In all the years working with charities and nonprofit organisations, I've never failed to be amazed at how powerful even the smallest of organisations is. With the right tools, even the smallest group of people can be as powerful and as prominent as the larger national and multinational organisations.

I've been scouring the links I've found over the years and collected a number of products charities can take advantage of to get online, almost all for free. Whether you're looking for a strong email service or free hosting for your website, I've listed some of my favourites over at https://www.nathanhawkes.co.uk/2022/07/getting-your-nonprofit-organisation-online/

Got any other products that you or your charity partners use? Head on down to the comments and let's discuss.

If you’ve been using WordPress, developed for WordPress, or looked into WordPress – or software development as a whole – you’ll likely have heard of the GNU General Public Licence or GPL. But what the hell is it? How does it apply to plugins and themes? And what is the difference between GPLv2 and GPLv3? Head on over to https://nhdev.uk/gpl and find out a little more.

Any website is only as good as the people behind it, even those built with WordPress. And things get more complicated when multiple people are working on it. So how can you keep your site running smoothly with many hands working on it? There are quite a few workaround tools that you can use, from user rights to internal notes to full collaborative editing tools. Visit https://nhdev.uk/manyusers for more information.

In 2014, Google announced that they were giving SSL certificates a small boost in SEO rankings, and this boost has been growing over the years. Since then, Google Chrome and other browsers now warn about accessing non-secure sites or sites with invalid SSL certificates.

Not all SSL certificates are suitable for all sites, though, so here's a helpful breakdown of the three main SSL types and which sites require them. Each list is not exhaustive, and they include all of the sites on the levels below them (an OV SSL certificate can be used on a DV SSL site, but a DV SSL certificate should not be used on an EV SSL site.)

If you want to read more about SSL certificates, head on over to the blog at nhdev.ml/ssl

How to hack a domain, the totally, completely legal way. (Yes, it really is legal. At least, this way.)

"Domain hacking" is a cute little trick used by companies and webmasters to create a brand or a word from a URL. Someone will register a domain because of the characters in the domain rather than the significance of the domain itself.

For example, Instagram uses an Armenia ccTLD to create its https://instagr.am/ domain because the brand "Instagram" ends with "am", the letters for the domain. There are plenty of others, some of which are in the graphics above.

If you want to learn more about domains, including how to choose a domain, head on over to https://nhdev.ml/domains and read my latest blog post. Link can also be found in my bio.

They say "the Web never forgets", but it appears the EU never got the message.

The "right to be forgotten" is a major part of privacy legislation such as GDPR. It's one of my favourite aspects of the regulations if only because it is hugely ironic.

GDPR came into effect on 25th May 2018 and applies to any website that collects data on EU citizens. Since Brexit took effect, the UK government kept GDPR regulations under the new UK GDPR, but it applies to websites that collect data on UK citizens. California has similar legislation, and there are many more.
