Miles Away Records is an independent record label based in London. The label’s aim is to celebrate sounds of disco, soul and boogie from around the world.

Devils in the detail 👹✍️

The design behind this release stems from a chat with our friend .vogel.

He said something along the lines of “why don’t you mix up the artwork a bit, make it more visually appealing”.

Initially I was a bit defensive, the teal green labels and house-bags hold a deep place in our visual identity but I felt that upping our game and creating a picture sleeve was defo something we could look at.

Enter .

I sent Jeremy the smallest of small images of Eugene. I think the size was like 78kbs. Not something which can be printed.

Somehow Jeremy worked his magic and came up with a solution.

He spent as much time working on the photo as he did on the rest of the design.

“I was going for a private-press meets 60s/70s euro picture sleeve kinda thing”

Things I want you to see - the hand-drawn gothic style border, the textured title type, the tiny tiny textures in the photo, the back cover layout, the boxed tracklisting, the colourway.

We’re so happy with how it turned out.

Announcing our final party of the year! 🎉🍾

People often ask us, “What kind of music do you play? Is it similar to what the label releases – rare soul, gospel, and disco?” Our answer? “It’s a party – we play music to make people dance.” From a 12-minute disco workout to 80 bpm dub and reggae, classic hip-hop, NYC salsa 45s, and 90s house and breakbeat – there’s no guidelines. No rules. It’s up to you.

That being said, we’re excited to welcome two DJs who truly embody this spirit: and . These two selectors bring a blend of styles across generations, each a force in their own right.

LEV is someone we’ve admired for a long time. A respected DJ and key figure in the next generation of soulful music, she’s known for her diverse style and vast musical knowledge. Meeting her one rainy afternoon at Crazy Beat Records in Essex confirmed our sense of her passion and dedication. Watching her journey over the past few years has been incredible, as she’s grown to play at iconic venues and festivals worldwide, sharing stages with legendary artists. Big up LEV!

Eddie Oxman, a legend in London’s Reggae revival scene, began his DJ journey in the late 70s and has been a cornerstone ever since. With deep experience alongside Reggae icons and work at iconic shops like Dub Vendor and Soul Jazz, Oxman’s vinyl collection and the energy he brings to his sets are unmatched. He’s truly one of the best in the game and a character we can’t wait for you to experience.

First solo Miles Away Broadcast in a minute—just us, straight tunes, random facts, and a bit of mumbled chat! Loved every bit of it ♥️♥️

Got through plenty of new releases that’ve come our way including .and.afla new album on , ‘s latest belter Ain’t Gonna by Goshawk ft (thanks .vogel ), new reissue 45 Pearly Queen – Quit Jive IN coming on - sounded heavy through the tannoys & Ade from Soho Radio dropped me off the new cut by the Royal Organ Duo covering White Lines ( 😂😂).

All this blended with our favs 45s, LP cuts and 12s from The Meadow Brothers, Nikki Giovanni, Shirley Nanette, Cortex, Family Choice, Marcia Griffiths & David Valentin.

Special mention to our release of the month: Roland Haynes’s Mind Games out on . Only ever knew the title track. An insanely good unreleased jazz-funk album. I played Ceta Theme Intro into Ceta Theme. Highly highly recommend 🔥🔥

NEW RELEASE ALERT: EUGENE SMILEY “YES ITS YOU”

Miles Away are thrilled to present the first-ever 7-inch vinyl reissue of the modern-soul classic “Yes It’s You” now backed with the original A-Side “We’re Lovers Day & Night”. Officially licensed from the Smiley estate and presented in brand new picture sleeve designed by the talented Jeremy Zombie.

Eugene Smiley had soul music running through his veins. His career began with The Mists (later to be known as The Visitors), who signed to Dakar Records in the late ‘60s. Under the mentorship of one Carl Davis, Eugene grew into a powerful musician, who would go on to tour with the likes Rufus Thomas, Bobby Womack, Al Green, the Stylistics, Eddy Kendricks and The Chi-lites.

“Yes Its You” was released in 1978, a recording that channelled a decade’s worth of commitment to the cause of performing and spreading quality soul music across America. A three-minute up-tempo modern soul groover which wouldn’t sound out of place in the Brunswick catalogue, replete with velvety harmony vocals, soaring strings and orchestral brasses which sink into a propellant 4/4 groove, supported by a rhythm section funkier than a mosquito’s tweeter.

👉 Patterson Twins - Let Me Be Your Lover

We first reissued this modern soul/crossover gem just over five years ago, in September 2019, marking our first official vinyl reissue. Licensed directly from the Twins themselves, who are still alive and kickin’.

The album initially gained attention for its beautiful extended version of “Gonna Find A True Love,” a long-coveted 45 on the UK soul scene (the debate still rages over whether the Bottom & Co version is superior). However, a deeper listen reveals “Let Me Be Your Lover” as an undeniably soulful and passionate album, and it’s been incredible to see it continue to resonate with listener and collectors worldwide.

👉 Lamont Butler - It’s Time For A Change

The second vinyl reissue we ever released was Lamont Butler – It’s Time For A Change. It took us two years of searching, calling every Lamont Butler in North Carolina (all 12 of them), and pestering strangers on Facebook. Then, one late winter night, we finally reached the Lamont Butler’s wife. “He’s out at the moment, can you call back later?” she said. “Erm… yeah, sure.”

What she didn’t realize was that I was calling from the UK, and “later” meant 2 a.m. our time. Undeterred, I stayed up and called again at 2 a.m. Lamont was initially a bit sceptical but intrigued. We ended up talking until 4 a.m., discussing the label, our vision, and all the details.

After a few more calls—and a hefty phone bill—we secured the rights. The rest, as they say, is history. It’s an album we’re incredibly proud to have on our label.

Any fans of Brit-Funk band Freeez out there? 🎶🥶🕵️

Well, this is Andy Stennett - keysmen in Freeez. The person responsible for co-writing global hits I.O.U & Southern Freeez along with loads of other killer tracks. Under the alias Laine August, Andy and created the electro pop tune Be My Friend which proudly sits on disc 2 of Miles Away: One 😊

Written during the I.O.U sessions, Andy & Holly conspired to create something a bit different, a bit of fun with more than a nod to each-other’s musical backgrounds. Shades of Freeez can be heard throughout with Holly’s vocals adding another dimension.

WE’RE THROWING AN ALL DAYER AT .uk 🌴🔥!!

On the 16th June we’re hosting an all dayer at the lovely spot All My Friends in Hackney Wick. Run by the same people who run , we love this spot and jumped at the chance to do a Sunday session here to continue our celebration of the release of Miles Away: One!

Anddd we’ve invited a bunch of friends down to help us celebrate!

1. is part of the next generation representing soulful music within the club & festival scenes and on radio. Recently making her Ibiza debut at Groove Theory as well as supported the likes of Kerri Chandler, Louie Vega, David Morales, Mood II Swing, Kon & STR4TA.
2. - We’re only just recovering from Alena’s set at our 5th birthday party back in Feb so we can’t wait for Alena to grace us with her deep soulful cuts once again.
3. - introducing good friend of the label and fantastic DJ and compiler Sam Don. Recently Sam compiled the killer comp Just A Touch and has now started his own label . Comfortable in a variety of styles, tempo and moods we know Sam’s gonna come packing some 🔥🔥
4. - One of the deepest heads when it comes to jazz/ latin jazz. You may remember Will as the percussionist with the hands of steel who played all night long at our 5th birthday. Well, he’s also a great DJ too!
5. - We caught Eliott’s set at Fabric when he was supporting Kirollus in Room 3 as part of the Disco Disco event and loved it! A purveyor of quality music you can expect the finest soul, disco, house cuts.
6. - A real rising star in the scene. Zouk specialist. Great DJ. Runs the excellent . Coaches Tennis. Is there anything Josh can’t do! Really chuffed Josh could come down and spin some records for us on the day!
7. - and finishing off the lineup is Miles Away label founder and compiler of Miles Away: One Dom.

Miles Away Records are proud to present our latest release Keep Holding On / You’re The Best by Savoir-Flair. PRE-ORDER NOW > https://bit.ly/3Rj2iJ7 In 1982 during the hot Texas summer months, Roger Boykin, John Miller and Cassandra Wright were working as session musicians at Precision Audio studios. They were put together to create soundtracks, jingles and idents for US TV commercials and, in what spare studio time the three of them had, would experiment with the studio equipment at their disposal - writing and developing what would become the Savoir-Flair sound. In these secret, after-hours sessions the three would create a staggeringly good private press 80s modern soul album. A flawless collection of tracks with every one of them hitting hard. It would be released on Roger’s own label SoulTex Records with the group touring locally. Alas though, this was to be their only album as Savoir-Flair disbanded a year later. The impact this album however can still be felt today with the 45 and LP becoming highly sought after amongst modern soul collectors around the world. Miles Away are pleased to present two of absolute stand-out tracks from this short lived group. Keep Holding On is a soulful-two-step-boogie-funk gem of a record with Cassandra Wright’s phenomenal vocals shining brightly throughout, sure-fire dancefloor killer. On the flip is You’re The Best, a beautiful flute-led arrangement that perfect underpins John Miller’s imposing vocal performance. Re-mastered and cut by the mighty people at Timmion Records in Finland. Available worldwide from the 7th October.

Rokk - Patience Teaser

Miles Away Records is proud to present it's first record, the 1975 classic 'Patience' by Rokk. Heavily influenced by Gil Scott-Heron's 'The Bottle' it is a cult dance floor anthem that has never been reissued as a stand alone single. This limited edition of 500 copies is sure to do swift business. Recorded in Los Angeles, the band Rokk whose roots lie in the 1964 meeting between James Dockery and Arthur Monday. La Marco Nesbit and Denny Lash later joined in the mid 70s and together they formed Rokk. They released one single for the Vee-Jay International label and recorded and album which lay in the vaults for over 30 years. Miles Away Records is the new label founded by DJ Dom Ore and will specialises in reissuing rare recordings from around the world on whichever format they deserve.
