‘GGFNBs prove how, when it comes to mutual aid, the phrase “too many chefs spoil the broth” becomes redundant. So long as that broth is made to strengthen bonds in our diverse communities, perhaps kindly seasoned with zaatar, and is shared with whoever, wherever, whenever…’no questions asked’.

Jess and Lucy illustrate the Saturday they spent getting a flavour of the work are doing to highlight how food waste, enforced scarcity and inequality exists in our communities, demonstrating how food serves as both a community unifier and a political statement.

‘The ghost of Roles Yet to Come points toward a tombstone marked with the date of their 40th birthday. ‘Here lies the career of a former star, killed off by menopause’.

‘We, in the cisgender community have demonstrated time and again the psychological importance of your body aligning with your sense of self - so it’s not exactly a stretch to believe that this right should be equally afforded to trans people. ‘

Olivia critiques capitalism’s role in commodifying gender conformity, through exploration of the importance of gender-affirming care and advocation for greater empathy and understanding of the universal need for gender expression.

Words: Frey Black
Artwork: Marnie White (she/her)

‘We don’t wait for our sirloin to be cooked: we take the microwave dinner instead.’

Making a Meal
Words : Ishbel Naraghi-Stewart (she/her)
Artwork: Ella Braidwood (she/her)

‘It’s not simply food on a plate, it’s a meal: a meal created by hands not only my own but my Baba’s, my Mama’s. It’s a way I feel close to my family even though I cannot see them. Iran features on my Glasgow dinner table as it did back home.’

Ishbel writes about the sacred act of preparing and sharing a meal, discussing how through sharing our cultures across the dinner table, we can break down the walls that divide us.

A Little Bit About GUM

GUM has represented engaging and innovative student journalism for over a century. Founded in 1889, we have been awarded ‘Best Magazine’ twice by the Herald Student Media Awards – 2006 and 2008.

We pride ourselves on writing about issues that will engage, entertain and challenge students.

Our articles cover a multitude of topics and styles – personal essays, columns, think pieces, political commentary, pop culture… if you have an idea, we’d love to hear from you! We also make sure to include Glasgow-specific articles, including reviews of venues in Glasgow. The design of GUM has consistently been of the highest quality. We experiment with ideas, and the result is a fresh, interesting read.
