It can be easy to fall into roles in your career.

How can you take more control over your future, whether you like to change sectors or be the big boss?

Sometimes we get pigeonholed because of previous roles or what an organisation needs from you. How can you get clearer on what will benefit or harm your future career, especially when you’re still determining where you want to end up?

Or you may be clear about what you want but need help figuring out how to get there.

In this masterclass session, Alison Phillips will speak to Genelle Aldred about how she got to where she is and what she thinks about when choosing new team members.

🗓 Wednesday, 19th April at 6pm
📍 16 Dufour's Place, London, W1F 7SP

1 WEEK TO GO! Have you signed up to the Wellbeing and Healthy Boundaries Masterclass?

Many of us end up bottling up our frustrations before exploding or burning out; we want to avoid that! In this session, we’ll hear from Natalie Lue, a writer, artist, and author of five books, including The Joy of Saying No (HarperCollins/Harper Horizon), which was published in January 2023. She helps people, pleasers, perfectionists and relationship strugglers reclaim themselves from their emotional baggage to become more of who they really are.

🗓 Wednesday 29th March at 12pm, via Zoom (Members only).

On International Women’s Day (March 8) we revealed the findings of our first Online Harms for Women in Journalism survey, hosted by Women in Journalism and Reach.

Online harm is an interpretive issue and individuals respond differently when faced with online harm depending on a number of factors. However, this report makes it clear that without decisive action to support staff and freelance contributors, some women journalists feel they have minimise their online presence due to hateful and threatening behaviour towards them. It’s even making some want to leave altogether.

“Jineth’s fight saved my life!”

Around the world every day there are journalists putting their lives at risk in order to report the truth. Often their families, too, face physical harm and intimidation. These are the true heroes of our trade. Those for whom speaking truth to power comes with real consequences. Everyone who believes in the importance of journalism owes a debt of gratitude to these reporters, photographers and broadcasters. At Women In Journalism, we tell the stories of female hero journalists working around the globe. We believe their words need to be heard. We believe their voices must never be silenced.

Jineth was one of the first journalists investigating how the armed conflict had moved into the prison system,” Claudia Duque, a Colombian investigative journalist, International Women Media Foundation (IWMF) Courage in Journalism award recipient, and Bedoya’s friend, says. "Jineth uncovered many stories about massacres inside prisons. That made her a target for threats and, later, her attack.”

Are you feeling burned out by end of week? TGIF😅

This is your sign to book your spot in the Healthy Boundaries and Wellbeing Masterclass⏰

"I've often called journalism the career that keeps you chasing! Newsrooms and media organisations are great in many ways and challenging in others. However, they are hierarchical because decisions need to be made timely, so decision-making by committee is only sometimes possible. This means, to get to the top, you feel like you have to work hard to shine. This can often lead to neglecting our well-being and not being able to say no, sometimes when you really should! That's why Nat is perfect for this session. I've followed her work and got to know her a little bit. I know that I was nodding along to her book because, as a journalist saying yes to your superiors is as natural as breathing, so it's good to think about healthy boundaries, so you don't burn out!" - Host, Genelle Aldred, WiJ Deputy Chair.

Becoming a journalist means saying yes to unpredictable and sometimes long hours. Yes, to grafting your way up a ladder and chasing people and stories. Some organisations are more demanding than others, and some managers are more challenging than others. Saying no to a request can be scary, especially if you are early in your career or not very senior.

In this session, Natalie will speak to Genelle about how we can begin to work on helping our wellbeing by having healthy boundaries at work.

If you need help to do this well, this is for you!

A huge congratulations to the winner of the 2022 Woman of the Year Award for Regional Journalism 🏆

Judges were “deeply impressed with how she had inspired & supported more broader & representative reporting at Reach and brought to life the ideas of diversity of inclusion in content.”

“An inspirational and influential leader who is not afraid to challenge her colleagues to think differently, work smarter and be the best they can be. Chairing the ethnicity inclusion network ReachCulture, it is clear she is determined to make a difference and challenge perceptions — as well as still finding the time to support parents with her popular LemonAid newsletter to connect families all over the country each week.”

Lynda said: “As one of very few mixed race or Black female leaders in the industry, the lack of diversity in both our newsrooms and subsequently our content stands out to me every single day. With a very distinct lack of ethnic diversity in journalism to help influence the news agenda, I feel it’s my purpose to be relentless on this issue until we see real change. It’s lovely to be recognised by Women In Journalism for the work I’ve been doing so far and I hope, above all, Black and brown women starting out in this industry are able to see beyond the glass ceiling.”
