. I can hear the lack of consistency in my playing and can feel the lack of stamina as I try to get though only a minute or so of this tune. Funny thing is I have no desire to be a virtuosic player just want to be constant and competent and that wouldn’t have taken much. Back on the mat though.
