There is something majestic about Avery Sunshine. Perhaps then in this week of all things Coronation it’s fitting that this regal artist that stands out amongst her peers, should rise to the pinnacle of the British Soul Chart with her latest single W8. The thing our panel loves about Avery, apart from her wonderful stage presence and artistry in abundance, it’s the song writing which is potentially most understated. The message of this song reminds us of the message of Queen Erykah’s iconic Bag Lady. The communique to wait could not be better timed in a fast evolving world where peace, quiet and stillness are at a premium. Stunning track and well worthy of its coveted No1 status, a fortnight after its release.
The Top 10 is typically high in quality. Angie Stone returns with a couple of singles ahead of her next album Love Language slated for 19th May. Song writing of the highest calibre on The Gym feat Musiq Soulchild. Two former No1s Melonyx and Lina Nikol slip down a few places but retain their top 10 status. Keep an eye on the highest new entry Amaria who teams up to great affect with Amber Navran of Moonchild infamy. Vocals, vibes and subtle horns make this one to watch. Reel Soul are back with another quality remix and are the second highest new entry. Mentions for Helen Bruner and Terry Jones for breaking into the top 10 with their track “I can’t call it” a victory for real soul.
Don’t shy away from the rest of the chart with 13 new entries and some fantastic tunes which will serve your personal playlist well. Special mention to Kek’ Star for the unusual feat of two remixes in the Top 30 on George Duke and Kem respectively.
To the artists and producers in the Top 30, all acknowledgement has to be good and warmly received for a genre that doesn’t always get the credit it deserves. For those not quite in the Top 30. it’s never been more difficult for our Panel to select 30 songs on a weekly basis with seemingly hundreds or tracks released every month. We acknowledge there are many great tracks not included.
